LTD 2022. Day 9.
Outeniqua is known to mean "they who bear honey". There is a wide diversity of plants and wildlife in the area, and the weather is very changeable. Snow can be expected on the peaks during the winter months. The vegetation has recovered well from the fires of 2018 and only the ghostly silhouettes of the occasional burnt tree trunk appear through the mist.
Unfortunately the 4 Passes view point was clouded in when we rode past. Well worth a stop, from here you can see the Outeniqua Pass, Montagu Pass, the Cradock Pass and the Railway line. The descent into George and the coastal plain is always spectacular.
LTD 2022. Day 9.
Today was our time to ride Route 62 to Sedgefield, so after leaving Suurbraak it was back up Tradouw Pass to Barrydale. There we turned east along Route 62 and looked forward to a number of passes we would be traversing during the morning.
The first was the Huis River Pass, this name coming from the Khoihoi word for "willow", and lies between the old missionary stations of Zoar and Amaliënstein to the west and Calitzdorp to the east. Beautiful sweeping bends and amazing peaks reaching to 655 m above mean sea level.
On our free day in Suurbrak we decided to visit L'Agulhas and visit friends. Cape Agulhas is the most southern coastal village in South Africa and is reputed to be one of the richest fishing areas in the Southern Hemisphere.
Just south of the lighthouse is where the Indian and Atlantic Oceans meet. The Cape Agulhas Lighthouse is the second-oldest working lighthouse in South Africa and was lit on March 1, 1849.
LTD 2022. Day 7. Our third pass for the day is the Tradouw Pass, connecting Barrydale with Swellendam. This is the Women's Pass in the old Khoi language and is 16km long, passing through the Langeberg Mountains. Constructed by Thomas Bain as well, it was opened in 1873, and follows the Buffelsjag River through the Tradouw Kloof. A longish clip but the scenery is brilliant.
LTD 2022. Day 7. This is the second of three passes we are riding on our seventh day. The Rooihoogte (and Burgers ) Pass down into the Koo Valley and the town of Montagu, home to an annual Harley-Davidson rally. This pass was also constructed by the ever efficient Thomas Bain and leads us through the Langeberg Mountains.
Living The Dream 2022. Day 7. Early morning into Matjiesfontein, Western Cape Province, after some nice twisties in the Verlatenkloof Pass. Originally only a small railway depot and adjacent farm, Matjiesfontein was named after the textile sedge which the Khoekhoen used to make mats (matjies) utilised in the construction of their huts. The Lord Milner Hotel opened in 1883 and one of the first international cricket matches between SA and England was played here in 1895.
LTD 2022. Day 6. Pass #2 for the day. Michell's Pass was constructed in 1848 and joins the town of Ceres to Tulbagh, Worcester and the Breede River Valley. It passes through the Winterhoek mountains, climbing from 620 feet at the start up to 1610 feet at the summit and then descending into Ceres. In days gone by we used to stop at the old Toll House for "roosterkoek" (grill cakes) and a traditional filling.
LTD 2022. Day 6. The Nuwekloof Pass connects the towns of Tulbagh and Wellington in the Western Cape. The original pass was built in 1890 and has a railway running parallel to it. The old Pass Road can still be seen. The road surface is well maintained and a pleasure to ride on a motor bike, although gusting wind conditions may be encountered. This is 1 of 3 passes we will be riding through today, en route to Sutherland.
LTD 2022. Day 6. After two restful days in Lamberts Bay it was an early start south towards Sutherland, via Elands Bay. Elands Bay is about 220 km north of Cape Town and is well known for its surfing and caves which have a number of rock paintings. Verlorevlei is on the left.
LTD 2022. Day 4. Approach into Lamberts Bay. This small fishing villager is about 280 km north of Cape Town, on the west coast and is proclaimed the Diamond of the West Coast due to its white beaches and lobster. Unfortunately we missed out on the lobster that evening - the restaurant had sold out!
LTD 2022. Day 4. Some gentle early morning twisties going up Aninaus Pass. Then it's onto the N7 southbound.
LTD 2022. Day 4. Early morning sunrise out of Port Nolloth. 560 km's to our next stop, Lamberts Bay. The sun was pretty hectic while riding towards the east.
LTD 2022. Day 3. Although a designated rest day, we decide to take a short ride up to Alexander Bay. The desert scenery was amazing, the road was in great condition, and traffic almost non-existent. A compulsory stop was made at the border post, after which we found the only coffee shop in Alex Bay.
LTD 2022. Day 2. Arriving in Port Nolloth after a long but pleasant day's riding.
This was the port from where Jan Smuts, Boer War general and South African Statesman, sailed to Cape Town and then traveled on to Pretoria by armoured train for the signing of the peace agreement ending the Second Anglo-Boer War in 1902.
LTD 2022. Day 2. Westbound towards Springbok. The landscape has become more harsh, but still very beautiful. The lands had plenty of water in them and we soon found out why!
LTD 2022. Day 2. After leaving Upington we head out towards Pofadder and Springbok. The plains become more and more barren with few cars and people to be seen. The national road is in impeccable condition. Just the way we like things!
LTD 2022. Day 2. Early morning departure out of Olifantshoek. 680 km of great roads lie ahead today, through the Northern Cape Province. We will be passing through Upington, Pofadder and Springbok, before making our way north and west to Port Nolloth.
