And the question that keeps coming up is, "Why do I do this to myself?"

"Last weekend, I was attempting to summit Jebel Um Shomer; the 2nd highest peak in Egypt and the 3rd hardest ascent.

In order to reach Um Shomer’s peak, we had to hike another mountain, by the name of Abo Shajara, and that meant that on the way back, we had to hike that mountain again to reach our camp in pitch black darkness, in a no-moon night and freezing-cold weather.

Hike details:
16 hours of walking
35 KM
60,000 steps
And an elevation of 2,600m
All in a freezing temperature below 0°C

The toll this hike had on my mind, body and soul was unreal. It was super challenging and it left me thinking through every step of the way ‘why do I do this?’

And through a conversation with a friend on the ride back home, we took a moment to reflect on why do we hike.
Below are some of the reasons why I do, I’d love to know from other hikers as well; why do you hike? How does it make you feel?

1. It immerses you in the world around you, the sound of your feet as it hits each rock, the rhythm of your breath and heartbeats, the feeling of the ground beneath your feet. It lets you experience life in more ways than you knew existed.

2. When I’m in the mountains, I’m reminded that life needs to slow down. It feels like a breath of fresh air, a moment to pause and take things at your own pace.

3. You lose all sense of time. You really appreciate the here and now.

4. It teaches you resilience. You know how to communicate better with your mind. You work so hard on maintaining a healthy mind-body relationship. You learn to maneuver through all the pain and thoughts of quitting and you just keep going.

5. Reaching the top isn’t just about enjoying the view, it’s more about the sigh you take when you see that you’ve made it despite all the struggles."
