On this day in 1907, Bhutan crowned its first King, His Majesty Ugyen Wangchuck. Since then, this day is celebrated every year as the National Day of Bhutan.

On the 17th of December, the 2 western districts of Paro and Haa celebrate Lomba, the local new year. The tradition is to cook the local version of dumplings known as Hoentey. The cover is made of buckwheat while the filling is made of turnip, spinach, garlic, ginger, onion, schezwan pepper and butter.

At an altitude of 3800m, the Laya village is least a three day trek from the nearest road. The incredibly beautiful trek will take you through some of the most natural environments in the country.

The people of Laya have unique traditions as do most villages not accessible by road. The legendary 30 day Snowman Trek passes through Laya.

The Buddha Dordenma Statue in Thimphu, Bhutan stands at 51.5 meters, making it one of the largest statues of Buddha in the world. The statue is made of bronze and covered in gold. 125,000 smaller Buddha statues are placed within the Buddha Statue.

This Buddha statue overlooks Thimphu Valley and is said to spread peace and happiness to the entire world.

Taktsang Lhakhang(monastery) or "Tiger’s Nest”, is one of the most holy sites in Bhutan and one of the most visited places by both locals and tourists.
It was built in 1692 when the founder of Buddhism in Bhutan, Guru Rimpoche, flew to a cave on the back of a tigress and meditated in it for 3 years, 3 months, 3 days and 3 hours in order to subdue evil demons residing within it. A monastery was then built at this cave and came to be known as Taktsang Lhakhang. This monastery is located at an altitude of 3,120 meters and the trek takes roughly 2-3 hours to hike upto.
