Recently, Madeira experienced devastating wildfires that burned through over 5,700 hectares of forest and vegetation, causing significant damage across several municipalities, including Ribeira Brava, Câmara de Lobos, Ponta do Sol, and Santana. The fires started on August 14, 2024, in the Serra de Água mountains and spread quickly due to high winds and dry conditions. Thankfully, after 11 days of intense firefighting efforts, the fires were brought under control, but the landscape remains scarred, with some hotspots still under active surveillance to prevent rekindling. Nearly 200 people had to evacuate their homes as a precaution, although no homes or essential public infrastructure were destroyed.
