Excellent webinar from the Scottish Violence Reduction Unit on Hope after Trauma with Paul Gray (former CEO NHS Scotland), Jo Berry and Gregory Boyle founder of Homeboy Industries in Los Angeles, the largest gang intervention, rehabilitation and re-entry program in the world.

Listen in as the group talk about acknowledging the trauma caused by Covid. We need to listen to people, not rush to pathologise/medicalise (diagnose someone or prescribe something), but rather seek to understand their perspective so as not to retraumatise them. Allowing people the opportunity to connect and heal, not with a view to going back to a ‘new normal’, but to readdress the imbalance and help them to arrive at solutions by expressing themselves in a meaningful way.

Crises have 3 psychological phases:
1. Emergency - clear shared goals, energised, focused, even productive.
2. Regression - we realise the future is uncertain, lose sense of purpose, get tired, irritable, withdrawn and less productive.
3. Recovery - we begin to reorientate, revise our goals, expectations, roles and begin to focus on moving forward vs. getting by.
Most of us are in the regression phase right now. This is a normal reaction to an abnormal situation.

Crisis is often a three-act story: Emergency. Regression. Recovery.

January 2020 White Paper from Royal College of Psychiatrists on “Technology use and the mental health of children and young people” shows how devices pose potential challenges to the health and well-being of children and young people.

Summary:
1. Time spent engaging with digital technology can come at the expense of time spent on other activities including face-to-face interactions with family or carers and peers, exercise and sleep.

2. Online content may be viewed which is distressing, including exposure to violent, graphic or sexual imagery and exposure to hate speech.

3. Exposure to online bullying.

4. The risk of exploitation including sexual exploitation.

5. Money can be quickly and easily spent online, for example in game purchases, online gambling and on products such as prescription and illegal drugs.

6. Whilst evidence for causal links is still developing, there is evidence to suggest that digital technology can affect weight, mood, thoughts of su***de and self-harm and body image.

7. Some children and young people may be more vulnerable to the impact of digital technology, for example those with mental health needs such as depression, anxiety and developmental conditions such as ADHD.

8. The concept of technology addiction is emerging together with developing clinical services for children and young people with addiction.
