Just returned from interpreting with my colleague and friend, Clarissa Laguardia (Laguardia Translations) in Sacramento on the important topic of providing culturally sensitive services to victims of domestic abuse. We may all be aware of this pervasive problem in our own culture, but we know it happens in all cultures, sadly. Not all conferences we interpret for make us think and evaluate our beliefs about our own culture, and others. Hay muchas palabras que en México he

Sabemos que hay muchas palabras que sabemos se siguen usando en su forma castellanizada y que todo hispanoparlante usa. Lo que luego me sorprende a mí es cuando uso palabras que la gente de otros países no entiende, como mecate, chokiaki (no sé realmente comodeba deletrearse), etc. Si mis amigos de otros países leen esto, cuéntenme de alguna palabra que le hayan oído usar a un mexicano, o ejemplos similares con lenguas de tu propio país.

El uso cotidiano de términos prehispánicos en México es mucho más común de lo que imaginamos.

Tuve una vez (antes de la existencia del internet) una colección lingüística de mariposas en muchos idioms. En muchos idiomas suenan bonita la palabra, como borboleta, bu**um, paruparu, ramarama, kupukupu y haihai. Pero en alemán.... jajaja

So true! Imagine a visit to an Urgent Care that ends up being $1038. And of course it consisted of just 5 minutes with the physician (who, by the way, billed me separately, so add an extra $150. Once they submitted it to my insurance, it was dropped to less than $300. Which I still consider outrageous. But at least we can get care when we need it...

What's the weirdest thing you've been called while at work? Here's a few from my experience:
Maria (of course... I'm Hispanic!)
"the Interpretator"
And the always-present: translator. :)
I've also been asked to convert speech into English, making my job sound wonderully magical!
