Wonderful news for this week’s guests!!! The funicular has reopened- we’ve all been waiting a long time for this!
It’s the announcement all our snowsports enthusiasts have been waiting for… the reinstatement works for Cairngorm Mountain’s funicular railway are now complete. After a complex engineering project to strengthen the viaduct and install a new control system, journeys on the funicular railway can now recommence.
The funicular will run regularly subject to weather conditions from tomorrow. We’re looking forward to welcoming back our first passengers as they travel to the top slopes for snowsports this season.

Winter in the Cairngorms is magical. I was driving home from The Green Lodge last night and had to keep stopping the car to take photos, trying to capture the dusk. The crisp clean night air, the promise of brisk walks and toasty fires, the mountain hares taking on their white winter colouring - and that's even before the Aurora Borealis appeared (gutted I missed it!).

Amazing location just along from Rothiemurchus farm shop, four luxurious bedrooms, sleeps 8, pet friendly, wood burning stove, amazing coffee machine, traditional pizza oven and masses of red squirrels scampering about the woods at the back of the house.

A gentle stroll around Loch an Eilein with Soda the spaniel (the boys were golfing Spey Valley).
It’s wonderful just setting out on foot (or paw), and not having to use the car.

Hello dear people of Comrie,
Please read this if you want to support local. I'm broadening that concept beyond buying local...as I'll explain.
2021 is the year of shortages, and I'm not talking Nando chicken, McDonald's milkshakes or IKEA furniture. Every hospitality business owner I talk to is struggling for staff, and you'll notice that some of our local food businesses have announced closures for a day a week because of that. Brexit and Covid have created the perfect storm.
At Wild Hearth we haven't yet had to cut back production, except for a week or so where Covid hit us, but there are bakes where we all have to dig deep and put in heroic days to get everything done, and that's not sustainable.
When I opened the bakery in May 2017 there were always several rental properties and several houses for sale. I never had a problem finding accommodation for new employees. These days, accommodation is the biggest barrier I have to recruitment -- people contact me with enthusiasm and experience, wanting to work in a bakery that is respected internationally for the quality of what we produce and the quality of life we provide for staff. But after searching and failing to find accommodation they choose not to come.
The dog you see here is a working spaniel owned by a woman who will be working with us for two months from 22 September. If you know of any dog friendly accommodation in Comrie over that period, I'd be super grateful if you could drop me a line. She doesn't have a car so it would need to be within cycling distance of the bakery and town. It seems we'll be able to find dog minding while she is working at the bakery -- four 10-hour weekday daytime shifts -- but accommodation is the sticking point.
Comrie is a fabulous place to live, raise a family, and to run a business like Wild Hearth, which now employs 22 local people. I regularly reflect on how lucky I am to live in such a strong community, surrounded by such natural beauty. If you think you can support local by helping me find accommodation for Savannah and her lovely pooch, and other new recruits longer term, I'd be very very grateful.
Oo roo, and thanks in advance,
Sourdough John

It is wonderful to be welcoming guests again, and it seems the feeling is mutual! Lovely guests have just left this review for us on Google:
"We loved our trip to The Green Lodge. The lodge and setting are beautiful. We experienced exceptionally high standards of comfort and cleanliness which are very important to us. Much care is taken by Helen the owner to ensure all visitors have a truly wonderful experience. It is easy to see that she really cares and is passionate about this. As a family We have rented many properties over the years and The Green Lodge filled all our expectations and more! It’s so lovely that we are revisiting in June and we highly recommend a visit to anyone considering a short break or holiday."

How about a last minute break watching squirrels play in Rothiemurchus? They are at their most active right now and impossibly adorable.
I have a cancellation* six nights 4 May to 10 May, £1875. One household or bubble only, as per Scot Gov regs.
*the cancellation was us, I’m gutted, May in the Cairngorms is enchanting 😭😭😭
Ps video taken when I was up painting the new kitchen window but before I laid the new turf - garden is currently looking immaculate!

It turns out that putting in the new larger kitchen window during lockdown was absolutely the right thing to do - the kitchen is flooded with light and our guests can now watch the antics of the red squirrels while sitting at the kitchen table! (The guests, that is, not the squirrels). Now a for a lick of paint and a new blind, and everything will be perfect to welcome our first guests on 26th ❤️❤️❤️
It is SO great to be up and hosting again, I can’t wait for our guests to arrive- these holidays have been a long time coming!

Luxury self catering lodge next to Hilton Coylumbridge
* Luxury lodge right on the Old Logging Way * Sleeps 8 * Pet-friendly * Enclosed woodland garden with pizza oven * Wood-burning stove * Rothiemurchus location
I’m Helen Gray and I’ve been coming on holiday to the Cairngorms National Park with my family for the past ten years. My son learned to ride his balance bike, age 3, wobbling around Loch an Eilein and is now far outstripping me (and his father), bombing down the stunt mountain bike trails at Laggan Wolftraxx.
Over the years we’ve stayed in many lovely B&Bs and self-catering cottages in different parts of the Park, and this area – Inverdruie/ Coylumbridge/ Rothiemurchus – quickly emerged as our clear favourite.
When we saw this small development of five contemporary houses being built in our ideal location, we leapt at the chance to own one. Built in Inverdruie (for those with local knowledge, next to the former Hilton staff cottages) by the highly respected local builder Allan Munro Ltd, we bought the brand new Green Lodge in Spring 2018 to run as a luxury self-catering cottage. Since then I have been full steam ahead furnishing it inside and out to the highest standard for our guests and for us to enjoy as the perfect house in the perfect location.
The Old Logging Way is the start of so many epic bike rides and hikes, and it is literally on the doorstep. We love the carefree feeling of packing a picnic lunch and setting off on foot or by bike, without having to load everyone into a car, drive and then find somewhere to park before you can start the adventure, let alone having to manhandle the bikes on and off the bike rack.
At the same time, it is an easy walk through the woods to the pool, climbing wall, playground, trampolines, bars and spa at the Coylumbridge Hotel, as well as the Rothiemurchus Farm Shop and Cafe, Treezone zip wires, tennis courts, bike hire and fishing lochans, along with great dog walks on the doorstep. The Old Bridge Inn and La Taverna restaurants are a 15 minute stroll towards Aviemore, with the centre of the village itself another five minutes walk beyond that.
Please do get in touch if you have any questions - I would be delighted to hear from you. It’s my aim that you will love staying here as much as we do.
