What an awesome kayaking adventure cruising from Kelso, Washington on the Coweeman River onto the Cowlitz River then south to the Columbia River and down river a bit around the mills and Port of Longview to cross the currents to make it to the Oregon side and land in Rainier to get some grub at the Ol' Pastime Tavern (Rainier, OR) with Bingo at 6pm you could be there for hours but we caught our shuttle ride back to Kelso to cap off a fun afternoon paddle with Otters, Blue Herrons, Harbor Seals and California Sea Lions at the mouth of the Cowlitz River!!

Work taking place at the Old Olympia Brewery

What's happening at the Brewery? Thanks to grants from the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the Washington State Department of Ecology, work to assess brownfields within the Brewery District and the Capitol Boulevard Corridor may begin as early as spring 2024. The City is currently evaluating qualifications from firms interested in providing professional environmental, engineering, and planning services in support of brownfield assessment and redevelopment.

The selected firm will help the City complete environmental assessments, conduct a range of planning activities, and facilitate community engagement within the Brewery District and Capitol Boulevard Corridor. Once the grants are complete, the City, will have: A clear understanding of contamination on brownfield sites within the Brewery District and Capitol Boulevard Corridor, clean-up plans and cost estimates for brownfield sites, positioned itself for future clean-up and economic development grants, partnered with owners and gathered community input to inform redevelopment planning.

These grants allow the City to begin assessments and remediation plans, which will set the stage for community-driven redevelopment of these sites.
