Our avocados should be ready in a few weeks. We have been watching them grow for months now and I can't wait. The home grown avocados are different from store bought in that they are juicy. And delicious, and you can eat one before it knows it has been picked.

The green beans are growing so well we are eating them 4 times a week and now we are pickling them. Spring! Don't you just love it!

Jasper has been cooking chicken using the lavender we grow. He either puts it in a marinade or stuffs the bird with lavender and other fresh herbs. It's absolutely devine! You can find them at the Fruit Bowl and Plaza Extra along with all of the other organic herbs he grows.

The new market in Red Hook (the old Marina Market location) is fabulous! They carry mostly organic products. The store is beautiful, totally renovated and unrecognizable from the prior market. Our organic live herbs are selling well there.

We went through a nightmare this summer as we were overwhelmed with ants. Thousands and thousands of ants who all thought my hibiscus and rosemary, limes, bananas, etc. were the perfect place to farm aphids. I found an inexpensive solution to the ants. 1 cup of white sugar, 1 cup of water and 1 tablespoon of Borax (laundry booster), boil for a couple of minutes then let it cool. I doubled and tripled the recipe. I took small pieces of cardboard, or plastic lids and placed them everywhere - in my pots, at the base of in ground plants and put a tablespoon of my ant potion on each. On some plants I trickled it down the trunk of the plant so the ants had to walk through it. It worked. In a couple of days the ants were gone. But, they came back in smaller numbers and I redid the procedure. They were gone and again this next time they came back it was much, much smaller amounts. I keep a vigilant watch and when I see ants I give them a dose. Try it for a non toxic, inexpensive way to keep the ants away. Remember, ants are farmers and they will bring insects to your healthy plants and place them there, then call in all their relatives to do the same and before you know it you have a full invasion.

Simple way to kill fire ants? Boil a kettle of water and pour it wherever you see fire ant nests. Gone. No chemicals. It can kill a plant if you pour boiling water on the roots so be careful.
