When the Caldor Fire was coming towards the Tahoe Basin the snowmaking team stepped up to help protect Heavenly, led by their Senior Manager of Snow Surfaces, Bryan Hickman, who is also one of our Captains. We’re so proud of him and his team’s hard and persistent work, we raise a glass to you all!
Meet Bryan Hickman, senior manager of snow surfaces at Heavenly.
Snow is the essence of our winter experience at Heavenly. We’re fortunate to have an incredible team of experts here on Heavenly's snowmaking team, led by Bryan. Bryan and his team also happened to play a critical role in helping to protect our resort from the Caldor Fire. This team includes John Tarmey, Ian Clark, Kyle Ferguson, Billy Clark, Joe Flores and Gabe Decker. They are a team of heroes.
When the fire entered the Lake Tahoe Basin, Bryan and the snowmaking team stepped up, positioning snowmaking guns all over the mountain to help protect the resort's boundaries from the fire’s path.
When the evacuation order came, Bryan and his team were required to evacuate as well. They complied, but felt reluctant because they knew there was more they could do. Bryan started to make calls to see how he could get his team back to help. It was all they wanted to do.
Thanks to Bryan’s persistence, and with the support of the National Forest Service and local partners, Bryan was able to get special permission for his team to return to Heavenly and help protect the mountain. Within hours they moved more than 30 snowmaking guns into wooded areas. They set up a pump house running with two compressors, three water pumps, and water suppression for numerous structures and equipment.
Bryan served as the point of contact for the snowmaking team and the boots on the ground for their efforts. He provided clear communication and updates to the Heavenly operations team and worked with various onsite partners. As a result, the team managed to turn on 70 guns total, a huge effort and equal to what the mountain typically uses to prepare for winter.
Today, tomorrow, and this winter as we take our first turns, we share our gratitude with the team that produces snow in the winter and bravely protected our cherished mountain community this summer. We are honored and grateful they are part of the Heavenly family. We thank Bryan for his extraordinary leadership, agility, and innovation. Because of you, we will enjoy many incredible days during the seasons ahead.

Moving the Golden Rose from Bellingham Washington to South Lak...
Diondra and Shane Colquhoun, embarked on a journey in 2016 with an idea that originally started as a wine bar in South Lake Tahoe. Shane was looking for a new boat, a Chris Craft specifically, and happened to find the Golden Rose. He suggested taking the wine bar on the lake so they changed courses and shifted their business to wine cruises on Lake Tahoe and so began Tahoe Tastings.
Tahoe Tastings and the Golden Rose are proud to bring our guests on not only a tour of Lake Tahoe but also a tour through Northern California wineries! On your wine tasting tour from South Lake Tahoe to Emerald Bay, you will taste 8 different wines, beginning with a sparkling wine and including both whites and reds. We rotate our wines throughout the season to offer wines from a variety of regions, including the world-famous Napa Valley wine country as well as wines from Anderson Valley, Calaveras, Placer, Nevada, Amador, El Dorado, Monterrey and Yolo counties as well as the Central Valley. The wines that you will be tasting on your tour have been hand selected by us from our favorite wineries in each region. The wineries chosen are high-end boutique wineries and the chosen wines are exclusive to the winery tasting rooms, with the exception of our cruises! We have bottles available to purchase at the end of your trip to enjoy during your stay in Lake Tahoe or to take home to add to the rest of your collection. All of this will be on a semi-private tour aboard the one-of-a-kind vintage Golden Rose, a 1953 Chris Craft Venetian Water Taxi docked at the Tahoe Keys Marina.
The Golden Rose was built in 1953 as a Chris Craft Double Cabin Fly Bridge Cruiser and was originally named “In the Mood”. In December of 1996, a blizzard hit the Pacific Northwest and pummeled the Puget Sound marinas. The snow collapsed several roofs of the marina boat docks, damaging hundreds of boats, sinking over 300, one of which was In The Mood. She was partially sunk and heavily damaged, she was taken to a boat yard to be scrapped.
Terry Buzzard, the owner of Island Mariner Cruises, the first whale watching tour company in Bellingham, Washington, saw her in the scrapyard and instead of allowing this beautiful Chris Craft to be scrapped, he decided to recreate her as a Venetian Water Taxi. He stripped her down to the hull, sanded, refinished the original mahogany, added Yellow Alaskan Cedar, Ironbark from Australia, Pernambuco wood from Brazil and meticulously rebuilt each part by hand with his friends at Glen Cove Boatworks. The original gas engines were replaced with two Caterpillar 3208 diesel engines. Her large windows have a rose etched in the glass at each corner. All of the original chrome pieces were plated in 24 karat gold, which is where she gets her name, Golden Rose. The boat is such a fine piece of workmanship that Christopher Columbus Smith III (3rd generation Chris Craft), commented after riding in it, that he wished the company had made such a beautiful boat themselves.
The current owners of the Golden Rose, Shane and Diondra Colquhoun, had her shipped from Bellingham, Washington to her new home in South Lake Tahoe, California to use as a commercial tour boat so everyone can experience the beauty and allure of Lake Tahoe from a one-of-a-kind Chris Craft Venetian Water Taxi.
In early 2017, Shane spent over 600 hours sanding, staining and refinishing the hull of the Golden Rose under the guidance of esteemed shipwright, Dave Triano, of Triano Marine Design.
Boat Facts:
Twin 3208 Caterpillar diesel engines
Cruise 6 knots, top speed 12 knots
Icom VHF, Furuno plotter, and radar
Two 220 gallon fuel tanks
Full engine room fire system
Aluminum reinforced stringers/frames
Mahogany, Yellow Alaskan Cedar, Ironbark and Pernambuco woods were used
Deck fittings are 24 karats gold plated
342 sheets of 24 karat gold leaf were used just in the vessel name and design on the stern of the boat
