👉The Queen was not the first British noble to enjoy the Sevillian bitter oranges in the form of jam. It is said that Anne Boleyn and her court ladies loved this luxury dish
👉The bitter orange has also had an impact on wars and trade. In the 19th century, the English navy discovered that the crew of the ships carrying citrus fruits fermented with sugar avoided scurvy, which gave an advantage over war opponents

👉The oranges decorating Spanish cities are harvested every year and used for compost, cosmetics, for feeding goats on industrial farms and as a fuel for producing electricity. Very little of the harvest goes to the food industry due to strict quality control

👉 The orange originated in India, Pakistan, Vietnam & southeastern China & came to Spain with the Arabs in the 12th century.
👉 The bitter fruit was used for all kinds of natural medicine.
👉 The juice was used as a disinfectant that could clean everything from copper to brass as well as to clean meat during the slaughter of animals, at a time when hygiene was otherwise a problem.
👉 Orange juice was also used to make liqueurs & used in baked goods & desserts 🥮
👉 The orange tree is actually a hybrid between the lemongrass tree (Citrus maxima) & the mandarin (Citrus reticulata) 🌳
👉 Orange trees can only bear fruit when they are a few years old
👉 The leaves of an orange tree can be dried & used to make tea 🍵
