Class 40 Longbow and Dragon 2016 SORC Miami to Havana Race
Two Owen Clarke Class 40s during the inaugural SORC Miami-Havana Race, a few hours after the start filmed by designer Merfyn Owen. #143, Unable to halt their advance, we sat and watched Longbow, OCD's latest 4th generation design 'steam' up behind and overtook #54 Dragon (2008 generation #2) as though we were standing still when the pressure increased into the 10 - 12 kt range. As night fell Longbow held the lead, but by morning Dragon had regained it with the Akilaria RC3, #124 Amhas in second place. Dragon went on to finish first Class 40, first PHRF overall on corrected time and winner of the races' best overall performance prize.
Volvo Ocean Race - The Legends event on Green Dragon
The last stop on an exceptional tour driven by events and project requirements that have seen me cross the Atlantic four times and the English channel more than a dozen times since the begining of September. In this case a lot of fun as well as business, visiting the Volvo Ocean Race start in Alicante.
On Thursday there was some great racing at The Legends event where I crewed on the Irish Volvo 70 Green Dragon. Volvo veterans Bouwe Beking and Jerry Kirby were onboard for the day to share their experience and stories with the young Irish crew. Thrashing around on an offshore course in twenty five knots of wind in a pursuit/bucket race (fastest boats start last) it was an amazing site to see the old Whitbread maxis Rothmans and Charles Jourdan bearing down on us under spinnaker having rounded the top mark. After a fast run back to Alicante we just pipped Fisher and Paykel as well as one of boats from the first race, Kings Legend to the finish.
Everyone agreed that RORC did a great job of organising the start times for the boats as the fleet finished as tightly bunched as you could dream of. The evening finished with dinner and dancing for over seven hundred people, the legends and their guests.
The race itself starts Saturday afternoon and finishes in Galway in July next year.
As the guys on Green Dragon are saying however......."the race starts in Alicante and the party starts in Galway."

Aerial view of the fleet waiting for the start of the 2011 TJV
The 2011 TJV start has been delayed by the presence of that potentially boat busting storm moving across the Atlantic. There is a question whether the depressions that are following this one will even allow the fleet to leave any time next week. For the moment the sailors will just have to sit and wait in anticipation watching the weather situation develop and enjoy the hospitality of Le Havre. Delay may eventually have an effect on the start of the return date of the BtoB, the single-handed return race that is a qualifier for the Vendee Globe.
For those not old enough to remember, thanks to The Clash for the appropriate backing track.
Eighth Owen Clarke designed IMOCA Open 60 is announced
So it was Barcelona on Wednesday night for the announcement of our eighth and latest innovative IMOCA Open 60, Acciona 100% Eco-Powered, skippered by Javier 'Bubi' Sanso. The yacht has been in Europe for eight weeks already and passed all her IMOCA stability and motoring tests in Brest last month. Early reports are extremely positive with the yacht hitting 32 kts boat speed during her delivery and sailing in 40kts of headwind without problems on the way too and through the Straits of Gibraltar.
Enjoy this video of the World's first keel stepped rig, electric motor drive, completely eco, non fossil fuel powered Open 60 .....see you in Le Havre, Friday or Saturday in the TJV race village? Merf
