Wij willen graag ons stukje Afrika met anderen delen en daarom verhuren wij onze bush villa. Onze 6 persoons villa (3 slaapkamers, 2 badkamers, 2 buitendouches) ligt op Raptors View Wildlife Estate in Hoedspruit, Zuid Afrika. Raptors View is een omheind en beveiligd landgoed van circa 1.000 hectare waar ongeveer 250 woningen staan. Op het estate lopen de dieren vrij rond. Geen gevaarlijke big 5 ma
ar wel giraffes, zebra's, impala's, nyala's, kudu's en vele andere. Je kunt er veilig wandelen, fietsen of hardlopen. Let Villa Sonskyn warm your heart and quiet your thoughts. Warme bush groet,

The Sound of Silence
The silence at Villa Sonskyn was deafening today. We only heard nature. Birds that came to drink, a giraffe that came to meet us and nothing else. No cars, no people talking, really nothing at all. In the Netherlands this silence is unthinkable. That is why I love being at this special place in Hoedspruit.

Een volgende nachtbezoeker was een porcupine (stekelvarken).
De volgende nachtbezoeker was een genet.
Ook 's nachts wordt de drinkplaats bij de villa bezocht. Om te zien wie de bezoekers zijn, hebben we een nachtcamera opgehangen. Zo hebben we hier een aardvark op de film.

Dit is toch wel een van mijn favoriete dieren uit de bush geworden: de Dung Beetle (mestkever). Wat een werk moet het mannetje beetle verrichten om zich voort te mogen planten: eerst een grote mestbal maken waarbij hij de andere mannelijke beetles moet verjagen maar tegelijkertijd de vrouwelijke beetle moet verleiden om voor zijn mestbal te kiezen. Als ze dan voor zijn mestbal heeft gekozen door zich erop vast te klemmen, moet hij die mestbal verplaatsen naar een rustige plek. Hij gaat hierbij op zijn voorpoten staan en duwt vervolgens met zijn achterpoten de bal vooruit. Dat vergt enorm veel kracht en doorzettingsvermogen. Zeker wanneer de weg regelmatig wordt geblokkeerd door takken, graspollen e.d... En dan is er nog die gevaarlijke weg waar auto's over rijden met alle gevolgen van dien. Maar als er een mooie plek gevonden is en het vrouwtje overtuigd is van zijn mannelijkheid (wat een held is het toch), dan mag het grote wonder van de natuur plaatsvinden. Het bevruchtte eitje wordt vervolgens in de mestbal gestopt waardoor baby mestkever voldoende te eten heeft om uit te groeien tot een prachtige Dung Beetle. Is het niet prachtig? Ik hou van dit soort stoere mannen! Ps: ook complimenten aan mevrouw de dung beetle want hoe draaierig moet zij wel niet geworden zijn van die tocht op de mestbal?
Nog een filmpje van de camera trap. Voor giraffes is het gevaarlijk en lastig om te drinken want in deze houding zijn de giraffes het meest kwetsbaar. Kijk maar eens.
We hebben een 'camera trap' geïnstalleerd zodat we ook weten welke dieren in het donker een bezoek brengen aan onze drinkplaats. Nou, dat hebben we geweten met de familie giraf op bezoek 😂. Meer dan 50 filmpjes met giraffes in allerlei standen.
