Facinating history from the Staffordshire Moorlands

The highest village in Britain is Flash on the Staffordshire Moorlands, and at 1519 feet above sea level that makes The New Inn the highest village pub. There are a couple of other pubs that stand higher but they're isolated and not village establishments.

Flash used to have quite the reputation for being a den of outlaws, it's name thought to have derived from the term for counterfeit, or flash, coins during the 18th century. Gangs of counterfeiters did work in the area, the most infamous being the Meg Lane gang who operated out of a farm 7 miles from Flash at Macclesfield.

They were raided and their leader, "Black Hugh" (!) was hanged at Chester. It's thought they would hand over bags of fake coins at the Three Shires Head bridge halfway between Flash and Macclesfield, the point where three counties met and escape from the authorities was easy. Flash is said to have produced some bare-knuckle boxers who would fight at Three Shires Head too, as well as promoters of dog and c**k fighting. Very different times!

Today Flash is a sleepy, peaceful village and the New Inn is a great place to slake your walking-induced thirst, as some of Britain's best routes pass close by.

From the pretty village of Litton, this 8-mile circular walk takes you around four of the Derbyshire Dales! It’s mostly a low-level walk, with good paths so it’s a great route and there’s plenty of wildlife and nature to spot along the way.

Our new addition at Ford Wetley for 2024, the stunning river decking overlooking the cleared undergrowth and the relaxing, heated ‘Hive’ cabin has been crafted by talented local craftspeople. This project has been funded by the UK Government through the ‘UK Shared Prosperity Fund’.

This new addition will not only employ more local people to look after our guests needs but also make our property much more comfortable and spacious with extra space for guests to sit out at night, even allowing their teens to sleep in the cabin for a real ‘outdoor’ experience. This project has had people with hidden disabilities in mind, finding a place in nature to fully decompress for their stay.

Finally we have a new local pub opening soon, which with wellies, you can reach by foot in 20 minutes. Within 10 minutes drive, we have the most amazing pubs serving up the best food. Our guests usually visit The Black Lion Inn at Butterton plus The Jervis Arms during their stay with us. Both wonderfully local and great food. Highly recommended.

A magical day trip out

Discovering the magical world of Lud’s Church 😯🌳 This deep, moss-covered chasm is the backdrop of many local myths and legends ✨

In the 15th century it was used as a secret place for worship and other local legends say Robin Hood and Friar Tuck stayed in the cleft whilst hiding from the authorities 🧝

Close to the Roaches in Leek and Staffordshire’s Back Forest, the 18 metre deep chasm is covered from top to bottom in vibrant moss 🌿
