Discover Yachats

Discover Yachats Welcome to “Discover Yachats”, the Facebook home of the new Official Yachats Visitor Center. All of us who live in Yachats were drawn here for many reasons.

Our goal is to provide our visitors with information about the treasures that make our “Gem of the Oregon Coast” unique. Some of us still don’t know exactly why. Maybe it is the natural beauty of this place, from the Cape Perpetua headland and the Cummings Creek Wilderness Area to our south, the 630,000 acres of the Siuslaw National Forest at our back door, or the Pacific Ocean stretching out from

our front door, with miles of beaches and tidepools to discover. This is a special place. We are all committed to taking care of our home. From the City Councils’ Vision Statement, which leads with “...Our village is a place where natural resources are valued and protected,...”, to the volunteers of the Yachats Trails Committee who spend several weekends a month maintaining our trails system and also a great deal of time removing invasive species, replacing them with Native plants. Throughout our Community there are individuals and groups making contributions, whether it’s those who head for the beach on Monday mornings to pick up any litter left after a busy weekend, or those who have adopted flower beds along Hwy 101 and maintain them. We would like to share our little piece of heaven with you, and invite you to Discover Yachats. No matter what your interests- hiking, bicycling, photography, boogie boarding and surfing, fishing, mushrooming, agate hunting, and so much more is part of Yachats. For more information:

Check out the gorgeous marine layer coming into town! A marine layer is formed over bodies of water, due to the cool water temp being met with the hot summer air, creating water v***r! Hope you're all enjoying the beautiful day 😍 with gratitude,

Have you ever arrived at the beach, only to see and smell a bunch of blue blobs all over?

You've just experienced a blue tide! All of those sapphire blue blobs are actually hydrozoa (jellyfish like, but made up of specialized individual polyps that make up the whole being), called Velella velella or By The Wind Sailors 😍

These beautiful creatures utilize their specialized sail on top of their body to catch wind that will push them around the open sea, the sail is even diagonal at a 45 degree angle, like a sailboat!

They are harmless to human hands, just like their relatives the anemone, utilizing microscopic stinging cells to aquire their prey. The skin on our hands is too thick for the micro harpoons to pe*****te, resulting in a velcro like feel when touched.

Velella velella are found across the planet, washing up on shores occasionally when the wind direction changes, which is why they show up on our coastline sporadically throughout the year.

Have you ever seen a when you traveled here to ? 💙🌊💙

Lay down
Your sweet and weary head
The night is falling
You have come to journey's end
Sleep now
And dream of the ones who came before
They are calling
From across the distant shore

Holy moly, there's a whole lot of beauty to experience when you !😉

While we have our share of stunning sand beaches, the tumultuous and rugged rocky coastline really sets us apart!

Volcanic basalt carved by the waves non stop all day, make for incredible ocean views and formations, like this scene captured by

Two of our most famous wave sculpted locations, are Thors Well, and Devils Churn, which are conveniently next to one another, just a few miles south of town.

Happy exploring out there!💙🌊

While there is no doubt our rugged coastline is a must see, don't miss out on the stunning deep emerald forests 🌲🌲🌲

Endless acres of fern gullies and towering evergreen await you, ready to hold you quietly on a soft bed of moss. Soak up all the intricate sounds, including the hoot of an owl off in the distance.

to find your new favorite place to reset your heart and mind while forest bathing, year round!

If you have ever explored our rocky coastline, you've undoubtedly heard the sweet call of our local Black Oystercatchers!

These shore birds were named Oystercatchers back in 1731 when they were first documented, eating oysters of course!
Black Oystercatchers can live upwards of 15 years, and are monogamous, laying eggs in the same nest every year.

this summer to hear their distinct beautiful call mingling with the crashing waves 😍🌊

Do you like seabirds and care about their welfare? Join a volunteer opportunity to monitor seabird nests at Cape Perpetua. Portland Audubon and partners are monitoring seabird nesting colonies adjacent to Cape Perpetua in order to better understand how seabirds may respond to the new protections.

Have you ever walked these beautiful wooden boardwalks?

, to find a hidden world right in the heart of town- behold our local Wetlands Park!

This quiet and tranquil, easy to walk trail system is accessible via 4th Street, as well as 5th Street down by the electric vehicle charging lot , 6th Street and Ocean View Drive, and on 7th Street by the library.
This special area boasts beautiful wetland habitats, boardwalks, and an array of local flora and fauna to enjoy from the walkways or on one of the many benches.

Shout out to Yachatstrails.org for the lovely map, and of course to Yachats Trail Crew/YIPS for keeping the wetland trail maintained for all of us to enjoy freely!

Good morning, time to greet the dawn!
Once again life begins anew,
A fresh start has unfolded for you,
And further clarified your goals in view!
Remind yourself of the dreams of your heart,
Open the shades and bask in the sun,
Throughout the day I wish you only joy,
And may this morning be full of fun!

Fun fact for your Thursday- Did you know a group of sea stars are called a constellation?😍

during low tide, for a chance to visit some of our marine locals!

Here's a few tips for tidepooling safely-

•Watch where you step! Avoid walking on algae covered rocks, kelp, and of course rocks covered in animals like barnacles and mussels. This also includes allowing dogs to roam freely in sensitive habitats, please keep furry friends leashed.

•Do not pry off animals from rocks, leave all animals where they are, and please don't take anything home with you! Pulling animals like sea stars off rocks, causes them a lot of harm, as you're literally ripping their suctioned tube feet off!

•Be very aware of the tides and sneaker waves, never turn your back on the sea. Sneaker waves still happen even if the tide is out.

•Remember you're a guest in many other animals homes, during an already stressful time for them (low tide), move about slowly and respectfully.

•Bring a bag to pick up trash and leave the beach better than when you found it

and enjoy some peaceful time to yourself. Watch the waves as you sip on a fresh roasted coffee from the warmth of your car, or take your comfort to the next level by scheduling a spa day at one of our local resorts!

A little mid week vitamin sea dose for ya 😍 Thors Well, from above-Whoaaa!

While Thors Well is most active during high tide, that's also easily the most dangerous time to be out on the surrounding sharp lava rock laden environment.

Please always practice extreme caution when visiting the rocky shoreline, never ever turn your back on the ocean, and be very mindful of sneaker waves!
