We stumbled on this Channel 4 series about the North Coast 500. Episode 2 shows Loch Maree and Dry Island - our go-to for fresh seafood!

The programme format is a bit annoying in that it jumps around a lot from one place, to another place then back to the first place which drove us a bit potty but it was nice to see Wester Ross featured!

Exhilarating road trip around Scotland's world-famous touring route - the North Coast 500

Exciting news, we are pleased at last to announce that this lovely 'local lass' will be performing here on the 24th August.
Evening meals will be served from 5pm as usual.
Miranda started singing at just age five. Rapidly developing her singing and performance skills and confidence, while still at school in Gairloch, Miranda sang both on the QE2 and at the Royal Albert Hall.
Miranda has spent the years since performing up and down the country at all kinds of events.

I have to admit, I had to Google "Ecclefechan Tart". The internet told me its a traditional pastry tart from the village of Ecclefechan in Dumfries and Galloway involving nuts. It looks super yummy! Do try and visit the cafe if you can during your stay 😋😋

Sticking with a Scottish theme in the café today with our Cullen Skink Soup and tasty sweet Ecclefechan Tarts

A sad story in the recent edition of the Gairloch and District Times - reporting by Matt Larsen-Daw of the North West Scotland Mammal Network about the stranding and subsequent loss of a long-finned pilot whale in Loch Ewe. After efforts by the British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) to get the whale back out to sea, it sadly didn't make it and took its last breaths on Firemore Beach.

An autopsy showed it was an old male which did have some health issues and fortunately there were no signs or human activity having caused it become stranded or died.

The article contains some useful tips which I thought would be helpful to share here:

🐬If you see a stranded cetacean (the name for whales, dolphins and porpoises) report it to BDMLR 01825 765546

🐬You could even train as a medic with them! Find out more on their website

A trip to the restaurant at the end of the road is a lovely day out! The Gille Brighde is right down by the water at Lower Diabaig - literally at the end of the road! The drive is quite spectacular with plenty of places to stop off and explore through Torridon. I shared their 2024 opening hours and menu on an earlier post.
Give them a follow for updates on hours etc
Its a very friendly place with good home cooked food - we love it!

Not only has the weather been amazing, we finally got to visit the Bridge Cottage Art Cafe now under new ownership in Poolewe Village.

We're so pleased to see the local cafe flourishing again. The family running it - Ailsa, Jennifer and Ian - are also artists with lots of their work on display.

Great coffee and cake etc too!

Give them a follow to keep up with their opening hours and extra events that they have planned.

The folk at Badachro Distillery will be offering experiences in 2024 which sound great, its a lovely place to visit.
They say: "Enjoy a fascinating 1½ hours of chat, distillery tour and spirits tasting in our gorgeous ‘inner sanctum’ (with views you can barely imagine) when one of the founders, Gordon or Vanessa, will lead the session.
These fun, interesting and sensory experiences are a wonderful way to delve into the spirit of the Highlands and enjoy a very special aspect of this stunningly beautiful area."
Had a bit of a bother trying to share their post with the info (so cut and pasted it above), but this should take you to their website and more details - cheers!

A rather large and special ship is currently anchored in Loch Gairloch at the moment… RRS Sir David Attenborough (affectionately known as Boaty McBoatface) Built to replace polar vessels RRS James Clark Ross and RRS Ernest Shackleton, RSS Sir David Attenborough is a Polar Class 4 Research Vessel capable of breaking through sea ice over 1 metre thick! It is 125 metres long and 24 metres wide and capable of carrying 2 helicopters!!!

What a treat! Travelling back to Inverness from Aodann we had some spare time so decided to look in at Rogie Falls near Contin- we never have! We always seem to be in such a rush once we hit the road. But wow are we glad we did because we saw salmon leaping! It was really special and made you think what a wonder nature is and how smart these fish are (even if I had the chance I don't think I could eat wild salmon now!).
You may be lucky to see this between July and September so if you have time to stop by - do. Its just really pretty anyway even if the fish have all made it upstream or chilling under a rock!

The Gille Brighde is a smashing place for lunch but its a bit of twisty-steep-hair-bendy drive over from Aodann - so arriving by sea plane is the answer! There is something so glamourous and very 1930s about a sea plane, I'd love to arrive at Aodann in one!

Did you watch the BBC family tree programme Who Do You Think You Are this week? The one about the dancer Kevin Clifton?
If you did and you had as many questions as we did after watching it you might find this an interesting read - it tells the story of his many times great grandmother Matooskie's ancestors even further back and to Scotland - and it centres around Ullapool and Loch Broom just up the road! So interesting - we think there is enough here for a whole series!
Grateful to someone who shared this link on the WDYTYR Facebook group. What an amazing history and what a woman!! https://freepages.rootsweb.com/~coigach/genealogy/matooskie.htm?fbclid=IwAR3W_rUJcTNA-eHdqSq3B41unUE55CqG3mjSSEJPO11K4JnvFYSgRLkeWk0

n the late 18th, early 19th century four Mackenzie brothers left the Highlands of Scotland to enter the furtrade in North America, their cousin Alexander having come ahead to "blaze a trail". The brothers were from Coigach, in Lochbroom Parish, at the far north and west of Ross and Cromarty. The sub...

We're blessed with lots of great tea/coffee and cake options locally. While we love a traybake, we don't think you can better a bit of Victoria sponge.
And in a rather super-nerdy moment I suddenly wondered why its called Victoria Sponge. A quick Google tells me its 'sponge' because the texture of sponge cake is like a sea-swelling sponge and 'Victoria' in honour of Queen Victoria but more specifically because it was during her reign that some clever clogs invented baking powder and made it possible! That's all according to Google anyway..... there is a really good article in Country Life - I'll pop a link in the comments for the cake fans!
(I think I really need to get out more - and eat cake of course!)

We’re not saying that our Victoria Sponge cake is the key to happiness, but have you ever seen anyone sad while eating cake? Come and try it out for yourself at The GALE Centre!
