Reports of a possible link between chronic disease risk factors and consumption cows milk related to different protein variants are well documented. Casein accounts for around 80% of total milk protein. Bovine milk beta-casein is present as one of two major genetic variants: A1 or A2 beta-casein. Studies have shown consumption of A1 beta-casein containing milk has the potential to stimulate symptoms of digestive discomfort in susceptible individuals. Now a group of researchers from Curtin University coordinated by Associate Professor Sebely Pal are comparing the effects of A1 and A2 beta-casein consumption on chronic disease risk factors in Australian adults. If their theory is correct, consumption of A2 beta-casein milk will lead to improvements in lipid and diabetes risk factors, and consumers will have another dairy option. Thus, there may be public health benefits associated with this relatively inexpensive nutrition intervention.
This 14 week study requires overweight participants aged between 18 and 70 years. Volunteers will be eligible if they have no milk allergy, are not pregnant or lactating, had no cardiovascular events in the last 6 months, do not take opiods, have not received antibiotic treatment in the last 2 months and have not taken immunosuppressive medications or anti-inflammatory drugs in the last 4 weeks. Participants will be required to consume 3 serves of milk a day. To apply to be part of this study, please visit (http://bit.ly/2CNC6Uk) and answer the questions so we can assess your suitability.
