Smallholding life continued....

Ben and Digger had their annual dentals and all good. Low sugar diets to keep their teeth in tip top condition, just some sharp points to rasp.

Digger is being a star recently...maybe because he isn't feeling too good. For the 2nd time in 2 weeks, and the first time in 10 years, he has a hoof abscess. He has been very lame as its pretty painful. Movement is key to work the infection out, so he is still wandering aroundthe fields. He had a soak in warm salty water to help and he is having homeopathic treatment. I am not sure what has caused this, and may never know, it could be a piece of grit worked it's way in or a thorn.
The first abscess exit hole can be seen in the last photo, it's pretty big, and found it's way out through his heel bulb. Hoping this next one takes the same route and we may poultice to encourage this.
He is due a hoof trim next week so our trimmer may be able to shed some more light. Chris is incredibly patient with Digger and very knowledgeable, after training as a farrier he opted to care for barefoot horses, after all horses don't need shoes they are shod mostly due to owners preference. That's a huge topic !! Always happy to let people meet the horses and chat about them. I have learnt more about natural horse keeping over the years and Ben and Digger thrive on their lifestyle, Digger perhaps a little too much!! 😁

Dear Colin has been very poorly and having intensive care for 2 weeks now. 3 times a day of syringe feeding and extra vitamins and he has started eating for himself. He will still need extra care for a couple of weeks but he is pulling through. Touch and go at one point if we should continue as it's such an awful condition to witness.
Silkies can be prone to getting wry neck, which is what Colin had. It can appear as a chick and may be why he was rehomed, stress can bring it on too so maybe new hens arriving when he isn't feeling 100%. Anyway we now know we can deal with it and he will get ongoing extra vitamins weekly to hopefully keep it at bay.
It's been tough with the chooks this year with minor, yet expensive!, veterinary intervention. But ,for me, if I am keeping animals, they are pets and will get all the love and treatment any of my pets would. 🩡

Last offer for September 24th to 27th September , 4 nights , 2 guests Β£334.

With sunrise at 7am and sunset at 7pm still plenty of daylight to enjoy our local coast walks. The rivers are full creating beautiful waterfalls for easy walks in the Rheidol valley.

Autumn skies are beautiful and as night sets in light the firepit and enjoy some stargazing with a glass of mead.

The River Teifi, West Wales The two men are John Davies (forefront) and Will Davies of Cenarth; the last two legitimate coracle fishermen in Cenarth. They are both using the single-arm method of propulsion; a means of gliding downstream in a controlled way. They carry their coracles and their fish home on their backs. (1972)

Freaks me out catching Ben flat out, I hardly ever see him lying down, with Digger it's nearly every day! But all is well in cob world, just a bit of rough weather yesterday which sets off playtime, I could hear them squealing in the mist, so a lie in after breakfast, I get that 😁
