BLACK MOUNTAINS TRAIL RUNNING CHALLENGE - June 17, 2023

Set at the wonderful Perth-y-Pia Outdoor Activity Centre, Llanbedr, Wales, we are in the perfect place for trail running and our challenge will not let you down. Offering distances from 12K to the 53k Ultra Marathon there is a distance for everyone.

This is going to be one of our hardest and most scenic trail running challenge in Wales, depending on your distance you will be running high in the Black Mountains with breathtaking views all around.

If you are going to run a trail race this year then the Black Mountains Trail Running Challenge has to be the event to choose. This is the first year of this event, so enter now and join us from the beginning of our adventures here in the Black Mountains.

Created by Welsh architect Sir Clough Williams-Ellis, Portmeirion Village was designed to show how a naturally beautiful site could be developed without spoiling it. Williams-Ellis acquired the site in 1925 and worked to complete his grand vision over the next 50 years, completing the Village as we know it today in 1976.

Looking for a new Challange

Ras y Gader, the Cader Idris mountain race, one of the toughest fell races in Wales, and viewed by many as a classic "must do" race in the calendar.

The event starts and finishes in the market town of Dolgellau, at sea level, and climbs almost 3000ft to the summit of Pen y Gader itself. One of the real challenges of the race is the constantly changing terrain, switching from steep metalled roads to flat tracks behind Gwernan lake, pitched steps up the Pony Path, and picking your way among the boulder fields on the final ascent........and then you've got to do it all in reverse!
The key to success is avoiding cramp with the changing surfaces and gradients on the way back to town.

This is a small car park under Norway spruce trees and the gateway to the Forest Garden Discovery Trail, where you can experience trees from all over the world, some with fascinating facts on secret signs.

Listen to the story of a local witch and a demon's tree on our wind-up 'sound stores'. There is a separate car park for disabled users before you get to the main car park with direct access to the all ability trail Forest Garden Discovery Trail.
It starts from the disabled car park and is built to all-ability standards with an easy gradient that is suitable for wheelchair users.

PLACES TO VISIT - Castell Y Bere

It may be remote. But it’s a magnet for all castle lovers. Strung along a jagged rocky outcrop in the Dysynni Valley at the foot of Cader Idris, Castell y Bere is especially good at evoking the spirit and atmosphere of Wales’s native castles. Built by Welsh ruler Llywelyn ap Iorwerth (Llywelyn the Great) to protect Gwynedd’s southern frontier, construction began in 1221 with the castle remaining in use until 1294.

Though much of the Castell y Bere’s strength can be attributed to its commanding location, its design is a testament to the ingenuity of its Welsh architects. The sophisticated entrance featuring two gatehouses with drawbridges and possibly portcullises was extremely advanced for its time, even by the standards of English fortifications.
