“Lalibela is history and mystery frozen in stone!”

No matter what you’ve heard about Lalibela, no matter how many pictures you’ve seen of its breathtaking rock-hewn churches, nothing can prepare you for the reality of seeing it for yourself. It’s not only a World Heritage site, but truly a world wonder.

, a world Heritage site, undoubtedly ranks among the greatest religious – historical sites in the Christian world. Lalibela is located at 642 KM from Addis Ababa. These monolithic churches were originally thought to have been built in the 12th century during the reign of King Lalibela, but some have been dated back to the 10th century
The churches of were not constructed — they were . Each church was created by first carving out a wide trench on all four sides of the rock of monolithic blocks. These blocks were further chiseled out, forming doors, windows, columns, various floors, roofs etc. This gigantic work was further completed with an extensive system of drainage ditches, trenches and ceremonial passages, some with openings to hermit caves and catacombs.

is often referred to as the “New Jerusalem” of Africa. One of the legends is that an angel took the Emperor of Lalibela to Jerusalem to see the churches. Struck with wonder, upon returning to Lalibela, the Emperor built his own “New Jerusalem” so that pilgrims wouldn’t have to make the dangerous and long journey to the true Jerusalem. No matter if the legend is true, pilgrims continue to journey to Lalibela each year where they receive the same blessings as those pilgrims who travel to Jerusalem.

Every year on Ethiopian Christmas day on January 7 most of local pilgrims reach Lalibela from far off hamlets and inaccessible valleys, walking on their bare feet for days, weeks, and even months to share its blessings. Although Ethiopian Christmas is on January 7, there will be diverse ceremonies held around the rock-hewn churches starting the night of January 4th.

This is an ancient Christian tradition that has remained unchanged over the years. Witnessing this event, you feel like you are transported centuries back in time.

“God provided a large snake to aid him in climbing the steep-sided mountain, so he could build one of ’s most important .” The monastery is situated on an isolated mountain in northern part of Ethiopia in Tigray.

says, "when Abba Aragawi, the founder of the monastery, came to the foot of the cliff a great serpent appeared. As St Michael stood by to give directions, the folded Abba Arawi in his coils and him to the top of the mountain.

Debre Damo is one of Ethiopia’s most important monasteries and is thought to date back to Aksumite times and the 6thcentury reign of King Gebre Meskel. Debre Damo was built, in the sixth century AD, with curved wood panels, painted ceilings and walls dedicated to the legend of Saint (Abune) Aregawi. Many books have been written there and distributed to churches throughout Ethiopia. There are a collection of some of the best manuscripts presently existing in Ethiopia.

The history of Debre Damo is centered on the “ Saints” who came to Ethiopia from to spread Christianity in the Tigray region. One of them was Saint Aregawi who settled on the mountain of Debre Damo. The other eight saints settled around Tigray countryside and all have their own church named after them. Situated atop a 3,000m-high amba (tableland), and accessible only with the aid of a leather rope operated by the monks, the founder Abune Aregawi – one of the nine holy men who immigrated from Syria – was carried up the 15 m-high cliff by a flying serpent, so the legend goes.

Perhaps the world's most famous , the #3.2-million-year-old " " was the first Australopithecus afarensis skeleton ever found,

Officially named -1, and classified at the species Australopithecus afarensis, it was soon dubbed “Lucy”, after the “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” which was frequently played at the archaeologists' camp. In , the skeleton is called " ," meaning “the wondrous one”.

In , refers to a female hominid skeleton found at Hadar - about 300 km north of Addis Ababa - in the Awash valley of Ethiopia's Danakil Depression in the Afar Triangle, that was discovered in 1974 by Donald Johanson.

Australopithecus afarensis fossil was about 1.1m tall and must have weighed some 29kg, looking somewhat like a chimpanzee. The pelvis and leg bones were very similar to those of humans, by which it was determined that these primates walked erect, the primary characteristic of homonid primates. The skeleton was dated by applying the argon-argon radiometric dating method to the volcanic ash surrounding it.

In the of northern Ethiopia, lies a vast, tortured, desert plain called the . Danakil lies about 410 ft (125 m) below sea level, and is one of the hottest and most inhospitable places on Earth— temperatures average 94 degrees Fahrenheit (34.5 Celsius) but have been recorded above 122 Fahrenheit (50 Celsius).

Numerous sulfur springs, volcanoes, geysers, acidic pools, vast salt pans, and colorful mineral-laden lakes dot the area, which formed above the divergence of three tectonic plates. Volcanic activity heats spring water, bringing sulfur and iron to the surface, leaving behind yellow, green, and orange deposits. For centuries, locals have been trekking in with camel caravans to mine the salt by hand, and in recent years, a few have been guiding tourists into the landscape.
