Skal International Hobart wishes to acknowledge the passing of former long-time member Margret Anutha.

Margret passed away peacefully last week (23/7/24) at the age of 81. Since retiring and selling her business Margret remained connected with Skal as a Friend of Skal and despite some health challenges attended our Christmas luncheon a couple of years ago at Frogmore Creek.

Her many tourism friends and Skalleagues extend sincere condolences to her daughter Karen Rees and family on their sad loss of a wonderful lady who can truly be described as pioneer of our tourism industry.

Margret originated from Germany and came to Tasmania in 1996. In the same year she wanted to share her love for her adopted home Tasmania and started her personalised tour business – Natürlich Tasmanien Reisen (Naturally Tasmania Tours). This tour company was an early entrant into the realm of nature and language-based tour operations in Tasmania. As her business grew Margret was joined by her daughter Karen in expanding the business to cater for the broader inbound market before selling the business in 2007 when it became Premier Travel Tasmania.

Typically forthright in her dealings with operators and international partners Margret was passionately determined to promote her adopted home of Tasmania and was always resolute in her creation and promotion of Tasmanian tours with premium nature based experiences.

Margret’s funeral service will be held at 11:30am Thursday 1st August 2024 at the Baha'I Centre

Ross has been a member of 5 clubs around Australia and President of 3. What an exceptional commitment to Skal and the tourism industry ⭐ Ross is always a colourful personality in the room and up for a great chat. Celebrating the bountiful harvest of the Coal River Valley this will be the inaugural CRAVE Harvest Festival

The event is organised by the Coal River Valley Tasmania Tourism Association, a dedicated group of volunteers who are passionate about the produce and people of the valley.

Please send them a Facebook message if you're keen to volunteer. I'll be helping out on Saturday.

Skåleagues Geoff Young and Tony Fox entertained us on Wednesday with Alfred Merse and Ross Smith as back up dancers.

Congratulations to our 2021 Skalleague of the Year, Dave Flower. Dave has been at the forefront of content production for our tourism industry as co-owner and producer with Hype tv, and has worked alongside many fellow Skalleagues to showcase our great island state. Dave and his team are also responsible for producing the Tasmanian Tourism Awards among other major awards ceremonies. Dave has been a true champion throughout these challenging times, always there to lend a hand, and was recently presented with a life membership in recognition of outstanding service to Variety the Children's Charity TAS. Thanks to Dave's team @ Hype tv for helping us put this video presentation together (without Dave's knowledge - which was a huge feat in itself!)

Dear Skalleagues, I’m reaching out to appeal to your generous nature as members of the hospitality, travel and tourism industry. As you may have read in the news yesterday Foodbank have received a Federal funding cut. This decision was reversed and funding has been restored this morning however only 2% of this funding flows to Tasmania. The following Tasmanian statistics are startling: Last year Foodbank in TASMANIA alone provided more than 2.5 million meals out of their warehouses. They also run a free breakfast program at 109 schools. Ed Gauden of Foodbank Tasmania said that the warehouses are the emptiest he has seen. This is dreadful news particularly as we approach the lead up to Christmas.
