We caught up with @tiffanywells_za and @marijus3 briefly in Waterval Boven over the autumn and managed to squeeze a session down by the waterfall. It’s a special place with raw energy coupled with exquisite climbing.
As always, not as much time available to really do it all justice, but stoked for the time and memories on offer!

There’s a new lifeguard on duty…
We often have customers ask us why they would buy a Madrock Lifeguard over a Petzl Grigri. The answer is easy.
THE SPECS
🌟Rope diameter - 8.9mm to 11mm (identical to the Grigri 2)
🌟Weight - 154 grams (15 grams lighter than the Grigri 2)
🌟Assisted Breaking
👉FEEDS LIKE AN ATC – Unlike the Grigri, the Lifeguard doesn’t require you to override the device in order to quickly feed out slack. One of it’s niftiest features in that you can feed it out like you would an ATC. However, the lip for your index finger lacks the same depth as the Grigri, so if this is something you’re used to, it takes a little adjusting.
👉SOFTER CATCHES - It feels like the Lifeguard needs a bit more force to engage than the Grigri 2. This makes sense, because this is what allows the Lifeguard to feed out slack like an ATC. This should allow more rope to slip before locking, which provides softer catches than a Grigri 2.
👉SMOOTHER LOWERING – Top rope belaying feels no different from other devices. No learning curve here. The lowering is not that different from the Grigri 2 except, for us, it feels easier to find and maintain that “sweet spot” for the smooth lower.
👉BUDGET FRIENDLY
The Madrock Lifeguard retails for R1475 while the Grigri 2 for R1595.
