This weekend had the perfect weather for an adventure to Marble baths at Injisuthi in the central Drakensberg mountains. Certainly a fun place to enjoy swimming while surrounded by incredible mountains.

I just enjoyed another hike up the Amphitheatre. I didn't take many photos this time, so these are all from the adventurous people who joined me. Yes, it does require an effort, but the results are certainly worth it. I find it interesting to see what photos people take and from what perspective. It shows what they find interesting or crazy or exciting. Most of the photos were of the infamous chain ladders. Yes, and everyone made it. Yay. #

A change is as good as a holiday. I do enjoy summer, but I also like winter too. The mountains are totally different from one season to another, and I am actually looking forward to winter. Generally, the days are clearer, although cooler. Summer is lovely and green but then you can get days of mist and rain. Which season do you prefer?

Yup, I am an idiot. I had the wrong dates for Easter. Turns out I had nothing planned for that long weekend. Should probably plan something. So let's hike to Mafadi. I know Everest is on a lot of people's bucket list. It is an incredible achievement to stand on top of the tallest mountain in the world. Aparently, it is also way better known than the 'tiny' Drakensberg. On a good day more people summit Everest than the highest peak in South Africa in a year. I must admit I way prefer the Drakensberg even though I haven't been to Everest. Too many people.

Guys, these are pictures of the overnight hike up the Amphitheatre. An effort is required with around 4 hours of hiking from the car park to our campsite near the Tugela falls. It includes 2 sets of chain ladders, but the views are certainly worth the effort. So if you want to do a great hike, then join me from the 17th to the 18th of February. The Drakensberg Northern Traverse is certainly one of the best hikes in South Africa, if not the world. We camp near the tallest waterfall in the world, next to a huge Cape Vulture Colony, and put up with ridiculous mountain scenery for 6 days. This last one I did in December needed a route change, though. Summer in the Drakensberg is the rainy season, which makes stunning flowers, but the rivers can become tricky to cross. We were camping on top of the Mlambonja pass, and it rained for 10 hours. That made the pass dangerous to hike down. No worries because the easier Ntonjelana pass was nearby. Happy days 🤪.

Please enjoy some more pictures of my last hike from the Amphitheatre to Mnweni. Summer in the Drakensberg is stunning but be prepared for rain. We didn't get a drop on us while we were hiking but it rained most nights. There are no rainbows without rain 🤪.

People, I would like to invite you on a really beautiful 3 day hike at Mnweni in the northern Drakensberg mountains. We are doing this hike from the 26th to the 28th January. People often ask me what the age limit is for my overnight hikes, and I am never sure what to say. Well, I just did a 5 day hike from the Amphitheatre along the top of the escarpment with a young girl of 9 years old. Her 2 brothers and sister joined her with her energetic parents. So now I can say that if you love nature and camping and have a supportive family you can enjoy a multi day hike at only 9 years old. I don't want to go on too long but can say I have faith in the future of the human race.

I must say hiking in the Drakensberg in summer is crazy. Unbelievably green with flowers and water everywhere. Springs coming straight out of the ground, misty days, ridiculous thunderstorms, and dramatic views of high cliffs. I have lots of photos to show you . Just 10 at a time.

We did an overnight hike to Marble baths at Injisuthi in the central Drakensberg. After camping at the start, we headed out into the mountains. Day 1 was fairly cloudy but actually great weather to hike in. It took us 4 hrs to arrive at the baths, so we had the whole afternoon to enjoy swimming and appreciating nature. The report did say rain today, and it was correct. It's not too bad, though. We arrived at our cars at 10am so plenty time to drive back to the big city.

Do you know the 3rd highest peak in South Africa? Anyway it is Champagne castle and is 3377m above sea level. May only be 3rd but has better views than the 2 higher peaks. Unbelievable views in the Drakensberg mountains of South Africa. I have been to this spot more than 3 times. In fact, it is probably more than 50 times. Yup, I am quite old now. But I never get tired of these incredible mountains. If you haven't hiked in the Drakensberg, then it is about time you did.

The overnight hike to camp on top of the Amphitheatre must be one of the best hikes you can do in South Africa. An effort is needed, but the best views come after the hardest climbs. Hiking is like life. The more you put into it, the more results you get.

On my recent tour of KwaZulu-Natal we visited Giants castle reserve. A great thing to do there is check out the amazing Bushman museum. It is about a 45 minute walk to the caves where a guide shows you around. The cottages are lovely and although you can self cater we enjoyed dinner in the restaurant.

I just got back from an enjoyable slack packing glamping tour of the Drakensberg. We had 4 nights in lodges, which was rather nice. Sleeping in a soft bed instead of a tent and doing day walks certainly was a change for me. First up was staying at Sungubala with a day hike up the Tugela gorge.

People always think a great tent or warm sleeping bag or nice food are important on a hike which they are but seem to forget about boots. They say...they are getting old but can squeeze out one more hike in these boots. The Drakensberg is rough with few paths so a good pair of boots is very important.
