Tangtong Gyalpo and His Divine Inventions

The earliest biography of Tangtong Gyalpo was authored by his nephew Kongchog Dewa Jungna, who managed the Phari Temple on the Tibet-Bhutan border. Tangtong Gyalpo, the revered Mahasiddhi, is believed to have been born in 1361 and to have passed away in 1485, giving him a lifespan of 124 years, a detail frequently noted in Bhutanese literature.

Facts about the Great Thangtong Gyalpo:
1. He lived for more than 124 years.
2. It is believed he learned from over 500 teachers.
3. He is said to have entered the world as a manifestation of both Cherizig (Avalokitesvara) and Yidam Tandrim, similar to Padmasambhava.
4. He is thought to be a reincarnation of Mahasiddha Kukuripa, one of the 84 Mahasiddhas of India.
5. It is said that he spent 60 years in his mother’s womb before being born, completing the sexagenary cycle in the womb.
6. He was born at the age of 60.
7. At birth, he reportedly uttered the mantra 'Om Mani Padme Hung.'
8. He is also known as Tsundup Zangpo, a name reflecting his exceptional craftsmanship.
9. In addition to Bhutan, he traveled to India, Kashmir, Nepal, Ladakh, Mongolia, and China.

Notable Contemporaries of Thangtong Gyalpo:
1. Tshongkhapa (1357) - Founder and reformer of the Gelukpa school.
2. Khedrup Je Geleg Pelzang (1385) - Principal disciple of Tshongkhapa.
3. Gedun Drubpa (1391) - The first Dalai Lama.
4. Kuenga Lekpai Zangpo (1455) - Commonly known as Lam Drukpa Kuenley.

In 1434, he imported 7,500 horse-loads of raw iron from Bhutan to Tibet.
The pictures below feature the historic temple of Tangtong Gyalpo and the ancient iron bridge he constructed.

The Stupa of Spiritual Serenity
Welcome to a journey of enlightenment and tranquility with Chorten, the Stupa—a revered monument that embodies centuries of spiritual tradition and cultural heritage.

What is a Chorten?
A Chorten, often referred to as a stupa, is a sacred structure symbolizing the Buddha's enlightened mind. Originating from ancient Buddhist and Tibetan traditions, this architectural marvel represents the path to spiritual awakening. The Chorten's design is meticulously crafted to embody the universe's elements, making it a powerful symbol of harmony and balance.

The Spiritual Significance
Visiting a Chorten is more than just sightseeing—it's a journey into the heart of spiritual practice. Traditionally, Chortens are places of meditation, offering visitors a serene space to reflect and connect with their inner selves. As you walk around the Chorten, you'll engage in the practice of "kora," a ritual circumambulation that enhances spiritual merit and deepens your connection to the teachings of Buddhism.

Architectural Beauty
The Chorten's design is both symbolic and breathtaking. Its classic structure features a dome-shaped base, a cylindrical tower, and a spire adorned with a golden pinnacle. Each element represents different aspects of the universe and the path to enlightenment. There are also, a lot of sacred mani buddhist scriptures on the wall - a written Om Mani Padme Hung! with many valuable antiques.

• The Base: Symbolizes the earth and stability.
• The Dome: Represents the heavens and the universe.
• The Tower: Stands for the spiritual path and the ascent to enlightenment.

Adorned by lush green mountains, this scenic valley captivates visitors with its natural charm. Approximately 2400 nomads reside here, deriving their livelihood primarily from yaks and other domestic animals such as Jatsa and Bamen. Another source of income comes from harvesting Yartsa Goenbup, known as cordyceps worms, a valuable mountain resource.

Sakten is gaining popularity among nature enthusiasts and eco-tourists, boasting several community farmhouses that offer food and lodging to both domestic and international tourists.

An intriguing highlight of Sakten is its sacred Naked Dance Festival, held biennially in late June. Unlike other festivals in Bhutan, this event is revered and eagerly awaited by locals (held every after 3 years only) Visitors can witness this unique cultural spectacle, characterized by ceremonial dances including Dorji Phamo and the renowned Naked Dance. Eastern Bhutan is one of the least visited regions in the country, offering serene natural landscapes that appeal to nature lovers. It provides an intimate glimpse into the proud nomadic communities whose lifestyles and cultures have remained virtually unchanged to this day, forming a rich part of Bhutan’s ethnic and cultural diversity. Therefore, it is considered a must-visit destination in Bhutan and is already on many travelers' bucket lists. Consequently, we must implement our collective ideas to attract tourists to such places with the theme of ‘Responsible Travel’ — traveling that respects the natural environment and makes a direct contribution to local communities.

As an Eco-Tour Guide, we help tourists connect with nature, explore lesser-known areas, learn new things, and experience eco-friendly adventures. This not only benefits the villagers but also contributes significantly to our country’s economic development without harming Bhutan’s rich biodiversity, thereby preserving age-old traditions forever.

Dagala Trek - The Thousand Lake Trek

Did you know?

Bhutanese strongly believe that all the lakes are inhabited by spirits, akin to the mermaids of folklore. In their quest for peace, these spirits dwell within the lakes. Therefore, it is believed that wishes made with full devotion at these lakes may be fulfilled. It is customary to pray and chant mantras at these sites, and visitors should refrain from screaming and littering the surroundings.

In Bhutan, there are more than 2674 glacial lakes and over 59 natural non-glacial lakes. Among these, the major non-glacial lakes are found in the Dagala Trek region, with some of them being quite large in size.

Dagala Trek, often referred to as Dagala - The Thousand Lake Trek, offers trekkers the opportunity to explore many of these majestic lakes nestled near Labathamba, a beautiful pasture land for yaks. Trekkers should plan for at least two nights for lake excursions in Labathamba, which sits at an altitude of 4100m above sea level.

Another highlight of this trek is the stunning view of the eastern Himalayas. Offering a breathtaking panoramic view, including the majestic Kanchenjunga at 8586 meters, the world's third-highest mountain located in Sikkim, as well as other ranges from Bhutan.

The serene nature and majestic landscapes are the main highlights of this trek. The Thousand Lake Trek is of medium grade, suitable for average hikers, though some may find it challenging. Trekking in Bhutan is always luxurious, with all necessities, including tents, sleeping bags, and provisions, carried by mountain ponies. Expert trekking chiefs and horsemen, along with experienced trekking guides, accompany every expedition.

The Royal Highland Festival in Bhutan!
Gasa Dzongkhag

Did you know that one of the most unique festivals in Bhutan is the Laya Highland Festival? During this event, numerous visitors from different districts gather to witness the unique culture of our Nomads. Held annually on the 23rd and 24th of October, in Laya, situated at an elevation of 4200m asl under Gasa District, hundreds of people gather to witness this breathtaking festival. The nomads, adorned in their traditional costumes, are a highlight of the event.

Various cultural programs are performed by Layaps, and competitions featuring highland animals such as Yaks, horses, and Mastiffs, as well as traditional songs and dances, take place. The festival venue is a 45-minute to 1-hour uphill hike from the Laya community, surrounded by majestic snow-capped mountains, providing a stunning backdrop.

A highlight for many attendees is the opportunity to have an audience with His Majesty The King of Bhutan, creating a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Additionally, the cozy cultural nights with bonfires, local drinks, and performances by celebrities offer unforgettable memories.

Visiting this Highland festival requires a trek of approximately 7-8 hours minimum. Advance arrangements are necessary for pony rides, as they are in high demand. Nights in Laya are quite cold, with the possibility of snowfall, so it's essential to plan accordingly with warm trekking gear, waterproof boots, thick socks, and gloves. Farm stays with the nomad's family are possible to book during these events.

Wangdue Phodrang Dzong
Did you know?

Legend has it that when Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel was at Chimi Lhakhang in Punakha, an old cripple approached him and prophesied that if he erected a dzong on a ridge resembling a sleeping elephant in Wangdue Phodrang, he would unite the country. Zhabdrung, believing the old man to be Yeshey Goenpo (Mahakala), sent a noble to scout the location. The noble witnessed four ravens circling the ridge, which dispersed in different directions upon his approach, interpreting this as a favorable sign. In 1638, Zhabdrung commenced the construction of the dzong.

Unfortunately, on June 24, 2012, a fire broke out in the dzong, allegedly due to a faulty water cooker, engulfing the entire structure. Fortunately, most of the historical relics and main idols were salvaged in time. It took nearly 12 years to reopen the fortress to visitors.

The renovation was carried out meticulously to replicate the original structure, especially the exterior of the Wangdue Phodrang Dzong. Upon entering the dzong, visitors are captivated by the beautifully restored interior, adorned with intricate wooden carvings. The dedication and craftsmanship displayed here are truly remarkable. Inside the inner sanctum, visitors are awestruck by the installation of the special statue of Zhabdrung, adorned with a crown, making it a unique shrine. This holds a special place in my heart as one of my favorite shrines!

The financial support for the renovation was provided by the Government of India. We are immensely grateful for their steadfast support to our country

Please Visit this when you are in Wangdue Phodrang! it is magnificent as you see - Dzongkhag Administration of Wangduephodrang

Dodedra - Hiking to the Sacred Buddhist Monastery

The hike would take around 2 hours for the average hiker. The trail gradually climbs up the hill above Pamtsho, offering a breathtaking view of the whole of Thimphu city. Peaceful trails into the pristine nature would make for an amazing day hike for most visitors.

Dodedra Monastery is one of the sacred Buddhist monastic universities, situated at an elevation of 3050 meters above sea level. The monastery is home to highly ranked Buddhist monks, and it would be a great opportunity to visit the evening prayers of the monks in their ceremonial costumes, accompanied by their Dharma instruments such as the Drum, Bell, Thunderbolt, Conch, Flutes, Trumpets, Beats, and incense.

If interested, you can listen to their chanting for hours; it's amazing and worth experiencing inside their monastery hall. We can devote ourselves for at least some time with the monks and make a wish - for a peaceful journey ahead, as we believe that every wish made here will come true.

The history of the sacred Dodedra Monastery is rooted in the "Cave of the Holy Scriptures," where a set of Dodey Kesang, sacred Buddhist sutras, is believed to have been revealed from the rock. The main temple was established by the 13th Jekhenpo, Je Yonten Thaye, in 1779.

There are many other sacred and unbelievable histories related to the art and sculptures around these premises. One of the most important, in my opinion, is:

The Weeping Avalokitesvara (Chenrizi Painting), believed to have shed tears when Kyabje Jamyang Gyaltshen passed away.

The Buddha with the crown - It is believed that the King of Ladakh offered a part of Kailash Mountain to Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel, one of the world's most sacred mountains. Zhabdrung sent Gangri Lam from Bhutan for spiritual reasons. However, the journey became difficult due to thieves along the way. Therefore, the Lama promised that if he reached Bhutan safely, he would offer something valuable. Upon reaching safely, he offered the Crown.

If you are lucky, we can stay overnight in the monastery's guest room.

Tingtibi, Panbang & Royal Manas National Park - Zhemgang Dzongkhag: A Paradise for Wilderness and Wildlife Enthusiasts
Zhemgang Dzongkhag

Escape the hustle and bustle of city life to a place completely off the beaten path. Tingtibi, Panbang, and the Royal Manas National Park are blanketed by tropical dense forests where lush green scenery takes your breath away. Here, the chirping of birds and the calls of rare langur species create a symphony of nature. But that's not all! Enjoy the beautiful river gorge, serene suspension bridges, hot spring baths, and much more. My personal favorite is swimming in the crystal-clear river, watching the fish glide by. This is what I call a perfect holiday immersed in nature.

There must be a reason why many Japanese people, like the famous Dasho Keiji Nishioka San, have settled here and served Bhutan for over 20 years. If you want to leave home and lose yourself in beautiful nature, this is the place!

Tingtibi: A Natural Haven for Birds

Prepare to be amazed by the rare bird species in Tingtibi, such as the Rufous-necked Hornbill, Great Hornbill, endangered White-billed Heron, and Bengal Florican. It is a sanctuary for many winter migratory birds and animals.

A drive along the old Tingtibi-Zhemgang Highway will often be greeted by gangs of photogenic langurs. These beautiful creatures will surely make your day, but please avoid feeding them.

Tingtibi-Panbang Highway: A Scenic Drive

The drive itself along the Tingtibi-Panbang Highway is a highlight, featuring beautiful streams and waterfalls. This route is ideal for roadside birding. On my recent trip, I was amazed by the sight of a beautiful Emerald Dove and various hornbill species. A flock of birds led by the Greater Racket-tailed Drongo was a harmonious spectacle of different bird species feeding together.
The Times of Panbang

Panbang & Royal Manas National Park

The main reason to drive here is to explore the Royal Manas National Park. Hiking around the park is a delight for hiking enthusiasts, but be cautious of the wild animals. Special park permits are required to visit these protected areas, and a forester must accompany visitors.

Wild Water Buffaloes are a highlight of the park, especially in the evening when they come to fetch water. Observing these magnificent creatures with their large horns is always a thrilling experience, but keep a safe distance as they can be dangerous.

Did you know the blockbuster film "The Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore" from the Wizarding World, created by J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter's Series, features a spectacular battle scene set in Bhutan? Zhemgang Dzongkhag

Yes! The amazing scenes were filmed in Trong Heritage Village in Zhemgang. Imagine if Spider-Man 4 were filmed here! We've had Spider-Man: No Way Home, Spider-Man: Homecoming, and Spider-Man: Far from Home.

Imagine a film titled Spider-Man: "Finally Home Sweet Home" set in Bhutan, around Trong Heritage Village in Zhemgang! That would surely be another blockbuster hit for Spider-man. Spider-Man

Trong Heritage Village is an old and beautiful rustic village. The houses here are built out of stones and date back hundreds of years. The village stands as a unique and antique site in the remote part of Bhutan known as Zhemgang.

Zhemgang Dzongkhag District is one of the richest biodiversity hotspots in the world, perfect for experiencing wilderness. It is a birding center! Nature lovers, this place would be a paradise for you.

Significance of Buddha Purnima - Saga Dawa

Saga Dawa Düchen occurs on the full moon (the 15th day) of the fourth Tibetan lunar month. This auspicious day of the full moon marks three important occasions in the life of Śākyamuni Buddha. It is considered a 'triple-blessed day' as Tathagata Gautam Buddha's birth, enlightenment, and Maha Parnirvana—signifying birth, awakening, and death.

It is a Day Dedicated to Spreading Love, Compassion, and Peace.

Buddha Purnima falls on a full moon night, usually between April and May. It is also known as Vesak in Hinduism. Thousands of Hindu & Buddhist devotees are praying and prostrating, chanting mantras, and circumambulating around the holy monuments.

On Buddha Purnima, most Buddhist devotees and monks chant mantras, where the spiritual root masters preach the teachings and most Hindu individuals dress white garments and do yoga and meditation, distributing kheer (a rice pudding). According to legend, a lady named Sujata once offered Gautam Buddha kheer on his birthday, which has since become a tradition.

The largest Sitting Buddha Statue in the world - Buddha Doderma or Sakyamuni Buddha (169ft/52m tall) and his heart mantra -

OM MUNI MUNI MAHA MUNIYE SVAHA

OM – The All-Knowledge of the three bodies of a buddha and of the infinite Buddha’s Holy Body, Speech and Mind. The knowledge of the two paths to enlightenment (Method and Wisdom), and of the two truths (Absolute and relative) that contain all existence within them.

MUNI – Control over the suffering of the three lower realms and over the wrong conception of the self-existent I.

MUNI – Control over the suffering of all samsara and over self-cherishing thoughts.

MAHA MUNIYE – Great control over the suffering of subtle illusions and over the dualistic mind.

SVAHA – May my mind receive, absorb, and keep the blessings of the mantra, and may they take root.

Hanuman Langur - Gray Langur in Bhutan

The Hanuman langur (Semnopithecus entellus) is found in western Bhutan, inhabiting 10 of its 20 dzongkhags. We will encounter Hanuman langurs in the dzongkhags of Chukha, Punakha, Thimphu, and Wangdue Phodrang, and they have been reported from Samchi, Ha, Paro, Gasa, Daga, and the western part of Sarpang. Although I have never observed them in any protected areas, in Sarpang and Daga dzongkhags, these langurs are typically found west of the River Sankosh, while in Wangdue Phodrang, they extend east of the river up to Pele-la. The observed sizes of Hanuman langur groups range from 8 to 11 individuals. Their habitat predominantly comprises tropical wet evergreen and semi-evergreen forests in the foothills, transitioning to subtropical and temperate broadleaf forests in higher elevations. Additionally, they frequent subtropical and temperate coniferous forests and may occasionally venture into the subalpine zone during the summer.

Surprisingly, we will also see this Languar along with the monks in Tango Monastery, which is believed to be the deity of Tango.

21/05/2024

The Brokpa of Merak leads a semi-nomadic lifestyle, relying heavily on their yak herds for sustenance. Situated at elevations ranging from 11,000 to 14,000 feet, the region's harsh conditions limit agricultural possibilities, with only few vegetables thriving within carefully tended greenhouses during the brief growing season.

During the winter months, the herders bring their yaks closer to the village pens, seeking refuge from the relentless cold and biting winds. As summer arrives, they embark on a journey lasting 4 to 6 months to graze their herds in the mountain pastures surrounding the village. This period is spent in temporary shepherd camps, where some women accompany the men while others remain behind, skillfully weaving yak hair into garments and textiles.
