The Year is 1942 and the Cape is under enemy attack by lurking German U Boats. A network of Big Guns, Tunnels, Underground Operation Rooms, SSS Radar Stations and Ammunition magazines have been built to defend the Cape.

Allow 1,5 hours for this exclusive private or scheduled Tour that will leave you blasted by the past.

Please bring a small handheld torch and a sense for adventure.

Due to the underground nature this tunnel complex has accessibility limitations making them unsuitable for people with disabilities.

Tunnel exploration is a new urban activity below the City of Cape Town. Parts of the underground Canals and Rivers date back to 1652. They used to supply the passing ships with fresh water. Later these Rivers flowing through the City became pleasant walkways shaded by Oaks with Bridges going over them. As the years passed and the City expanded they were eventually covered up and forgotten. Cape Town was once known as the little Amsterdam in a foreign country.

The tide was super low today showing off the shipwrecks on Milnerton Beach.
About one kilometre north of the lighthouse, where the beach is cleaner and pebbles roll euphoniously in the waves, you will come across the massive boilers of the Hermes in the surf. The NSRI gets calls every year from concerned locals worried that a whale is stranded near the beach; the sea spray sometimes pushes through holes in the top of the wreck creating an illusion of a whale’s blow. The Hermes was a liner, built in 1899, on her way to Cape Town with a large cargo of livestock, forage and a few passengers. When she arrived in May 1901 the harbour was full, and she was forced to drop anchor for the night. A north westerly gale came up, she dragged her anchors, and when the captain ordered her engines started, they failed.

The feeling of claustrophobia: There were absolutely no crawl spaces like the ones I was concerned about, in fact, these tunnels were big, approximately two meters in diameter, so big you can’t touch both sides at the same time. • My fitness levels: The part when you climb down into the tunnel was a bit daunting. It is quite a way down if you were to fall. Fortunately, between a guide at the top and another at the bottom, both of whom definitely remembered their patience pills that day, I was skillfully directed into the tunnel. • The dark: While my headlamp thingy definitely wasn't the brightest, I managed to position myself in the middle of the group so there was always light (from other people’s head torches) behind me and in front of me.
