ITINERARY

Day 11

Today you will enjoy your final breakfast before being transferred to the Reykjavik Airport to begin your journey home.

Note there is a post-tour option to spend 3 days and 2 nights in Reykjavik on your own. It includes two nights in a centrally located hotel, your breakfasts and airport transfer. More on this in a later post.

Day 10

After breakfast you will head out with the group on a tour around Reykjavik.

The remainder of the day is at your leisure, check out the museums and some of the beautiful galleries.

For those that would like to go to the Blue Lagoon an optional tour is available.

This evening will be the farewell dinner.

ITINERARY

Day 9

On the way back to Reykjavik you will stop at Thingvellir National Park known to be the place where the fissure between the geological plates of North America and Europe is most evident. You can walk between two continents!

Then it is off to Gullfoss, a favourite waterfall and the Great Geysir, Icelands most famous geyser.

Once in Reykjavik the group will meet with a local expert who will talk about the 2008 bank crisis and the effect it had throughout Iceland.

The remainder of the day is at leisure where you can enjoy dinner on your own.

Day 8

On the Snafellsnes Peninsula visit the abandoned fishing village of Budir and walk the shell/sand beach and lava fields

Then it is off to Arnarstapi where you can wander the caves and unusual rock formations unlike anything you’ve likely ever seen

End you morning at a quaint oceanfront restaurant before heading out to continue exploring the area

- heading south west you will enjoy incredible natural scenery.

- enjoy the charming Glambaer folk museum featuring authentic turf houses, a fantastic little museum

- Gauksmyri farm is where you can enjoy learning about the famed Icelandic horses, this stop is a real treat.

- to end your day you can enjoy some leisure time to perhaps visit the thermal areas of Deildartunguhver

- travel to Siglufjordur to visit Herring Era Museum - a fascinating maritime museum that has won European Museum Award

Day 5:

- you will either tour around Puffin Island to see a puffin colony if they have not already migrated or do some whale watching
- in the afternoon visit Vatnajokull National Park and see Dettifoss - an impressive waterfall
- trek to the Hljodaklettar Echo Cliffs where you can yell and hear what seems like an endless echo, this really is a wonderful stop on this tour.

- return to Reykjavik for a brief flight to Akureyri (1 hour)
- visit stunning Lake Myvatyn
- view Hverfjall crater
- check out the boiling mud pots at Namaskard
- explore bizarre lava formations at Dimmuborgir

Day 3:

Today will be dazzling that will end with a second night at the Selafoss Hotel

- visit the Lava Centre to learn about the power beneath the country
- tour the waterfalls - Seljalandfoss and Skogafoss

- the black-sand beach at Reynisfjara is breath taking
- see the Solheimajokull glacier

Day 2

This is an easy day while you recover from jetlag.

- Depart Reykjavik for Selfoss after enjoying breakfast
- Hellisheidi Power Plant will be a stop along the way to learn about how Iceland uses this naturally produced geothermal energy
- arrive at your hotel in the afternoon and enjoy some leisure time before a tour briefing and a welcome dinner.

You will be transferred to your hotel. If you plan your own flights and do not arrive in the transfer time window you will have to make your own way to Reykjavik.

Heading to Iceland in the Fall, as is this trip, often results in seeing the Northern Lights. Of course nature presents herself in her own time and these lights are dependent on clarity of the sky. They are not guaranteed but if you see them you will be impressed by natures display.

Some Trip Highlights

Iceland is rich with unique waterfalls. During this tour you will visit Gullfoss, Skogafoss, and even walk behind Seljalandsfoss in the south. When in the north you will see Godafoss, the “waterfall of the gods,” and the incredible force of Dettifoss, which is one of Europes most powerful of all waterfalls. It is a beauty.

Iceland is in itself a highlight and if you have to start pointing out some of the particularly wonderful elements of this country these below are definitely 'unmissable'.

Geologic Wonders: Gaze upon bizarre rock formations that will leave you feeling like you are on a distant planet. See the vast lava field on the Snaefellsnes Peninsula. Lake Myvatn in the north is a beautiful shallow and volcanic lake. The phenomenal national park with its bubbling mud flats, lava fields, and lunar-like volcanic craters. And near southern Vik, walk along the black-sand beach at Reynisfjara, lined with columnar basalt-filled caves. This beach is incredibly unique and starkly picturesque.

Cultural Treasures: Learn about the Icelandic saga writers, stroll through small fishing villages and explore Skogar's folk museum and coastal Vik. At Thingvellir National Park witness the spot where the world's oldest Parliament met. Later, enjoy sophisticated Reykjavik. The folk museum was a particularly fascinating view into Iceland.

Northern Lights: This tour departure in September falls over the new moon creating a higher chance of viewing the Northern Lights. Of course this cannot be guaranteed as mother nature works on her own terms.

Iceland is a land of massive glaciers, rumbling volcanoes, spouting hot springs, lava fields, and powerful waterfalls. With gracious hospitality and a relaxed pace you can sit back and relax on this small group tour. You will experience the astonishing natural history and cultural heritage of the land of fire and ice.

Having personally taken this tour I highly recommend it. You will stay in wonderful hotels, eat wonderful food, learn about the folk lore and culture of Iceland. But more importantly you will learn about how earth processes and humans interact sometimes peacefully and sometimes in chaos.

For those with a particular interest in landscapes there will be an expert guide who will explain what you are seeing, how it came to be and how Iceland landscapes will continue to change.
