We have been to quite a few vineyards over the years, but hardly did we ever come across a small scale winemaker like James who managed to bring so much passion and taste to the table 🍷🍶

From growing and production to fermentation and ageing. Never have we been so educated 📚

We particularly enjoyed the 2018 Shiraz and 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon. Nevermind the excellent olives from their Orchard.

The African Buffalo is a beast of an animal. As part of the Big 5, these mammals are incredibly strong and massive in size. They can weigh anything between 300 and 850kg and are incredibly large. Whatsoever they only stand between 130-150cm due to their short legs. According to estimates a Buffalo is up to 4 times stronger than an Ox. This explains why they have been seen lifting entire Safari vehicles if angered 🐃

Baby elephants are called calves. These little giants weigh about 115 kg at birth and stand about 1m tall. Calves eyesight at birth is not very good, so they recognize their mothers rather through touch, sound, and scent. These babies stay very close to their mommy for the first couple of months.

Do you sometimes feel like screaming and shouting too?

Well here is what zebras do: Like horses and donkeys, many kinds of the wild horses still found in nature, make a braying sound, or a whinny. Each zebra's bray may have a different tone; some are high, others are low, and some are soft. Others can come out very loud (just like the sounds you make when you hit your little toe on the heavy table you thought looked so nice for your sitting room 🫢). When they bray, zebras commonly call to their mates in the wild. Whatsoever the sound is also used to express anger or impatience - just like us humans 🙂

About looking.

There is something ephemeral about looking into a chimpanzees eyes. Such a close relative and yet so distant.

In Uganda the conflict between chimpanzee and human has been increasing over the last years. Reason for this is human encroachment into chimp territory. This means that sometimes these animals attack humans because they feel threatened and indeed they are. Humans in turn then get traumatised and afraid which makes them despise their close relatives.

It is hence important to sensitise people through education and decrease the conflict through management of human and chimpanzee behaviour. Tourism plays a major role in reaching these goals.

Cheetahs don’t roar like lions and other cats belonging to the species of Pantherinae. These roaring cats have strong muscles and vocal folds in their larynxes, allowing them to roar.

The Felinae species, to which Cheetahs belong, actually purr like house-cats because their larynxes are not as developed as the ones of the Pantherinae cats.

Cheetahs do whatsoever produce many other sounds including growls and chirps (between mother and cubs) as well as an explosive yelp that travels for up to 2 km.

Today - June 16 - in South Africa 🇿🇦 we celebrate Youth Day to commemorate the achievements of the youth in freeing The country from the evils of Apartheid.

June 16 1976 was the day of the Soweto Uprising. On this day, Hector Pieterson was assassinated by police after attending a peaceful protest against the forceful implementation of Afrikaans as a mandatory language in Bantu education, which would have left millions of learners unable to get a decent education due to them not speaking Afrikaans. The photo of 12 year old Hector being carried by another youth after being shot caused an outcry around the world which would ultimately spark continued civil upheaval that would finally lead to the end of the tyranny of Apartheid in South Africa in 1994.

Our 5-Day-Hike through the Groot Winterhoek was marvellous.

The hike to die Hel is best done in 2 days with a stop-over at the huts (e.g. Klipspringer Hut which is the nicest one of the batch).

The cave at die Hel shows a magnificent display of Bushmen rock art and the rockpool is the biggest in the Western Cape and crowns the hike with a nice refreshment.

We decided to sleep outdoors and in the cave which is also an incredible experience. This is another experience in itself.

If you are keen to learn more about hikes in the Western Cape and are looking for hiking groups to join, we are well connected and would love to share this wonderful experience with you 🇿🇦❤️

Traveling to Eastern Cape? Here’s a Covid-19 update to help you prepare 😁

Seaside views, Tsitsikamma 🌳 the Big Five 🐘 or the slopes of the Drakensberg, whatever made you say “I’m heading to the East this weekend” take these easy steps to stay safe 👉

-Clean your hands often. Use soap and water, or an alcohol-based hand rub.

-Wear a mask when physical distancing isn’t possible.

-Maintain a safe distance from anyone who is coughing or sneezing.

-Don’t touch your eyes, nose, or mouth.

-Stay home if you feel unwell.

-Cover your nose and mouth with your elbow or a tissue when you cough or sneeze.

-If you have a fever, cough, and experience difficulty breathing, seek medical attention.

Apart from all the nature surrounding you, there is plenty to entertain you in Port Elizabeth and East London if you’re looking for a city scene, so we understand why this province is ideal for family holidays, road trips with friends, and even team building quests.

👫👭🏾👫🏽👬🏼👭👭🏼

Locals are genuinely welcoming and friendly. ☝️ Please respect the curfew, (wherever you are in the country) which is now from midnight to 04:00. Eastern Cape’s welcoming nature is matched by a climate that boasts more sunshine than any other coastal town in the country.

Winter in South Africa (SA) begins in June and ends in August 🥶

SA has 4 seasons a year and at times all 4 in one day due to how fast the weather can change, 😅 we find this quite humorous.

1. Sutherland-
When most people visit Sutherland, it’s either for the stars or the snow, but there is much more to this charming town. From old buildings with stories to tell, a planetarium guided by locals, 4×4 trails, and other outdoor activities like hiking and horse riding among wildlife. Situated in the Karoo, Sutherland is a quiet and peaceful town, great for romantic and family trips.

2. Durban-
Durban is a great place for an escape from the cold in those winter days, especially when you’re missing the beach and sun ☀️ Apart from the Durban July excitement, you can enjoy a lot of outdoor activities such as safaris, bike riding, the big swing, and uShaka.

3.Mbombela (Nelspruit)-
It is one of the major South African tourist destinations due to its proximity to the world-famous Kruger National Park. Other attractions in the area are the Sudwala Caves and the Panorama Route with God's Window or the Bourke's Luck Potholes.

Here's our blog for more information: https://afrikalovers.com/south-africa-top-3-destinations-to-visit-during-winter/

You can also send us a message if you have any questions 😃👍 let's plan your next trip.

Happy Freedom Day South Africa! 🇿🇦

What does Freedom Day mean to SA?

Freedom Day honours the anniversary of South Africa's first post-apartheid election that took place on the 27th of April 1994. From this day, everyone of voting age from any race group, including foreign citizens with permanent residency in South Africa were allowed to vote.

The coronavirus pandemic hit Zimbabwe in March 2020 but you can still visit 🛩

While the country still lacks enough vaccines for its 15 million people, authorities are maintaining several COVID-19 restrictions, ☝️for example, their nationwide curfew from 10 pm to 5:30 am is still in effect and Bars, gyms, and clubs remain closed, while restaurants can offer takeaway services 🛵

There are currently 38,045 Coronavirus cases, 1,556 deaths, and 35,094 recoveries in Zimbabwe.

Happy Earth Day 🌍

What are you doing to contribute to this year's Earth day theme, Restore Our Planet?

Today is about raising awareness to the impacts of climate change. To discuss other solutions that can make the Earth more resilient as it heals, like Greta Thunberg who skipped school and inspired an international movement to fight climate change.

You also have a responsibility to educate people about the benefits of being friendly to the environment in their daily lives, and to make positive and sustainable changes to protect our planet.

"Greta has become a leading voice, inspiring millions to join protests around the world" 👏 so should you.

Plant a tree and make a difference today 😁👍 and if you dont have the space? We're sure there's a place you can volunteer to in your area.
