From the pen of Monkey Explore:
So, we did a thing last year in July 2022. We bought a 2006 Jeep Wrangler 4.0l 6 cyl, TJ, Automatic. When we received the Jeep the 4x4 was kicking out when you engaged it. We contacted the dealership and they got repaired. 4x4 engaged perfectly after that.
So, to tell you more about the Jeep. When we bought it, it had +- 52,000km on the clock with the following which was extra on it.
• Replacement bumpers back and front
• Warn Winch
• Spotlights
• Towbar
• 2” Body Lift
• 2” Suspension Lift
• 33” Mickey Thompson Tyres
• Safari Snorkel
• Leather Seats
• Original Radio/CD player
We took it out for a 4x4 fun day and oh man, what a disaster and disappointment, when driving off-road it feels if your back break in 20 places. Once you get out of the Jeep you can not walk normal. (maybe it was just me). From a bystander point of view, it seems that the Jeep go flawless through obstacles, but it is another story inside the Jeep.
As always links to some videos of how the Jeep did on a off-road course at De Wildt 4x4 will be posted at the end of this blog.
Then there was the first time since I had the Jeep that it needed to be serviced. To my surprise the amount was over R6,000.00. What was replaced in the service:
• Spark Plugs (6 off them)
• Air Filter
• Pollen Filter
• Oil
• Oil Filter
In contrast with the Ranger this is double the price to get the Jeep Serviced.
After the service we noticed the following:
• An Annoying sound when the Jeep idle (like a cherrie cherrie sound) A pulley was replaced but the sound still stays there. (learned to live with it)
• When you turn left you hear a cluck cluck sound, and no it is not a CV. As per the mechanic it is the bushes on the steering that needs to be replaced. Costs to get it fixed is a whopping R45,000.00 to R50,000.00 as the steering needed to be taken out and the bushes needed to be pressed out and pressed in again. (learned to live with it)
• Another thrilling thing that started now. When you pull away it feels that the Jeep gearbox started to search and when you are driving on the highway and the gears change you can hear the revs drop more than it is supposed to. (learned to live with it)
• The Heater stopped working in wintertime, so it was all fun and games when you go to working in the early hours of the morning in winter. Thick jackets, gloves and and and just to keep warm.
• The aircon stopped making cold, this happened on a day which we had a heat wave.
With the Jeep’s hard top if it is cold, it is extra cold, when it is warm it is extra warm as the Jeep’s hard top is not the same than a normal car, bakkie or suv.
Enough of that, let’s talk about the fuel consumption:
• Fuel tank capacity – 72l
• Kilometres on a tank – 300km
• Kilometres per liter – 3km/l
As the Jeep is my daily driver fuel costs a month is between R10,000 to R14,000 a month. I am driving a lot as in my profession I need to attend meetings all over Gauteng and Mpumalanga. So, when the fuel price goes up than our monthly account raises and when the fuel costs go down then it makes a difference in our account.
If we knew what we know today, then we would have passed on the Jeep and bought something that make more economic and financial sense. But yes, we made the mistake and now we need to live with it.
If you decide to trade in your Jeep on something else, then you must take what they offer you. The depreciation on value of the Jeep is of such value that you need to load your next vehicles finance in such a way that you will pay more in monthly instalments that is not even funny.
If we want to trade in our Jeep, we need to pay +- R40,000.00 into the Jeep’s account just to get your affordability in line for the next vehicle. The best offer we got on the Jeep for trade in was R90,000.00 and then they needed to load the next vehicle with a huge amount. It does not matter what accessories you have on the Jeep, it does not matter, what matter to some dealers is the trade and retail. But when they resell the vehicle, they advertise all the accessories on the Jeep and sell it for more than you got for it.
Moral of the story, if you want to own a Jeep, ensure you have a wealthy bank account as it will take more off your money than anything else.
P.S: This is our experience of our TJ Jeep and we do not say it is all the Jeeps.
Till next time.............
