Maine fishermen and coastal merchants used practical, efficient “sloop boats” in the 19th century. How did Midcoast Mainers develop the Muscongus Bay sloops and Friendship sloops; how did they use them, who still uses them? Join us on Monday, July 12, from 7:00 to 8:00 pm as Cipperly Good, Bobby Ives, and Rich Langton discuss this renowned craft.
Cipperly Good, Curator of Maritime History at the Penobscot Marine Museum, will introduce us to the early 19th century Midcoast fishermen, their ways of fishing and their needs for a better boat. Bristol’s own boatbuilder and sailor, Bobby Ives, will discuss the development of the Muscongus Bay sloop, then the Friendship sloop, and their design and construction differences. Rich Langton, a longtime Midcoast sailor of Friendship sloops and past president of the Friendship Sloop Society, will talk about how these boats sail and the use of them as yachts today.
Please join us for an interesting hour that will include time for questions. To register for this Zoom event, email [email protected]. The library will email you an invitation the day before the presentation.
The library will continue to offer this series of free presentations through August. The August 9th presentation will be given by local author Jodi Paloni and several authors with whom she works.
