Royal Wedding Anniversary

For the people of Bhutan, our King and Queen are the embodiment of dignity, grace and compassion. His Majesty has been at the forefront throughout our battle with the COVID-19 pandemic, tirelessly walking the ground looking after the people and protecting the lives of the Bhutanese. Particularly as Bhutan reopened to tourism after two and half years with renewed commitment to conservation, sustainable initiatives and excellent world class services, His Majesty’s guidance and steadfast work has been our source of assurance, inspiration and comfort. In the ongoing national transformation initiatives, we see a bright future for Bhutan.

On the Royal Wedding Anniversary, we humbly renew our dedication towards building the great and prosperous nation envisioned by Their Majesties. We wish Their Majesties greater peace, happiness, and prosperity, and pray that we are forever blessed by Their Majesties’ love and guidance.

The world’s toughest ultra-marathon, the Snowman Race begins today! The initiative is born from the vision of His Majesty The King to encourage awareness about climate change and spur climate action. Bhutan is a mountainous country, home to many glacial lakes which makes it highly susceptible to the adverse impacts of climate change. Every year, the country is exposed to natural calamities like landslides, unusual and unpredictable weather changes and a rapidly changing ecosystem.

The snowman race aims to highlight the alarmingly real effects of global warming, particularly on the planet’s fragile ecosystems, such as those of the highlands of Bhutan. The route will take the runners from Gasa Dzong to Kurjey Lhakhang in Bumthang. Pristine forests, vast mountain terrain and awe-inspiring vistas make for a track which is as breathtakingly beautiful as it is gruelling. The Snowman race has been dubbed the world’s toughest race for climate action, the ultimate challenge for the participating elite athletes.

The race features 29 international and Bhutanese runners who will run 222 kilometres (138 miles) over five days and multiple peaks summiting 5,470m (17,946 ft) at an oxygen-draining average of 4,267m (14,000 ft). This heralds a new era of sustainable tourism for Bhutan.
