May Day is Muguet Day (Lilly of the Valley) Day here in France. People traditionally give bouquets to loved ones to wish them luck for the year to come… but why? The tradition goes back to medieval times when the King of France received a sprig of muguet as a token of good luck on May 1st and decided to offer the flowers to every lady in his court. This lovely gesture became an official French tradition, ushering in the spring season.
If you are in Paris today you will see lots of vendors selling them in the streets but also lots of protests as this day later became Labour Day to campaign workers rights and social issues… but that’s another story!

Saturday, flea market day!
Situated south of Paris, Vanves opens only Saturday and Sunday mornings and is more hit or miss. Much smaller than Saint-Ouen there are temporary vendors selling from tables set up along the street. It’s fun!
