Broughton High School Parent Council

Broughton High School Parent Council For parents, carers, staff and users of Broughton High School In May 2006, the Scottish Parliament passed the Scottish Schools (Parental Involvement) Act.

The Act was introduced to help parents, carers and schools work together as partners in children's learning. In August 2006 parents at BHS successfully established a Parent Council (the representative part of the Parent Forum, the wider body in which all parents and guardians at the school are automatically enrolled). Our school values and welcomes the help of parents and other family members. Man

y can attend meetings to discuss and debate school matters, however, many also engage from afar. Engagement through other methods such as email is equally greatly valued so please get in touch even if you cannot attend meetings. We need support with school activities and events, and in supporting the management of the school. There are many formal and informal ways of helping out. Email the PC at: [email protected]

Alongside the Parent Council, the Broughton High School Association raises funds to pay for projects, trips and other activities and equipment which are not usually covered by the school’s budget. Fundraising activities include running cafes at the school on Saturday mornings during community classes and on Sundays for regular chess tournaments. We also organise social events for parents, staff and pupils. Email the BHSA at: [email protected]

The Broughton High School Association is a registered charity, number SCO17010.

Cricket Australia are coming to Stockbridge! 🏏🇦🇺

The Grange Cricket Club are hosting three T20 international series on 4, 6 & 7 September, ahead of Australia’s fixtures against England later in the month.

The matches will be the first to be played by Australia’s men in Scotland since 2013!

Preparations are currently underway installing the seating restricting access down Portgower Place - this affects the route to/from school at the start/end of the day, and at lunchtime. Make sure your young person is aware of this - they may want to take an alternative route. There are parking restrictions in place for the road until 9 September.

Information regarding tickets & match starting times can be found here ⬇️

Even the most confident P7 may be a wee bit worried about starting S1. There are plenty of things you can do to help smooth the transition and ease any nerves they may have. Parent Club’s website has lots of tips to help prepare them. https://www.parentclub.scot/articles/starting-secondary-school Parent Club Scotland

13/08/2024

Parents! Back to school can be a stressful time for you as well as for your young folk. Particularly when starting S1, as it’s very different from high school and you might not have the same adults / school gate experience as in primary school.

There is always someone you or your child can speak to. If you have any parent questions or concerns, you can get in touch with Parent Council and we can try to help, even if just a friendly ear. We‘ve been through a lot of the things that might arise, so remember you’re not alone.

13/08/2024

We wish all students a happy day tomorrow, whether starting S1 or returning to S2-6.

The school has asked new S1 students to report to the Assembly Hall at 8.30am tomorrow, and bring a packed lunch or cash to buy lunch at the canteen. ParentPay should be set up in the next couple of days. Those on Free School Meals will receive their lunch.

This weekend Broughton High School is hosting the Delancey UK Schools' Chess Challenge Scottish Gigafinals 2024 run by Lothian Junior Chess ♟️😁

Best of luck to all the 245 players competing! 🤞🏻

BHSA will be running a community cafe providing food and drinks for the young people taking part in the competition, and their accompanying families.

Thank you to all of our parents, pupils & staff volunteers who are helping with our café over the weekend, and for the savoury/sweet homebakes and homemade soup expected to come in 🙌🏻🧁🥐🍩🍵

Our Chess Cafés have contributed c.£1,770 towards our BHSA funds over the year which is amazing 💰😊Our funding enables staff to purchase items that can't otherwise be funded by the school or City of Edinburgh Council, like subsidised travel for trips, specialist equipment or pupil support (S1 school ties) etc.

Thank you chess families for your support over the year! 🥰

Our P6s have been busy putting together a recipe book which they are selling to fundraise for P7 Camp next year. Today is the official book launch in school & at our lovely neighbourhood bookshop Ginger & Pickles on St Stephens St 🥰

Truly a pupil-led enterprise - they've all been involved with it from coming up with the idea to getting it printed - promoting it, collecting the recipes from our school families, typing out the content, designing the layout and reaching out to local businesses for sponsorship to cover production costs.

Thank you to our all of our local independent sponsors...
