Today we celebrate what it takes to achieve, to create, to imagine, and to get the job done.

I was fascinated with watching this artisan create with silver and stone. His hands show the scars of his education in perfecting his trade. He uses simple tools to handcraft exquisite works of art.

This was photographed in Egypt, where many tasks are done without modern equipment. A visit to Egypt is a trip through time, whether 6000 years ago to meet ancient Pharaohs, 1000 years ago to meet the great-grandchildren of artists, or 15 minutes ago, when you bit into the warm bread just pulled from the oven, made with the flour the baker ground from wheat an hour ago.

Thanks for sharing my photography journey. I love opening the world to you. If you like my style, follow me!

As a photographer, I share the world with you. Sometimes the world isn’t a pretty place, and the pictures are grim. Mix a long drought, overpopulation of people and wildlife and no relief in sight, then a hard and heartbreaking choice must be made. 😢

CNN’s Larry Madowo explains why Namibia plans to kill more than 700 wild animals and distribute the meat to the people struggling with food insecurity as the country grapples with its worst drought in 100 years.

Wild dogs, aka African Painted Wolves, aka Painted Dogs aka Cape Hunting Dog... however you refer to them, these uniquely colored canines are in the Canidae family, but are the only members of their genus, Lycaon. They are distinguished from the genus Canis by their lack of dewclaws and their hypercarnivorous diet, meaning that their diet consists of over 70% meat.

They are endangered due to human conflict, including disease and habitat destruction. They require an enormous territory over which to range and hunt.

Like wolves, they work together as a pack to take down large prey. An alpha male and female lead the pack and breed puppies, which the entire pack raises. Packs can be as small as two animals and as large as 20 or more, but as a pack increases in size, it can decrease in its ability to feed all of its members, so there are often break-aways that form their own packs.

Seeing these guys hunt and play is the highlight of a safari, and one of my favorite experiences especially when there are puppies. Feel free to share, and Follow me for more outstanding photography.

Slinky Sunday...be careful where you step, or you could meet a Mozambique Spitting Cobra in a dramatic fashion.

Mozambique Spitting Cobras have the ability to send a stream of venom accurately into someone's eyes when they feel the need to defend themselves. This causes severe pain and blindness, which deters predators and humans.

Their bite can be deadly, as they inject cytotoxins and neurotoxins, which can cause paralysis and immediate damage to tissue, making it easy for them to capture their prey. They don't want to eat humans, just small prey like birds, rodents, and other reptiles, but will bite humans if they feel trapped. A bite can be managed with immediate care and antivenin, which most hospitals have available where there are venomous snakes.

This MSC was living in a hollow in a tree at a picnic site. I spotted and photographed it before anyone else noticed and became excited. A picnic site is a great place for any snake to live, because there are lots of rodents and birds around, hoping for handouts.

Needless to say, I used a big zoom lens and was out of striking and spitting distance from this gorgeous specimen. Prevention is always better than cures. I take safety seriously--I don't want to harm wildlife, ever, and I don't want to be harmed. Thus, co-existing peacefully is the goal. This MSC was safely relocated by Kruger Park Rangers to a much more remote location, and the hole was closed off to deter new occupants.

Here's a peek at a thief! A female Diederik Cuckoo invaded the nest of these Red-Headed Weavers. Can you see her wingtip and tail hanging out of the bottom of the nest?

Her goal? Kill the Weaver chicks and lay her own eggs, forcing the Weavers to raise her chicks. The male Weavers banded together, trying to attack and drag her from the nest before she could lay her own eggs.

Brood parasites manipulate a host species into raising its young. It's smart, actually--you perpetuate your own species and do none of the hard work.

They were able, this time, to evict the Cuckoo before she did damage. Next time? We can watch together if you are on safari with me. Feel free to share, and please follow me for more great photos.

It's almost that time...the Elk Rut in Rocky Mountain National Park!

This beast of a bull was warning younger, smaller bulls to stay away from his harem of wives. I love the reds and yellows of the grass as the nights cool down in preparation for winter.

Do you have plans to go to RMNP to enjoy the excitement of the rut this year? I'll be there in just a few weeks after another trip across the pond. I can't wait. Feel free to share, and please follow me for more great photos.

You don't have to be a photographer, but if you want some coaching and instruction, you'll get plenty of time with me to learn how I take award-winning photos. Cabins start at $8730 with the 10% discount you'll receive ONLY by booking with my small group--DM for details about my exclusive discount.

You can see the trip and the remaining spots at https://oceanwide-expeditions.com/antarctica/cruises/otl23-24-weddell-sea-in-search-of-the-emperor-penguin-incl-helicopters

What else will we see? BIRDS--lots of them, including albatross. Whales! Sea Lions! Seals! Glaciers! BLUE ICEBERGS! Other penguins! Plus, we will try to land on the Antarctic Peninsula so that you can stand on the continent.

Sara Jenner is the professional Expedition Leader for Oceanwide. She's letting me share her marvelous photos of these cuties...Thank you Sara! Yes, I will be leading this trip in 2025, plus other Antarctic exploration trips.

Feel free to share, and please follow me for more great photos.

Gorillas!!! Can you get enough of these incredible giant apes??? This photo is of a juvenile Mountain Gorilla. I've taken dozens of people to see them in Uganda, and it's an amazing trip, BUUUT......

What if I told you that you can travel with me from 1 - 9 May 2025 to see Lowland Gorillas? I have a chance to take a small group with me to Congo to see the Crown Jewel of apes, the critically endangered Western Lowland Gorilla, as we open conservation tourism in the SAFE, peaceful Republic of the Congo--NOT the war-torn Democratic Republic of Congo. (They are two different countries.)

This trip will cruise up the Congo River in classic pirogue fishing canoes to visit Congolese villages and people who have rarely seen tourists. You might be the first foreigner they've ever seen! We will walk in the rainforest with families of Western Lowland Gorillas. We will meet Queen Teke, Queen of the Congo. How would you like to cook typical Congolese cuisine with the village locals and witness the traditional Kebekebe dance? Don't know what that is? Neither does most of the rest of the world! Don't wait until the TikTokers find this place!

Interested? DM or email me to save your spot! Follow me for more exciting photos and journeys.

The waters of the longest river in the world, the Nile River, have sustained life for thousands and thousands of years. The river is the backbone of Egyptian life. Their calendar year began with the first month of annual flooding. It has been a link to the Gods. It provides fertile soil for farming and irrigation for the crops. The Prophet Moses floated in its waters in a basket to escape death, being rescued and adopted by a Pharaoh's daughter.

Here a man cools his face after cutting reeds on a hot day, a simple gesture, just a slice of his life living on the Nile in Egypt. This is a facet of photography that I love, a candid moment in someone's day, a peek into their culture and way of life.

Would you like to go to Egypt? I'm organizing an early 2025 small-group trip that includes a journey down the Nile, the Pyramids, King Tut and his treasures, the Temples, and the history of this fascinating country. DM or email me for more information.

If you can, come with me to Snow Hill Island in Antarctica from 20 - 30 November. Why? We are going to see Emperor Penguins--the ones in March of the Penguins!

It takes a special ship and helicopters to get on the Island to see the chicks before they head to sea, and there's a very small window of time to see them. This trip is discounted lower than I've ever seen, and if you want to come with me and be coached in photography, DM me and I'll offer an extra 10% off of the website price. There are only a few cabins left, so tag a friend, share the post, pack up, and let's go.

Here's the website, but you MUST book through me to receive the extra discount and photography coaching from me. DM before your room is gone:

I got so lucky yesterday. Not only did I miss being drenched, I found one of the Red Tail Hawk fledglings flying from tree to tree. They aren't hard to find, actually, because they shriek at the top of their lungs all day, hoping their parents will bring food...but Mom & Dad are long gone, on vacation, and the kids can't live in the basement any longer.

It's OK, because both have caught a few mice. It's been fun to watch them try to fly, clutching their prize in a death grip, and forgetting that they need to use that foot to land. Imagine a young bird, hanging upside down in a tree by one foot, the other full of mouse, flapping and trying to figure out what to do next, totally mortified that someone is watching, laughing, and pointing (that would be me).

Yesterday, though, this one finished a mouse and landed on the top of a limb that had been lopped off. The sun peeked out just before going behind the mountains and lit up the rain. I was able to position so that I got this lovely young raptor backed by the resulting rainbow. Right place, right time, and ready to shoot. It's why I love wildlife photography, and love sharing my passion with others.

Be sure to Follow me for more photos like this, and feel free to share or tag a friend who might like this shot.

I really like the look of high-key images. The clean background makes the subject pop.

This is a Nkorho, or red-billed hornbill...you might know it as Zazu! It's bringing a centipede to the nest.

Did you know that female hornbills nest in tree cavities, where they pluck almost all of their feathers to build the nest? The male muds them in, leaving only a small hole in the adobe through which to feed them. The babies are able to fledge just about the same time mom’s feathers have grown back.

are growing up quickly in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado! Mountain Goats are often close to the roads. They like the salt and minerals brought in on tires, and you'll often find them licking your bumpers. It's a little weird at first, but you get used to it.

Getting them to pose on a ridge with a spectacular background isn't easy. Mom wanted to stick with the "just out of bed" hair, and the kid was constantly distracted by everything else going on around us.

I hope you got out and enjoyed the last few days of July. August is here, so you've got a month of real summer left, and then fall before we know it.

Oh, you think your dog can fetch? Fetch this! 🤪

I loved capturing this photo. When she grabbed the root and turned it sideways, all I could think of was a giant gray St. Bernard with a bone.

Did you notice that one tusk is short and rounded? She probably broke that tusk years ago, and has used it enough to blunt the sharp edges. Tusks are actually teeth, so it probably hurt at the time, poor girl!

It's Monday...want to hide in a cave and eat bugs with me?

This is a Common Toad I found in Norway while on a hike with a close friend. Cute little , isn't he? She? Not sure...but it definitely has an adorable little house!

This is why I stop for the little things when leading a photo safari. 😊

One of my favorite websites is Astronomy.com. I'm fascinated by the skies. I've flown through them for more than half my life as a pilot. I love clear nights and stars and and the Milky Way and the thoughts of other galaxies. A big, dramatic storm is a thrill for me. Watching the moon in all of her phases is a treat, especially when she is full.

When the moon passes in front of the sun, it's a solar eclipse, and we are going to see one in August 2027--want to go to Egypt with me to photograph it? Stay tuned!

We have 5 more full moons to enjoy this year:

Monday, Aug. 19 — 2:26 p.m. — Sturgeon Moon
Tuesday, Sept. 17 — 10:34 p.m. — Corn Moon
Thursday, Oct. 17 — 7:26 a.m. — Hunter’s Moon
Friday, Nov. 15 — 4:28 p.m. — Beaver Moon
Sunday, Dec. 15 — 4:02 a.m. — Cold Moon

I do have a question: We've named the moons of other planets. Why hasn't we named our own?

It's the last Saturday of July...can you believe it?

As the sun sets on this month, on what can you reflect? Is 2024 going the way you wanted? Can you change anything to make it better?

I'm stoked for the rest of the year! Some exciting big new projects are unfolding. I'll be starting my photo safari season in December and you can join me, just stay in touch for announcements.

One trip will be to Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park in South Africa for a well deserved camping trip, where this photo was taken. A single Springbok on a ridge at dawn. What a way to start the day!

My church home hosted refugees from , a group of about 20 young men who traveled for a better life here. This was one of the oldest, and the youngest was 12. These guys were terrific athletic and acrobatic dancers. They shared this part of their culture with us during a street party to welcome them.

It's a big world and I hope you can explore it. I love taking photography groups to immerse in cultures other than our own. Speaking with local people, eating local food, seeing local daily life gives us a momentary glimpse that expands our own little world.

Beautiful, isn't it? This is an Avocet, a wading bird that is fairly common this time of year in North America.

We usually see them in pairs, sifting the bottom of the shallows for worms, snails, crustaceans...whatever seems yummy at the moment.

is a favorite pastime of mine. I don't keep a . I know how driven I can be in wanting to accomplish, so I avoid tempting myself with collecting sightings. I like to enjoy the moment, I like to enjoy what brings to me, without dashing around trying to spot something. Watching is the journey, isn't it?

There's nothing like watching whales during an . Humpbacks migrate down south to feed on normally abundant krill. Seabirds dance above them, scooping up the snacks.

Krill are little reddish shrimp-looking crustaceans. They can bioluminese at times. Their numbers determine the health of the , from the birds to the mammals to everything that lives in the ocean; they are considered a key species.

We've decided that krill oil is good for humans...well, WE haven't, big business has and they are making a LOT of money on it. Did you know that krill begin to decay immediately upon death and release fluorine, which is highly toxic and corrosive? By the time it's harvested, processed at sea, shipped to the destination, and turned into cosmetics or ingestible krill oil that's supposed to be "good for you," fluorine levels are very high. They didn't tell you that, did they?

Why don't we let krill be used by the species that naturally devour it, and get back to products that aren't toxic? Whether or not you can come with me on a November, December, or January to , how you spend your dollars says something to the industries that are trying to pry them from your wallet.

Do you like orchids? I absolutely love them. Seeing one in the wild, in full bloom in its natural habitat, is amazing. This is a Leopard Orchid in South Africa, rooted in the crook of a dead tree next to a dam, where it gets the humidity it needs to survive.

These are poached quite a bit, but this one is very protected by the Rangers in the reserve.

We see lots of leopards in this same reserve. Maybe you should come with me on safari, and I'll show both to you! It's not just about the predators, it's about the entire ecosystem and how it all fits, isn't it?
