We’re hoping for a sunny late summer so our guests can make the most of our beautiful outdoor spaces for as long as possible; we don’t want to have to pack the garden furniture away just yet! Just add a BBQ, a group of family and friends (up to 24 can stay if you book The Cider Mill with Monnington House and Garden Cottage), some food and drink (readily available from Oakchurch Farm Shop just up the road), and you’ve got the perfect recipe for a joyful escape to the country.

It's been a fun and busy summer here in Monnington On Wye so far, but it's the time of year when our thoughts start to turn to Christmas and the new year, so book now and take advantage of our limited-time earlybird offer for stays taken in January and February 2025.

We are the perfect choice for a winter break for up to 24 people and 4 dogs. Celebrate a milestone birthday or anniversary, bring a walking group, or some golf buddies. With underfloor heating, an Aga, wood-burning stoves and snuggly blankets, you can get active during the day and come home and cosy up in the evenings. When you book the property with Monnington House and Garden Cottage, you’ll find 12 bedrooms all with ensuite or matched bathrooms, plenty of areas to relax and chat, play games or watch TV, and games and table tennis rooms in which to have some friendly competition! We have a dining area that seats 24, a huge kitchen with all the equipment you could wish for, or you can book our caterers to make your stay extra special. With walks from the door and plenty of restaurants, activities for all ages and interesting places to visit within easy reach, your new year will be off to a relaxed and energised start. It’s a peaceful corner of rural Herefordshire, and The Cider Mill is situated on the edge of a family farm down a tranquil lane, surrounded by acres of cider orchards. The River Wye is close by, and we have beautiful walks from the door for you and your four-legged friends to enjoy, not to mention plenty of other activities nearby. All of this is within easy reach of Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham, Milton Keynes, Reading and the South West, so we’re perfectly located for a get-together of family or friends from all over.

It’s just about the hottest day of the year, so here we are talking about Christmas! 🎄

There are only 18 weeks left until the start of December, when you might be thinking about getting a group of family or friends together for a festive gathering. Why not hold it at The Cider Mill and book Monnington House and Garden Cottage as well, to sleep up to 24. Each room has an ensuite or matched bathroom, there’s plenty of room to spread out across the properties, decorations will be up, and our caterers could cook you a Christmas dinner to remember. The old cider press in our garden is shrouded in clematis and looking lovely at the moment! While the sun’s out it’s the perfect time to sit on the terrace and admire the rest of the enclosed garden; ideal for dogs and little ones to run around in, and at the end of the day you can light the BBQ and enjoy a sundowner. ☀🍹

If you love local produce as much as we do, it’s the perfect time to be here in Herefordshire! Soft fruit is available in abundance, and Oakchurch Farm Shop just up the lane from The Cider Mill is the place to go for strawberries, raspberries, cherries and more from their own farm. 🍓🍒 If you miss the shops and are on your way to us, you’ll love Haygrove Fruit Stand’s vending machine in Ledbury!

Local drink producers like Bentleys Castle Fruit Farm have been busy bottling their cider, spirits and juices, so now is a great time to do some tasting. 🍾🍺 Alternatively, pick up some supplies, pack a bag and find a picnic spot along the river. If that sounds too much like hard work, lay your picnic blanket down somewhere in our pretty enclosed garden and set out your lunch. Not far to go for a snooze afterwards!

A summer walk from Monnington on Wye to Garden Café at Brobury House & Gardens for a cup of tea and an ice cream yesterday! Just one of the pretty, peaceful and picturesque walks we have right from our front door. This one takes about an hour, but there are plenty of shorter and longer options for routes all round us. Take a four-legged friend or two and enjoy Herefordshire’s big sky and beautiful landscape.

Dogs are as welcome at The Cider Mill as their owners, so bring your four-legged friends and take advantage of our enclosed garden and numerous walks from the door. We welcome up to two well-behaved dogs (who must be booked in advance) but do occasionally accept more, so please ask when you book. We provide …

It took its time, but hopefully the sun is finally here to stay! Our beautiful corner of rural Herefordshire is looking vibrant, and our gardens are full of colour and life. We're so lucky to be in such a peaceful location, but one which is so well connected to local activities, things to do and places to visit. Here are some of our favourite activities and places to visit within 12 miles of our property ...

🚲 Book Drover Cycles to lead an escorted bike tour around the local villages. Bikes will be provided and the tour starts from our door, so no need to get the car out!
🥾 Walk all or part of our stretch of the Wye Valley Walk (Bredwardine to Byford section). Pick up the route at the end of our drive. Stop at Garden Café at Brobury House & Gardens for brunch, lunch or tea. (2.5 miles on foot, or 3.8 miles by car)
🌹 Explore NT The Weir Garden and its wildlife, birdlife and historic features. Dogs are welcome to join you. (5 miles)
🛶 Hire a canoe for a full or half day from Hereford Kayak & Canoe at Byecross Campsite, and paddle down the Wye taking in the views. (7 miles away)
🎣 Apply via the Fishing Passport and fish for barbel and chub at Sugwas Court. (7 miles)
🏎 Visit Herefordshire Raceway Kart Circuit and test your driving skills on their 600 metre race circuit. (8.2 miles)
🗺 View the Mappa Mundi in Hereford Cathedral for a history fix. Great if the weather is a bit wet. (10 miles)
🍄 Spend half a day foraging with Wild Food UK at Drovers Rest organic farm. Your visit includes homemade refreshments such as elderflower champagne or hogweed and wild garlic soup! (10 miles)
🛍 Browse around the bookshops and galleries in Hay-on-Wye, or maybe watch a film at Richard Booth's Bookshop Cinema. (12 miles)
🌷 Or just relax at home by reading, enjoying the garden or challenging your family and friends to a board game.

"The Cider Mill is a beautiful cottage, amazingly fitted out with all you could possibly need. Three extremely comfortable beds with en-suites. The garden is very pretty, plus the addition of a small field for the dogs to use. Property fully enclosed too, which is a bonus.

Monnington on Wye is a quaint hamlet, lots of walks from the door, plus many further afield. So many apple orchards, which looked lovely with the blossom out.
Oakchurch Farm Shop is a short drive away, cakes are amazing and lots of vegetables/meat if eating in.

We visited Hay-on-Wye, which was lovely, albeit drizzly! We also did lots of longer walks further afield, also visited Woebley with its pretty black and white houses.
We had a fabulous break, played lots of board games in the evening, which were supplied.

Did you know that Herefordshire is the perfect place to do some stargazing? Our location in Monnington on Wye, surrounded by cider orchards, means light pollution is extremely low and skies are big, so take a seat in our garden, look up, and enjoy an evening with the stars or even a meteor shower if you time your visit right. 💫

Some meteor showers that might be visible later this year from Monnington are the Perseids (July/August), Orionids (October/November) and Geminids (December). There are also planets at opposition (at their brightest) in September, November and December, and supermoons in September and October. 🌕🌌🪐

Make sure you don’t miss out by booking your stay now, then gather a group of 6 family and friends and settle down. Telescopes optional! 🔭🌟

If you enjoy walking, a break at The Cider Mill is one you will enjoy. Whether you’re looking to do a stretch of the Wye Valley Walk (we are located directly on the Bredwardine to Byford section), a gentle stroll along Monnington Walk, which is a mile-long avenue of Scots pine and yew trees planted in 1626, or prefer to stretch your legs with a hike up Hay Bluff (part of the Offa’s D**e Path), the Cat’s Back (in the Black Mountains on the border between England and Wales), or to Arthur's Stone (a Neolithic burial chamber), there’s a route for all levels of fitness within very easy reach. Bring walking friends and family (we can sleep 6) and two dogs for an active few days in this beautiful part of Herefordshire.

The Royal Welsh Show takes place from Monday 22nd – Thursday 25th July this year at the Royal Welsh Showground in Builth Wells. Stay at The Cider Mill and be at the showground in less than 50 minutes, making our luxury self-catering property the ideal base for a week of livestock and equine competitions, activities including forestry, horticulture, crafts, countryside sports, shopping, food and drink, exciting entertainment, attractions and displays.

With 3 ground floor ensuite bedrooms, plenty of space to relax, and a well-equipped kitchen with indoor and outdoor seating areas, you’ll look forward to coming home after a busy day at the show. Book Monnington House just across the paddock for an additional nine bedrooms, and sleep up to 24.

🏎 Test your go-karting skills at Herefordshire Raceway Kart Circuit.
🏹 Try archery, axe-throwing, Nordic field games and paintballing at The Viking Games.
🚲 Hire a bike/an ebike from Drover Cycles in Hay-on-Wye and cycle the local Cider Routes, pedal along the river, or go mountain biking.
🦉 Visit the Small Breeds Farm Park at Kington for some animal encounters. Loved by young and old!
⚱ Book a few hours on a potter’s wheel at Eastnor Pottery and create something to remember your holiday by!

Make some unforgettable memories when you bring up to 24 members of your family (and up to 4 dogs) when you come to The Cider Mill and Monnington House this year! We have space for young ones to run around and for older ones to play table tennis and pool in the games room and badminton in the garden, or plenty of room to just sit and relax. We have indoor and outdoor tables that seat everyone, kitchens well enough equipped to cook for them all (or caterers who can do that for you), and 12 bedrooms all with an ensuite or paired bathroom.

“We really enjoyed our Easter weekend staying at the Cider Mlll. We chose the property based on the three main factors; the open bright open living space, enclosed garden (2 dogs) and location (easy to drive around but also walks from the front door), and we were not disappointed. A really quaint, peaceful (amazing bird song each morning!), well equipped, and nicely designed place to stay. The recommendations for local walks and options for eating out were great!

We love to welcome as many people as possible to The Cider Mill, so are happy to highlight the following features that make it particularly accessible to less mobile guests …

🛏 All three of our bedrooms are on the ground floor. Each room has a zip and link king size bed which can be changed to singles on request.
🚿 Each bedroom has an ensuite bathroom.
🌳 We have wooden flooring throughout the property.
🚗 A car can park almost next to the front door step, which is 10cm high.
👩‍🦽 There is level access to all accommodation other than a small rise of 2cm from hall to reception room.
🥾 There are plenty of flat walking trails from the door, so everyone can enjoy our peaceful surroundings.

Book The Cider Mill with Monnington House and have access to one more ground floor bedroom with an ensuite bathroom, and sleep up to 24 guests.
