The directive, issued by Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan P**c Saturday night, comes as Covid-19 infections continue to rise in the country, with most new patients having come in from foreign countries.

For those entering the country for diplomatic purposes or other special matters such as business managers, experts and high-skilled workers, the Ministries of Public Security, National Defense, Foreign Affairs, and Health will decide whether it's necessary to issue visas for them, P**c said.

A policy extension will allow citizens of 46 countries to enter Vietnam for 30 days with e-visa until 2021.

The Vietnamese government has approved a two-year extension of the pilot e-visa issuance program for foreigners visiting the country.

The policy was launched on February 1, 2017, allowing citizens from 40 countries to apply for electronic visas. These countries included major tourism markets of China, Japan, South Korea, the U.S, the U.K, Germany and Sweden.

Last year, visitors from six countries, Australia, India, Canada, the Netherlands, New Zealand and the U.A.E were added to the list.

The e-visa application scheme was scheduled to expire next February, but has been extended now.

As of August 31 this year, more than 241,000 foreign tourists have entered Vietnam with e-visas, according to Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT).

The policy allows foreigners to apply for a 30-day, single-entry e-visa for holidays or business trips by paying a $25 application fee online.

Foreign tourists have hailed as "positive step" Vietnam's tourism minister proposing visa exemption be expanded for major markets like Europe and the U.S.

Nguyen Van Hung, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, had proposed earlier this week that Vietnam expands visa exemption for tourists from Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, Europe, and the U.S. to boost tourism recovery after more than two years of pandemic restrictions.

Michael Burger from the U.S., who visited Vietnam in May, said the proposal was definitely a positive step toward making travel to Vietnam easier.

"As a regular visitor to Vietnam, I feel delighted to hear this news," Burger told VnExpress International.

It would help increase Vietnam's tourism competitiveness among Southeast Asian nations that already exempt American passport holders from having to get a visa for stays of under 30 days.

Indonesia
Indonesia has become the latest country in Southeast Asia to launch its so-called "golden visa" program earlier this month, allowing foreign investors to stay in the country between 5 and 10 years, depending on the value of their investment.

To be eligible for 5-year visa, foreigners need to set up a company worth $2.5 million, while for the 10 years visa, a $5 million investment is required.
