May 25: Guests onboard Ocean Adventurer enjoyed an incredible ship cruise searching for wildlife in Woodfjorden, Svalbard.

The ethereal light, perfect snowflakes, and stunning rectangular sea ice formations made it a magical experience. This was a perfect opportunity to capture a group photo with all our guests at the bow of the ship! 😊🛳️

We're celebrating Father's Day by highlighting Emperor dads, some of the most devoted fathers in the animal kingdom! 💛

They endure Antarctica's harsh winter, incubating a single egg and caring for the chick until mom returns. With temperatures as low as -40°F and winds up to 90 mph, these dads survive on fat reserves and huddle together to keep warm.

Meanwhile, the moms head to sea after laying the egg, returning after two months to take over chick care. The pair then takes turns feeding and protecting their chick until it's ready to venture out on its own in the summer.

Together, they ensure the next generation thrives! 😍

May 4: Landing at Jan Mayen! 🌋 This remote volcanic island in the Arctic Ocean between Norway and Iceland features the world’s northernmost active volcano, Beerenberg, at 2277m (7470ft).

This 55 km long, 373 sq km island has no permanent population, only a small rotating crew.

🗒️ Rich in marine life and seabirds, Jan Mayen is a protected nature reserve crucial for meteorology, geology, and climate research.

🐦 Guests onboard Ultramarine landed at Kvalrossbukta and saw multiple bird species, including puffins, Little Auks, Brunnich’s Guillemot, Northern Wheatear, and Meadow Pipit. Our Ornithologist, Noah Strycker, also spotted a Ring Ouzel!

🐋 From the water, guests saw many marine species, including fin and minke whales!

May 02: Funningur is a serene village nestled on Eysturoy Island in the west of the Faroe Islands archipelago. Legend has it that this is where the first settlers arrived.

Our visit was nothing short of heartwarming. The locals welcomed us like family, serving delicious fish soup and pancakes. The village exudes authentic farm life, with numerous animals roaming around, many of them adorable babies. We immersed ourselves in the local culture, learning Faroese chain dancing, singing hymns together, and supporting the community by purchasing local crafts and handmade wool products. One of the unique sights was watching the sheep feed on seaweed in the intertidal zone. For the more adventurous, there was an opportunity to climb Slættaratindur, the highest peak in the Faroe Islands. It was an unforgettable experience!Learn more about our Arctic Saga expedition → https://fal.cn/3xK4L📸: Nicky Souness () and Tara Mulvany

“A roundup of my most memorable takeaways from Antarctica 🇦🇶
1. The incredible landscapes—one of the few times where the promo pics actually don't do them justice.

2. Penguin poo - I admit, I'm one of those people where the smell and the...poo-ness caused me A LOT of distress. Will never forget all the poo mountains we climbed haha! 💩

3. Learning about whales from an actual marine biologist who specializes in whales!!

4. The sense of adventure - we were lucky in that a combination of weather conditions and our Expedition Leader meant we got to go quite far south and do some interesting landings. Here, we're crossing the Lemaire at night.

5. Making such amazing new friends! I came as a solo traveller, but I truly never felt that way.” 🤍

Words and photos by Chelsea Du (), a guest onboard our Antarctic Express: Crossing the Circle expedition.

What really struck me during this trip was how dedicated he and the team were to exceeding our expectations. And more importantly, how mindful they were to the local ecology!"—Gajan Balan, guest onboard one of our Svalbard expeditions.

05/24/2024

Chinstrap penguins have distinctive black caps, white faces, and a black band under their chins. They thrive in the northern Antarctic Peninsula and nearby islands, with breeding colonies in the South Orkney, South Shetland, and South Sandwich Islands.

Both males and females are similar in size and appearance. Their diet is mainly krill, with some fish and crustaceans. In winter, they shelter on icebergs and land north of their breeding colonies.

Adults go to sea from late March to October for food, returning in early November. Males build stone nests on steep slopes, and females lay two eggs between late November and early December. Parents take turns incubating the eggs in 5-10 day shifts, reducing to 35 hours before hatching. Chicks hatch in January and stay in the nest until February, then join crèches for warmth and protection while parents hunt. Fledging occurs in early March, about 50-60 days after hatching. Young penguins start foraging at sea and reach maturity at 3-7 years, with a lifespan of 15-20 years.

☀️ Shorter days in February and March result in incredible sunsets
🐧 Young penguins at play make for excellent wildlife photography
🐋 Witness incredible whale sightings on a Zodiac cruise

Greenland will forever change your view of the Arctic! 🇬🇱

For the last 23 years, our team has been on a never-ending quest to discover the most unique guest experiences in Greenland's deep fjords, remote coasts, alpine lakes, snow-capped mountains, and ice-covered landscapes. It’s our pleasure to showcase the best of Greenland and the many different ways you can explore it with Quark Expeditions.

Encounter a mix of Ancient and Contemporary Cultures as you explore Norse and Viking ruins, and experience contemporary Greenland through community visits, cultural festivals, and food.

Equally mesmerizing are the monumental ice forms: the Greenland Ice Sheet—which you can visit by helicopter—towering icebergs and alpine glaciers high up in the mountains.

Expect surreal landscapes beyond anything you ever imagined: 2,000-metre rock faces, a 70-km steep-walled fjord, and geological formations that look like abstract art.

Plus, spell-binding light unseen anywhere else: the multi-colored Northern Lights, icebergs illuminated from within, moonlit ice, and sunrises and sunsets that steal your breath away.

“It’s difficult to condense Antarctica into a few photos. The wildlife, landscapes, experiences like the polar plunge, crossing the Antarctic Circle, and friends I made along the way have made this an unforgettable trip that I feel both grateful for and lucky to have experienced.

This was my first solo trip, and I was anxious and scared, especially as a woman, about being in a place I knew no one and nothing about. All I can say is don’t wait for the ‘right time’ or limit yourself to where you can go because friends can’t go with you. From this experience, I can tell people are generally good, and most are willing to look out for you and extend a helping hand.

And yes, the polar plunge was cold 🥶🇦🇶” —Francesca M., guest onboard our Antarctic Express: Crossing the Circle expedition in March 2024.
