Parks staff have reported many recent incidents of people encountering bears and screaming at them. Making noise is intended to prevent encounters by alerting bears of your presence. Shouting at a bear when you are already in a close encounter may make it feel startled or threatened and could result in a charge or attack. During a bear encounter, the best practice is to be non-threatening, speak calmly to the bear, back away slowly and have your bear spray ready in case you need to use it. Area Closure Alert 🚫

Tunnel Mountain and surrounding areas are important winter habitat for carnivores including cougars, wolves, and coyotes. This closure is intended to increase public safety while providing secure habitat for carnivores using the area during the winter months.

This closure extends just east of the Town of Banff, and includes the area around Tunnel Mountain and east of Tunnel Mountain to the Hoodoo Trailhead. However, certain trails remain open for use. Please see the map within the link.
