A List of Biblical Sites in Jordan

The following are Biblical sites found in the country of Jordan. This non exhaustive list will give you a robust foundation for understanding some of the Biblical events and personalities that were in this land.
Mt Nebo (the Mountain where Moses was shown the Holy Land and then passed away.)

Deuteronomy 34

The Jordan River (The Jordan river and Jordan valley are referenced over 180 times in the Bible. Of particular significance is that the baptism site of Jesus is precisely the place where Joshua led the Israelites across the Jordan to Jericho.)

Mark 1:5; Joshua 3; 2 Kings 2:3-14

Joshua 3 (the river parting and the sons of Jacob crossing to Jericho)

2 Kings 2:3-14 (Elijah’s crossing and being taken up)

2 Kings 5:8-14 (Elisha heals Naaman)

2 Samuel 16-19 (David and Absalom)

Matthew 19:1; Mark 10:1; John 10:40-42 (Jesus ministered across the Jordan.)

John 1; Luke 3:21-23; Matthew 3

The Dead Sea

Genesis 14:3; Ezekiel 47:7-12

Cities of the Decapolis (including Pella, Gerasa, the below Gadara, Philadelphia, and others.)

Matthew 4:25; Mark 5:20; 7:31

Um Qais (Gadara)

Matthew 8:28–32

Amman (referred to as Philadelphia by the Romans, Ammon/Rabbah was originally the capital of the ancient Ammonites.)

Genesis 19:38; Numbers 21:24; Deuteronomy 2:19; 2 Samuel 11; Ezekiel 25:5

Jabbok River (where Jacob wrestles with the angel. Now modern day Zarqa River.)

Genesis 32:22; Deuteronomy 3:16

The King’s Way (ancient trade route taken by the Israelites after crossing the Red Sea. Today this is still a highway, one of the most beautiful in Jordan.)

Numbers 20:17; 21:22

Madaba

Numbers 21:30; Joshua 13:9; Isaiah 15:2

Edom (home to the descendants of Esau, patriarch of the Edomites later referred to in the New Testament by a Greek form of their name “Idumeans” )

Aaron’s tomb (located in Petra)

Numbers 20:22-29, 33:38-39

Petra and the Nabataeans

Matthew 2:11 (It is quite possible that the Magi purchased their frankincense and myrrh in Petra on their way to Bethlehem. Petra was renowned in the frankincense and myrrh trade and these valuable gifts are found in the Arabian gulf, not Persia, where the Magi traveled from. Petra is on the route to Bethlehem from Persia.)

2 Corinthians 11:32 (The reference is to King Aretas IV of Petra.)

Galatians 1:17 (When Paul speaks of going into “Arabia” he is most likely referring to the Nabataean Kingdom.).

1 Maccabees 5:25

I know, that’s a lot!
Note that this list is not exhaustive. If you would like the exhaustive version, it can be found throughout the Bible.
Use the above references to shed light on the significance of this remarkable place. Being in these places gives you new eyes to see new meanings in the Biblical text as you discover the geography of this ancient land.

Christian Tours In Jordan 2022

Jordan is named after the Jordan river where Jesus have been baptized by John the Baptist. This fact is enough to describe the importance of Jordan as biblical country. Jordan, also has an important role for the traveler travelling to biblical sites because of its significance with the Old and the New Testament.

Jordan in the Old Testament was the Land, the home where three of the Israeli tribes were settled according to the book of Joshua: the tribes of Reuben, Gad and Mannaseh. Before this, biblical interpretations have been located the story of Adam and Eve and the Garden of Eden to an area along the North-west bank of the river Jordan known as Beysan. The land of Jordan witnessed the mission of prophets to the rise of the Christian faith.

Reminders of this past are everywhere in Jordan. In that land Jacob wrestled with the Angel of God, Lot’s wife was turned into a pillar of salt, Job suffered and rewarded for his faith, Elijah ascended to Heaven. Is the place where Moses led the Israelites from Egypt to Holy Land and delivered God’s Law to mankind. It is where Jesus were baptized by John and anointed by God, where his called his first disciples and where Holy Trinity manifested itself. It is the land of miracles, a place where the biblical figures and the events of the Bible are all around you.

Greek Orthodox Basilica of Saint George in Madaba in JORDAN

The Greek Orthodox Basilica of Saint George is also Known as the "Church of the Map". It is one of the most beautiful churches in the world and it's one of the main places of worship and pilgrimage across Jordan. Decorated with sumptuous interiors, elegant colonnades and various mosaics, the Greek Orthodox Basilica of Saint George hosts the mosaic map of the holy land.
The Map of Madaba mosaic was discovered in 1896, it's a map of the Middle East dating from the 6th century and preserved in the floor of the Greek Orthodox Basilica of Saint George Church, and it is the reason why it's called "Church of the Map". With two million pieces of coloured stone, the map depicts hills and valleys, villages and towns in Palestine and the Nile Delta. Dated back to the 6th century, part of the Madaba Mosaic Map contains the oldest catographic depiction of the Holy Land of Jerusalem.
This rather modest 19th-century Greek Orthodox church houses a treasure of early Christianity. Imagine the excitement in 1884 when Christian builders came across the remnants of a Byzantine church on their construction site. Among the rubble, having survived wilful destruction, fire and neglect, the flooring they discovered wasn’t just another mosaic but one with extraordinary significance: to this day, it represents the oldest map of Palestine in existence and provides many historical insights into the region.

Crafted in AD 560, the map has 157 captions (in Greek) depicting all the major biblical sites of the Middle East, from Egypt to Palestine. It was originally around 15m to 25m long and 6m wide, and once contained more than two million pieces. Although much of the mosaic has been lost, enough remains to sense the complexity of the whole.

On Friday and Sunday mornings the church opens at 7am for Mass (visitors are welcome); viewing the map at these times is not permitted. A small shop by the exit sells copies of the map and reproduction Orthodox icons.

The ticket office doubles as a small interpretative centre, and has excellent displays recounting the history of the mosaics and the church – it's well worth spending some time here before viewing the map, as it will make it easier to spot the details that you want to focus on in the church.

Bethany in Jordan , where Jesus was Baptised.

Baptism Site “Bethany Beyond the Jordan” (Al-Maghtas)

Situated on the eastern bank of the River Jordan, nine kilometres north of the Dead Sea, the archaeological site consists of two distinct areas: Tell Al-Kharrar, also known as Jabal Mar-Elias (Elijah’s Hill) and the area of the churches of Saint John the Baptist near the river. Situated in a pristine natural environment the site is believed to be the location where Jesus of Nazareth was baptized by John the Baptist. It features Roman and Byzantine remains including churches and chapels, a monastery, caves that have been used by hermits and pools in which baptisms were celebrated, testifying to the religious character of the place. The site is a Christian place of pilgrimage.

Mount Nebo is significant because of its role in the Old Testament. The Bible says that Mount Nebo was where Moses lived out his final days and saw the Promised Land, which he would never enter. It is said that Moses’ body may be buried here, although that has yet to be proven. There are two peaks on Mt. Nebo, Siyagha and al-Mukhayyat. By the 4th century AD, Mount Nebo had already become a pilgrimage site and a church and sanctuary were built on Siyagha to honor Moses. In the 6th century AD, monks constructed a Byzantine monastery on Siyagha, which lasted for almost six centuries. While the building is no longer there, the mosaics from this time period are still visible. The site was abandoned by the 16th century. In 1993, Mount Nebo was purchased by the Franciscans who restored the site. It is an active Franciscan monastery today that is open to visitors.
