In May 2016 John and Pippa sold Heatherbank Guesthouse in Strontian and in October that year semi-retired to the North Pennines to be nearer to grandchildren and to run a self-catering holiday cottage. We have finally completed our own house to include a garage, laundry room and conservatory and are now starting to plan a small garden area around the house. Having decided many years ago to have no more livestock (apart from ducks, hens and bees while we had the guesthouse!) John is now keeping a few sheep again and the new puppy that we acquired this week seems to imply that this is not a short-term project as he wants to train one with sheep once more!
Sunrise Cottage is on the edge of Cumbria, just over the border from Northumberland and Co. Durham. It is 1500β up in the north Pennines - a less busy area than the Lake District with numerous walking options on footpaths through access land. It is close to Hadrians Wall and many other Roman sites including Vindolanda, Chesters, Housesteads and Epiacum and is ideally placed for outings to Hexham Abbey and Old Gaol, Lanercost Priory, Durham Cathedral and many other historical and interesting places. The nearby village of Nenthead has a rich mining heritage and contains the Nenthead Mines Visitor Centre and the new Nenthead Arts & Visitor Centre at the old chapel. Just up the road is Killhope Lead Mining Museum. The small market town of Alston, just four miles away, has a cobbled main street, many individual and unusual shops and several dog-friendly pubs and restaurants. It also hosts the South Tynedale Railway. Sunrise Cottage dates back over 200 years (some parts of it considerably more) and was possibly originally an old bastle house (a defensive dwelling during the time of the border reivers). It retains many original features including the old stone stairs and has a spectacular panoramic view over the Nent Valley. There is a large enclosed garden and up to 2 well-behaved dogs are welcome. The house acts as a βhideβ with mod cons! Watch deer, buzzards, kestrels from the kitchen table and red squirrels from the bedroom! Listen to the owls hunting as you go to sleep - and see the short-eared owls sitting on the wall or quartering the valley even in the daytime. The wild flowers in the summer are prolific and itβs exciting to watch them appear after the cold and snows of winter. The area also has amazing dark skies and the number of stars on a clear night will take your breath away. If you are looking for a beautiful unspoilt place away from the crowds to spend a few days why not give us a try - you won't be disappointed! Sunrise Cottage sleeps 4 in 2 bedrooms and welcomes up to 2 well behaved dogs (usually for a small fee of up to Β£15 per week).
