Discover new cultures, meet new people, serve others, explore new places, make a difference and get involved. Our approach is one of co-investment and community involvement, where local communities and local organisations are also encouraged to commit time, energy and basic resources to the projects. Gap Year South Africa Projects are owned by local communities and local organisations and a string

ent operational code of conduct is always adhered too. This encourages a two-way commitment and investment both from the local community and local organisation as well as the volunteer or donor. Our model avoids creating a mindset of dependency but rather builds self sustainability within under-resourced schools and communities. The intended beneficiaries of our projects are young people who have inherently been afforded very little exceptional opportunity. Working with local communities, we aim to empower underprivileged young people with the essential life skills to become future values-based leaders of development in their own communities. Gap Year South Africa Internships offer students an opportunity to learn outside the formality of a classroom by opening them up to real world careers and the challenges they may face on a daily basis. An internship will enhance a students understanding of an industry, broaden their understanding of how business works and better prepare them for further education or employment.

So Wonderful to read of the benefits that a Gap Year can offer.

If there’s anything my gap year has taught me, it’s that being financially responsible while traveling is a must. As an Additional Card Member on ’s account, I’m able to be independent when I’m in school, while still knowing my parents have my back. There are so many cool benefits that come with my Additional Card Membership that I’m just starting to learn.

My name is Tanja Klee and I am 19 years old. I am from New Hanover, KwaZulu -Natal, South Africa. I joined Gap Year South Africa on the 11th of April 2018 and was part of this programme for 12 weeks.

My time with Gap Year South Africa was filled with volunteering in many different areas in the community of Masiphumelele, which is situated in Cape Town. I volunteered at two of the schools Gap Year South Africa works with, Masi Educare and Bhongolethu Primary. I also volunteered at the Horse riding with the disabled children from Sinethemba. These were my main programmes from 9am to 12pm in the mornings, where I committed most of my time to. For my secondary programmes I assisted with the aftercare at Masi Educare and the Communiversity Swim and Surf programme from 2pm to 4pm in the afternoon. I decided to be a part of this programme not only to have something worthwhile and new and fun and exciting to do that would give me the experience I need when working with children, I also decided to be a part of this programme because I have always wanted to help where help is really needed. It has always been in my character, since I can remember to make others happy because that makes me happy. This experience with Gap Year South Africa has given me that in more ways than I could think.

Masi Educare is an educational centre for toddlers and children from the ages of 18 months to 6 years that is based in the heart of Masiphumelele. I myself have been privileged enough to help out here, having assisted in the 18 months to 2 year olds class as well as in the 4 to 5 year olds class twice a week. I helped teach these children new things, I played with them, I helped feed the little ones and put them to bed, I also got a chance to help prepare their food in the kitchen, getting to know the kitchen staff and learn a few tricks here and there on how to prepare certain foods in the best and quickest way. I also got to see what kinds of foods the children eat every day and at first it seems shocking because they mostly eat processed foods such as two minute noodles and they eat that every day. Coming from a more privileged life where I have grown up and been taught to eat healthy and nutritious foods and only have snacks occasionally I was sad to see this and you also might be. You end up asking yourself at first, why are they feeding these children unhealthy foods that don’t have enough nutrients? In time you start to realize that it’s because they don’t have the money to buy healthier foods for all these children because there are just so many of them that need something to eat, they don’t have the time to spend hours cooking and they also don’t have the money to afford cooks that know all about food and nutrition which makes them having to hire more inexperienced cooks that still need to learn all there is to food and nutrition which takes time. This realization makes one sad but also so much more aware of your own food and nutrition intake and it makes you appreciate your life so much more. These different areas I was able to assist in gave me the insight I need when working with children and people and the things I have to do if I become a teacher one day or even just have to take care of my own family. I can only say that it has truly been an eye opening experience filled with much laughter, tears, hard work, learning, growing and building up new relationships with the staff and mostly the children.

One thing that never stops to amaze me is how happy these children were every day, although having come from unstable families and broken homes and hardly any money and food. It always made my day to see these happy children and work with them and teach them new things and to just be a part of their happiness. Yes there were challenging days where I felt like I wasn’t helping and making a difference because I was put into a situation where I didn’t know what to do and that’s because when volunteering in an underprivileged community, you are often put into situations where you are out of your comfort zone but without those challenging days I wouldn’t have grown through this experience. When deciding to do something that you have never done before, you need to expect and prepare for difficult days because this might be all new to you as it was to me.

Once some of those difficult days come, you might feel like you weren’t prepared for this at all and you feel weak and helpless and confused because you thought you prepared for days like these so you’re supposed to be strong and positive about this difficult situation that you are in. Let me tell you from my experience that it is ok to feel like this because we’re human and sometimes we do just fall down and all we can do in those moments is find the strength within ourselves and others to pick ourselves up again and with the loving environment you are in here, the people you work with when volunteering and the people you stay with here, that will be easy. You will always have loving people around here that will support you through anything. You are not alone when doing this programme for the first time, there are so many others, younger, older and your age that are also doing this for the first time so you’re all going through the same experiences and can therefore help each other and that is one of the things I love about this programme.

Masi Educare is such a lovely environment for these children and for volunteers to work, learn and grow in. The children are in a happy and safe place which is the main priority and the staff that teach these children are such strong and Independent women that are giving these children the best possible education and future they can have. I myself having worked with these children and teachers, have not only formed new and strong founded relationships but have been a part of each and every one of their lives and have learned so much from them, mainly the children. What I have mostly learned from them is to be grateful for the life I was given and the lives I can change by being myself and being open to learning from others and taking that and growing into a better person with that.
Working with Masi Educare is only one of the amazing things you can do when volunteering because there are so many different areas you can volunteer in and you will grow through all of them in the same way I did or in different ways and leave with having made such an incredible lasting impact that the children and teachers and people of these communities will never forget.

How did you see the world when you were just a child? Who did you think you were before the world began to make you believe who you should be? What was in your heart when all you did was play? What if you could see yourself today, as you did when you were just a child?

After care on Tuesday and Thursday has us racking our brains for fun and educational activities that we can teach to kids between 4-7 years old. We start with song and dance and almost always end up drawing on something once the craft is complete. It is such fun... come and join us next year and bring some fresh ideas with you.
