A trip to Bhutan is like travelling back in time. Since opening their doors to tourists in 1974, the formerly isolated country has had a clear strategy about how to manage tourism and preserve the traditional culture that makes it so unique. You might expect to bump into hoards of tourists, but you won’t: the $250 daily travellers fee keeps tourism low volume and therefore low impact feeding back into the country’s wider philosophy of Gross National Happiness. Its largely Buddhist population are a peace-loving and god-fearing people and its landscape – subtropical plains in the south to sub-alpine Himalayan heights in the north – is a sacred land shrouded in ancient mystery.
Thought to be impersonal, there are no traffic lights in Bhutan and the locals wear their distinctive national dress with pride. It has neither military, nor economic power, but it does have culture and scenery in abundance; attributes that keep it distinct and safe.
Bhutan travel advice? Leave your modern life behind and you will have an experience that’s becoming harder to find anywhere else in the world.

One of the most distinctive features of the Bhutanese is their traditional dress.

One of the most distinctive features of the Bhutanese is their traditional dress, unique garments that have evolved over thousands of years. Men wear the Gho, a knee-length robe somewhat resembling a kimono that is tied at the waist by a traditional belt known as Kera. The pouch t which forms at the front traditionally was used for carrying food bowls and a small dagger. Today however it is more accustomed to carrying small articles such as wallets, mobile phones and Doma (beetle nut).

Women wear the Kira, a long, ankle-length dress accompanied by a light outer jacket known as a Tego with an inner layer known as a Wonju.
However, tribal and semi-nomadic people like the Bramis and Brokpas of eastern Bhutan generally wear clothing that differs from the rest of the Bhutanese population. The Brokpas and the Bramis both wear dresses woven either out of Yak or Sheep hair.

Bhutanese still wear long scarves when visiting Dzongs and other administrative centers. The scarves worn vary in color, signifying the wearer’s status or rank. The scarf worn by men is known as Kabney while those worn by women are known as Rachus. Below is a brief breakdown of the different kabneys and their associated rank.

The Rachu is hung over a woman’s shoulder and unlike the scarves worn by men, does not have any specific rank associated with its color. Rachus are usually woven out of raw silk and embroidered with beautiful rich patterns.

King of Bhutan hailed as “People’s King”
***************************************************************
Upon the coronation of the current Druk Gyalpo — Dragon King — of Bhutan in 2008, His Majesty King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck announced to his subjects that he would “not rule over them as a king”. Instead, he promised that he would protect them as a father, care for them as a brother, and serve them as a son. He would give them everything and keep nothing.

We all Bhutanese feel blessed to have such rulers.

Bhutan has so much of such stories to share, come visit Bhutan and experience the Bhutanese Hospitality.

09/05/2017

Gee's golden langur (Trachypithecus geei), or simply the golden langur, is an Old World monkey found in the foothills of the Black Mountains of Bhutan and in a small region of western Assam, India and. The Golden Langur is an endangered species of primate endemic to Bhutan and areas of Assam immediately bordering Bhutan. Estimates show about 4000 individuals in the wild in Bhutan and about 1000 in Assam. With the langur populations in Assam severely affected by deforestation and loss of habitat, Bhutan is the last bastion for their survival as a species.

Did you know that in Bhutanese consider it a good omen to see langurs along the way. Not only that villagers in Bhutan say that langurs chased monkeys from coming to their fields if they found around their fields in the past.

Bhutan has some amazing facts, come experience such during your next visit to Bhutan. Plan a holiday to Bhutan with Bhutan Travel Express.

The Picture of our Prime Minister in Sakteng is one adorable one. Here wishing you all happy sunday.

Merak-Sakteng stands out as a distinct attraction in Bhutan. Unlike anywhere else in the country, it offers a visitor to experience a unique semi-nomadic lifestyle, culture and vernacular in one of the most scenic pastoral valleys in the protected area of Sakteng Wildlife Sanctuary (SWS) in Trashigang Dzongkhag (District), in Eastern Bhutan.

It is a moderate trek (between 1,500m and 4,100m) traversing through the semi-nomadic villages of Gengu (3400m), Merak (3500m), Sakteng (2800m), Thakthi (2200m), and Joenkhar (1700m). Tour operators are not mandated to use a particular trail but the most common trail usually begins from Chaling and ends in Phongmey. Both these Geogs of Merak and Sakteng are an important watershed for Ngere Ama chu and Gamri chu rivers respectively.

The campsites have been designed aesthetically to blend with local architecture and ambiance. Enclosed by a stonewall (with a gate to bring in the ponies to unpack trekking paraphernalia), the campsite is equipped with facilities such as tenting sheds, toilets, kitchens (in some), dining area and water supply. A signage describing the location, altitude, forest type, fauna, additional hiking trails in the locality, distance and time to next camp welcomes a visitor to each campsite.

5th May in Bhutan is celebrated as Zhabdrung Kuchoe.
*******************************************************
The day passing of the Zhabdrung is modernly celebrated as a Bhutanese national holiday, falling on the 3rd month, 10th day of the Bhutanese calendar.
Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal (later granted the honorific Zhabdrung Rinpoche, approximately at whose feet one submits)was a Tibetan Buddhist lama and the unifier of Bhutan as a nation-state. In addition to unifying the various warring fiefdoms for the first time in the 1630s, he also sought to create a distinct Bhutanese cultural identity separate from the Tibetan culture from which it was derived.

Bhutan has lots more exciting tales rapped around its belt, come experience some of such history during you next holiday in Bhutan.
