You’d be forgiven for thinking that the Bay of Fires in Tasmania gets its name from the orange-red boulders that line its beach.

The name actually originates from 1773, when British navigator Captain Tobias Furneaux spotted Aboriginal fires on the beaches.

Apparently, the fires were used as a means of communication, with one fire meaning people were coming from the islands, and two fires meaning they were leaving.
