Then why not give me a call to share with you the excitement and magic that abounds each and every day out birding in the Kingdom of KZN Kingdom Birding is run and operated by Dave Rimmer - a keen birder, nature enthusiast, photographer, an active citizen scientist and supporter of bird conservation causes. I am not an accredited bird guide but I have birded extensively for more than 10 years, par

ticularly within the greater Durban area and the kingdom of KwaZulu-Natal. During this I have led numerous bird club outings. So, if you’re planning a visit to KZN for work or leisure, or not sure where the best spots and reserves are to find a specific bird or certain species for your life list, and/or worried about birding alone and need company and some security, then why not drop me a line. Let me share with you the excitement and magic that abounds each and every day out bird watching, be it in a coastal forest looking for the Spotted Ground Thrush, watching waders at Bayhead Sanctuary, or sitting in a hide at Sappi Mbozambo wetlands. My mission is to offer you the very best birding experience possible.

I've seen a few over the years, but none have been this confiding. Having found a suitable spot at a safe distance to get pics, this bird got progressively closer and closer to me.

It's not every day one gets to see an in KZN. So, you can imagine my surprise a few weeks back whilst standing in the garden at home, when I noticed landing lights on a distant raptor. Mad dash inside to get the camera, and just had enough time to fire off a few record shots of this juvenile before it moved on. How's that for a garden list bird!

This lady is unlikely to meet her match. Well out of her normal distribution range, and no male in sight, despite having built a nest. This has taken a liking to The Dam Shop, adjacent to the Midmar Dam entrance gate.

I don't recall having ever seen the underside colours of an tail before - normally obscured from view as they skulk in the undergrowth. This one was seen on one of my monthly walks for the residents of Cotswold Downs Estate.

Quite possibly my favourite seabird (until perhaps I cross paths with a Blue Petrel) , this on a recent Durban pelagic trip. I can't wait to get out to sea again at the end of September.

Remiss of me not to have posted my pic of KZNs most recent celebrity visitor. A well out of range that attracted twitchers from all parts of the country. A glorious sighting indeed, until it's untimely demise courtesy of a hungry Lanner Falcon.

A pair of paid little attention to us as they went about their business on the side of the road. I tried to get both in the same frame, but they were too quick for me. KZN Midlands birding, albeit dry, is fantastic at this time of year.

A truly awesome evening of night birding with mates on the south coast looking for Nightjars last week. We located three Swamp Nightjars, and they afforded us superlative views. Chuffed to finally get a photo of this species.

Opportunity knocks.

For a change, a twitch in the W. Cape. I don't do cross-country twitches, but a few were present at Lambert's Bay whilst in the Cape over the Xmas period. Fellow KZN twitcher, was also down there, so we teamed up for a day of birding up the West coast. After a 3 hour (hot, smelly, and noisy) vigil at the Gannet colony on Bird Island, Wally made a welcome return, and posed beautifully for us.

Over and above the great birding to be had in the Karoopoort area, I got to see a number of great mammals. The highlight was seeing my first ever Hewitt's Red Rock Rabbit - a loooooong way off, so he pic is a very tight crop. Also saw Klipspringer, Cape Fox, Steenbok, Scrub Hare, and Angulate Tortoise. Can't count the Cape Hare as it was roadkill!
