Knowing that we could lose the ice that makes Antarctica so special is one reason I go again and again. It’s also why I use photography to increase awareness of our beautiful planet and the beings that inhabit it. Join me on a photography workshop expedition to Antarctica to see it yourself, before it’s gone. I’m now booking for November and December 2025. DM for details.

Scientists using ice-breaking ships and underwater robots have found the Thwaites Glacier in Antarctica is melting at an accelerating rate and could be on an irreversible path to collapse, spelling catastrophe for global sea level rise.

What kind of snake is it? Is it venomous? How can I tell?

This one is easy. It’s a garter snake. The bright red black-tipped tongue is instant ID. It eats lots of mice and keeps its ecosystem in balance, as do all snakes. Please let them live, and they will leave you alone and with fewer pests.

I just had the most enjoyable few moments with a garter snake. It was very calm and as curious about me as I was about her. In fact, I had to nudge her off the road. She reluctantly slithered away.

How can I tell it’s a garter snake? Her bright red black-tipped tongue gives it away instantly.

Flamingos are such beautiful . Their vivid pink grabs attention. I wondered how they would look as a black and white photo, where a viewer could focus on the shapes and textures of these elegant creatures.

If you can make a trip to Antarctica on short notice, have I got a deal for you! There's a HUGE discount on the trip to see Emperor Penguins from 20 - 30 November, and I can offer an extra 10% off if you want to come with me on my photography workshop to this magical place. There are only a few spots left on this trip including shared cabins, so DM me if you think you can go.

If you want to go next year, I'll be leading 3 trips at the end of the year.

I love Antarctica. I really LOVE it. From the blue ice, to the magnificent landscape, to the remoteness and quietness, to the incredible amount of wildlife that you can see nowhere else in the world outside of a zoo...it's magical.

This fur seal was being hunted by a leopard seal, but had found a safe place to wait. Leopard seals can't hunt on land. It would pop up out of the water to try to intimidate the fur seal into jumping back in. We decided to leave as soon as we realized what was going on. We did not want to be the cause of any additional pressure on the fur seal in this life-and-death game. That's what ethical wildlife photography is all about--reading the situation and adapting, putting the animals first no matter how badly you want the shot. Although it looks like I was close, I was using a 500mm lens on a crop sensor camera, so I was quite far away. If you like my photography and my ethics as a photographer, be sure to follow me for more.

The sunflower fields are beginning to fade in their glory as we head towards shorter and cooler days. Dramatic skies and a single looming specimen begged to be captured as a photo.

Did you know that sunflowers follow the sun with their faces?

Get outside and enjoy these last warm weeks, watch for leaves turning red and gold as the last flowers bloom all around you.

I'm heading to Antarctica from 20-30 November to lead a photography group in search of Emperor Penguins--in fact, it's the colony that starred in the movie March of the Penguins! How would you like to join me?

There are a few spots left in shared cabins. I'm offering an extra 10% off the already deeply discounted berths. DM me for details!

If you can't go on such short notice, I will be leading several trips to Antarctica in late 2025, including a short trip to the continent and back, a long trip that includes the continent, South Georgia and Falklands, and another Emperor Penguin trip. I hope you'll plan to join me.

This photo isn't an Emperor, it's an Adele Penguin. I hope you love the adorable cuteness as much as I do. Follow me for more great photography!

Charles Darwin was fascinated with the adaptations of similar species he observed on individual islands while in Galapagos. That became the grounds for his thoughts on the Theory of Evolution. People often think he spent months there, observing nature. Did you know that he was actually only given a few hours by the ship's captain, who did not have time for something as foolish as watching birds and lizards?

One adaptation is the claws on an iguanas feet. This is the front foot. You can see that this one has been digging, and from the deep orange, tell that it is breeding season. Deep vivid color attracts the girls, you know! The textured scales protect the iguana from rough rock and cactus spines. You can instantly tell that this is not a marine iguana, which is specially adapted to live in the sea--these hands aren't made for swimming.

If you ever have the chance to do something foolish like go to Galapagos to watch birds and lizards, take it! Try to spend more than a few hours, though. You won't be sorry!😁

July, August and September are the times to go to Tanzania and Masai Mara to see the Great Migration. Did you know there's a second Great Migration in February and March, when the wildebeest follow the rains back to green grass, where they give birth?

The predators follow and feast at this time. It's hard to watch, but it is the cycle of nature. Without the predators, there would be too many wildebeest and zebra. I'm planning a trip to Tanzania early in the year. If you want to join me, DM me! I'll answer as quickly as I can, please give me a little grace as I will be traveling, but I'd love to get this trip fully planned soon.

Today we celebrate what it takes to achieve, to create, to imagine, and to get the job done.

I was fascinated with watching this artisan create with silver and stone. His hands show the scars of his education in perfecting his trade. He uses simple tools to handcraft exquisite works of art.

This was photographed in Egypt, where many tasks are done without modern equipment. A visit to Egypt is a trip through time, whether 6000 years ago to meet ancient Pharaohs, 1000 years ago to meet the great-grandchildren of artists, or 15 minutes ago, when you bit into the warm bread just pulled from the oven, made with the flour the baker ground from wheat an hour ago.

Thanks for sharing my photography journey. I love opening the world to you. If you like my style, follow me!

As a photographer, I share the world with you. Sometimes the world isn’t a pretty place, and the pictures are grim. Mix a long drought, overpopulation of people and wildlife and no relief in sight, then a hard and heartbreaking choice must be made. 😢

CNN’s Larry Madowo explains why Namibia plans to kill more than 700 wild animals and distribute the meat to the people struggling with food insecurity as the country grapples with its worst drought in 100 years.

Wild dogs, aka African Painted Wolves, aka Painted Dogs aka Cape Hunting Dog... however you refer to them, these uniquely colored canines are in the Canidae family, but are the only members of their genus, Lycaon. They are distinguished from the genus Canis by their lack of dewclaws and their hypercarnivorous diet, meaning that their diet consists of over 70% meat.

They are endangered due to human conflict, including disease and habitat destruction. They require an enormous territory over which to range and hunt.

Like wolves, they work together as a pack to take down large prey. An alpha male and female lead the pack and breed puppies, which the entire pack raises. Packs can be as small as two animals and as large as 20 or more, but as a pack increases in size, it can decrease in its ability to feed all of its members, so there are often break-aways that form their own packs.

Seeing these guys hunt and play is the highlight of a safari, and one of my favorite experiences especially when there are puppies. Feel free to share, and Follow me for more outstanding photography.

Slinky Sunday...be careful where you step, or you could meet a Mozambique Spitting Cobra in a dramatic fashion.

Mozambique Spitting Cobras have the ability to send a stream of venom accurately into someone's eyes when they feel the need to defend themselves. This causes severe pain and blindness, which deters predators and humans.

Their bite can be deadly, as they inject cytotoxins and neurotoxins, which can cause paralysis and immediate damage to tissue, making it easy for them to capture their prey. They don't want to eat humans, just small prey like birds, rodents, and other reptiles, but will bite humans if they feel trapped. A bite can be managed with immediate care and antivenin, which most hospitals have available where there are venomous snakes.

This MSC was living in a hollow in a tree at a picnic site. I spotted and photographed it before anyone else noticed and became excited. A picnic site is a great place for any snake to live, because there are lots of rodents and birds around, hoping for handouts.

Needless to say, I used a big zoom lens and was out of striking and spitting distance from this gorgeous specimen. Prevention is always better than cures. I take safety seriously--I don't want to harm wildlife, ever, and I don't want to be harmed. Thus, co-existing peacefully is the goal. This MSC was safely relocated by Kruger Park Rangers to a much more remote location, and the hole was closed off to deter new occupants.

Feel free to share, and please follow me for more great photos.

Here's a peek at a thief! A female Diederik Cuckoo invaded the nest of these Red-Headed Weavers. Can you see her wingtip and tail hanging out of the bottom of the nest?

Her goal? Kill the Weaver chicks and lay her own eggs, forcing the Weavers to raise her chicks. The male Weavers banded together, trying to attack and drag her from the nest before she could lay her own eggs.

Brood parasites manipulate a host species into raising its young. It's smart, actually--you perpetuate your own species and do none of the hard work.

They were able, this time, to evict the Cuckoo before she did damage. Next time? We can watch together if you are on safari with me. Feel free to share, and please follow me for more great photos.

It's almost that time...the Elk Rut in Rocky Mountain National Park!

This beast of a bull was warning younger, smaller bulls to stay away from his harem of wives. I love the reds and yellows of the grass as the nights cool down in preparation for winter.

Do you have plans to go to RMNP to enjoy the excitement of the rut this year? I'll be there in just a few weeks after another trip across the pond. I can't wait. Feel free to share, and please follow me for more great photos.

If you can join me from 20 - 30 November (yes, just under 3 months away), I have just a few spots left in this small group photo trip. You don't have to be a photographer, but if you want some coaching and instruction, you'll get plenty of time with me to learn how I take award-winning photos. Cabins start at $8730 with the 10% discount you'll receive ONLY by booking with my small group--DM for details about my exclusive discount.

You can see the trip and the remaining spots at https://oceanwide-expeditions.com/antarctica/cruises/otl23-24-weddell-sea-in-search-of-the-emperor-penguin-incl-helicopters

Sara Jenner is the professional Expedition Leader for Oceanwide. She's letting me share her marvelous photos of these cuties...Thank you Sara! Yes, I will be leading this trip in 2025, plus other Antarctic exploration trips.

Feel free to share, and please follow me for more great photos.

Gorillas!!! Can you get enough of these incredible giant apes??? This photo is of a juvenile Mountain Gorilla. I've taken dozens of people to see them in Uganda, and it's an amazing trip, BUUUT......

What if I told you that you can travel with me from 1 - 9 May 2025 to see Lowland Gorillas? I have a chance to take a small group with me to Congo to see the Crown Jewel of apes, the critically endangered Western Lowland Gorilla, as we open conservation tourism in the SAFE, peaceful Republic of the Congo--NOT the war-torn Democratic Republic of Congo. (They are two different countries.)

This trip will cruise up the Congo River in classic pirogue fishing canoes to visit Congolese villages and people who have rarely seen tourists. You might be the first foreigner they've ever seen! We will walk in the rainforest with families of Western Lowland Gorillas. We will meet Queen Teke, Queen of the Congo. How would you like to cook typical Congolese cuisine with the village locals and witness the traditional Kebekebe dance? Don't know what that is? Neither does most of the rest of the world! Don't wait until the TikTokers find this place!

Interested? DM or email me to save your spot! Follow me for more exciting photos and journeys.

The waters of the longest river in the world, the Nile River, have sustained life for thousands and thousands of years. The river is the backbone of Egyptian life. Their calendar year began with the first month of annual flooding. It has been a link to the Gods. It provides fertile soil for farming and irrigation for the crops. The Prophet Moses floated in its waters in a basket to escape death, being rescued and adopted by a Pharaoh's daughter.

Here a man cools his face after cutting reeds on a hot day, a simple gesture, just a slice of his life living on the Nile in Egypt. This is a facet of photography that I love, a candid moment in someone's day, a peek into their culture and way of life.

Would you like to go to Egypt? I'm organizing an early 2025 small-group trip that includes a journey down the Nile, the Pyramids, King Tut and his treasures, the Temples, and the history of this fascinating country. DM or email me for more information.

If you can, come with me to Snow Hill Island in Antarctica from 20 - 30 November. Why? We are going to see Emperor Penguins--the ones in March of the Penguins!

It takes a special ship and helicopters to get on the Island to see the chicks before they head to sea, and there's a very small window of time to see them. This trip is discounted lower than I've ever seen, and if you want to come with me and be coached in photography, DM me and I'll offer an extra 10% off of the website price. There are only a few cabins left, so tag a friend, share the post, pack up, and let's go.

Here's the website, but you MUST book through me to receive the extra discount and photography coaching from me. DM before your room is gone:

I got so lucky yesterday. Not only did I miss being drenched, I found one of the Red Tail Hawk fledglings flying from tree to tree. They aren't hard to find, actually, because they shriek at the top of their lungs all day, hoping their parents will bring food...but Mom & Dad are long gone, on vacation, and the kids can't live in the basement any longer.

It's OK, because both have caught a few mice. It's been fun to watch them try to fly, clutching their prize in a death grip, and forgetting that they need to use that foot to land. Imagine a young bird, hanging upside down in a tree by one foot, the other full of mouse, flapping and trying to figure out what to do next, totally mortified that someone is watching, laughing, and pointing (that would be me).

Yesterday, though, this one finished a mouse and landed on the top of a limb that had been lopped off. The sun peeked out just before going behind the mountains and lit up the rain. I was able to position so that I got this lovely young raptor backed by the resulting rainbow. Right place, right time, and ready to shoot. It's why I love wildlife photography, and love sharing my passion with others.

Be sure to Follow me for more photos like this, and feel free to share or tag a friend who might like this shot.
