GRASSROOTS QUILTERS GUILD is based in Westville, Durban and was started in 1984 with less than 20 members and we now have over 60 members. Our members’ tastes in quilting vary from traditional through to contemporary/art quilts. Our committee consists of a chairlady, secretary, treasurer, tea-coordinator, 3 ladies for the library and one who looks after the gallery andGrassroots Quilt!.jpg show an

We have many well-known members in our guild. These members are known both nationally and internationally, and are teachers and judges. We meet once a month on the 4th Wednesday of the month at our local library. We have an extensive library and members are encouraged to take as many books as they like. At each meeting, 3 ladies are nominated to bring eats and serve tea, which is always a feast. Each month we have theme days, for example, in January, we had a talk about that unique South African fabric called Shwe-Shwe. Each month we have a speaker, who can be a member or someone from outside. In January Lyn Gonzaga showed us pictures from her trip to the World Quilt Show in San Francisco and in February we had Rosalie Dace tell us about her adventures in America where she teaches the art of quilting. Some months, instead of having a speaker, we have a workshop, where we teach a special technique. One of our members, Odette Tolksdorf, who is also a master quilter as well as a teacher and quilt judge, runs a club called ARTROOTS, and every month she and a small group of members go off to an art gallery to see what’s on exhibit. Each month one of our members is nominated to “showcase her work” where she brings some of her quilts and tells us a little about herself, when she started quilting, and in which direction her quilting is going. Every month we have challenges, usually given by the chairlady, and these can be A4 size and we bring them to the meeting the following
month. Many of our members enter quilts into international shows and these go on exhibitions held in South Africa and overseas . This year (2013) is our 30th year of being an active guild and we are going to celebrate by having a luncheon for the members. DATES FOR 2013 MEETINGS;
