Happy When I'm Hiking© is a club that offers varying levels of hiking experiences for all fitness levels. Each one could require different skills or abilities with the ultimate goal of having a fun and enjoyable experience. We see this meetup as an opportunity to welcome all walkers and hikers that share a love of the great outdoors. We consider hiking a great way to combine exercise and meet like

-minded people who like a bit of a challenge. The volunteer event hosts exercise utmost duty of care and responsibility towards all hikers. How strenuous and how much you are willing to push yourself on a hike is different for everyone and one of the main reasons we try to mix up the hikes offered. As for the pace, the general rule of thumb is 4-5 kilometers an hour (slower on rough territory). While we may sometimes push the group to pick up the pace, we do like to take in the surroundings as well as enjoy the company of the great people who love a challenge! Recently, we've added "Mindful Hiking" and "Shinrin Yoku" to the groups activities. If you like our approach to hiking, then please join us in the adventure!

You don't need all the fancy gear. Just get outside and go for a walk. Remember, the smallest step in the right direction can be the biggest step of your life. Tiptoe if you must, but take a step! 👣

One of our favorite hikes!

The Whipstick Loop in Blackwood is now open! 🙌

Following damage in the June 2021 storm, this popular walking track in the Wombat State Forest was closed for public safety while we assessed and repaired it.

The walk is now open for visitors, with a brand-new bridge installed at the start of the loop (pictured).

Before reopening, we undertook cultural heritage assessments, as there is evidence Woi-wurrung speaking peoples used this historic area in the past.

Sun's out....thinking of hitting the trails? Here are some hiking safety tips:

1. Plan ahead: Check the weather, trail conditions, and difficulty level before heading out.
2. Bring essentials: Pack plenty of water, snacks, a first aid kit, and a map or GPS device.
3. Let someone know: Inform a friend or family member of your itinerary and expected return time.
4. Stay on track: Follow marked trails and avoid taking unnecessary risks or shortcuts.
5. Be prepared for emergencies: Know basic first aid and carry a personal locator beacon (PLB) or satellite phone if necessary.
6. Respect the environment: Follow park rules, take your rubbish with you, and avoid damaging vegetation.
7. Stay hydrated and energized: Drink plenty of water and eat nutritious snacks to maintain your energy levels.
8. Be mindful of wildlife: Keep a safe distance from animals, and never feed or approach them.
9. Use sun protection: Wear sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses to protect yourself from the sun.
10. Know your limits: Don't push yourself too hard – turn back if you're feeling exhausted or unsure.

Remember to enjoy your hike and take in the beautiful scenery!

✨To celebrate the 90th anniversary of Bushwalking Victoria, over 30 bushwalking clubs across the state are inviting new walkers to join them in over 50 exciting walks 👣.

Ranging from easy (Grade 2) to difficult (Grade 5), these walks offer a fantastic opportunity for both novice and experienced walkers to explore new trails with the support of a club.

School’s out and the mountains are calling! 🏔️

Our Alpine crews regularly respond to motor vehicle incidents in snow areas which can be avoided by taking some simple safety steps:

❄️Get snow-ready wheels. Ensure your chains are fitted correctly and your vehicle is road-trip ready.

❄️Drive like a pro. Use low revs and gears and brake gently, especially around those icy corners.

❄️Cruise control? Snow Way! Keep those hands on the wheel and ditch the cruise control – mountains and cruise control don’t mix!

❄️Check the VicTraffic website for ice ice baby warnings before you leave.

❄️Always let someone know where you’re going. Safety is snow joke!

❄️Allow plenty of time for your trip. No need to rush when there’s snow much fun ahead!

❄️Rug up. Dress like a snow pro - it’s cold out there!

❄️Make sure you have the Emergency+ App so we can find you in an emergency.

If buses are more your style, hop on board! They’ll whisk you from town to the snowy wonderland base.

PARK CLOSURES DUE TO CATASTROPHIC AND EXTREME FIRE DANGER RATING

All parks in the Wimmera Fire Weather District will be closed for public safety, including:
❌Black Range State
❌Dergholm State Park
❌Grampians (Gariwerd) National Park
❌Little Desert National Park
❌Mt Arapiles-Tooan State Park

Many parks in Central, Mallee, North Central, Northern Country, and South West Fire Weather Districts will also be closed. These include:
❌Ben Major Flora Reserve
❌Dandenong Ranges gardens (ALL)
❌Dandenong Ranges National Park (including 1000 Steps)
❌Langi Ghiran State
❌Organ Pipes National Park
❌Plenty Gorge Park (Yellow Gum Recreation Area)
❌Warrandyte State Park (Pound Bend, Jumping Creek Reserve, Koornong Reserve, Normans Reserve)
❌Woodlands Historic Park
❌Many other parks are still closed due to active bushfires (Mount Buangor State Park) and major storm damage (Lysterfield Park and areas in Gippsland).
