Spring has sprung.
Over the past few weeks, we have been observing black harrier (Circus maurus) activity on site. Along with and , we have located an active nest site, and another pair has already fledged at least one chick.
With an estimated 1,300 individuals left in the wild, they are one of the most scarce raptors in southern Africa. Black Harriers predominately breed in the Fynbos Biome of South Africa and have a strong preference for Renosterveld vegetation, a severely threatened ecosystem.
It’s illegal to disturb nesting raptors, but this nest was located (and a photo quickly snapped) as part of our ongoing research project with , conducted under provincial permits and licenses.

After the wild weather we've endured since Friday, this morning greeted us with a beautiful break in the clouds. Seizing the opportunity, we headed to the remarkable Klipgat Caves at De Kelders, just a short 20-minute drive away.
This site is not only a stunning natural wonder but also an archaeological gem of global significance. The Klipgat Caves bear witness to early human history, having been inhabited during the Middle and Later Stone Ages around 80,000 to 50,000 years ago, and again from 2000 to 1200 years ago.
Among the incredible discoveries made here are some of the earliest human remains of Homo sapiens, ancient stone tools, animal remains, and even pottery from more recent periods. Each artifact uncovers a piece of our shared past, making this site a treasure trove of human history.
If you find yourself in the area, the Klipgat Caves are a must-visit. Their breathtaking beauty and profound historical significance make for an unforgettable experience.
