We're delighted to share the exciting news that the ski lifts in Verbier are opening on Friday! A series of early winter storms have battered the Alps in recent days, blanketing the mountain in thick powdery snow all the way down the valley and creating perfect conditions.

With lots more snow on the way over the next week, and temperatures remaining cold, it's promising to be the best start to the ski season in 10 years.

📰 NEWS FROM THE ITALIAN ALPS 📰

Good morning, all, from a snowy Chalet Baita 1697!

The days are shortening, there is a crisp edge to the air that harbingers autumn. Up in Pattemouche, the cattle that have been grazing the mountain slopes since mid-May have been gathered in the valleys for the trip back down to lower-lying farmland, and the tinkling cowbells are silent until next spring. The cross-country trails that hosted the 2006 Winter Olympics, and which run right past Baita 1697, are being prepared, snow-blowers are being moved into place, and everyone’s thoughts are turning to the first snows of winter, which have arrived very early, and the impending ski season.

The snowfall for the eastern watershed of the Alps is looking good for this season, based on the most reliable source of prediction we have - a dear friend who is a winemaker in Alba, and a fanatical snowboarder (nobody is perfect!) and beekeeper, has been able to predict, with remarkable accuracy, the likely snowfall for the upcoming season from the way in which the bees cluster and swarm as the temperature starts to fall. The snow that Sestriere receives is from weather patterns that sweep up from the Mediterranean Sea, through Liguria and Piedmont, passing by the Alba wine region - hence the relevance of his bees’ predictive behaviour. The bees’ activity indicates a cold winter with heavy precipitation upcoming - we are keeping our fingers crossed that they are proved right again! (We’ve had 30 cm of snow already here in Pattemouche.)

At Baita 1697, we have been busy getting the chalet ready for the season. We have been touching up walls and replacing some of the carpets with new flooring; bringing in new all-natural, all-organic mattresses; re-stocking the wine cellars, with a focus on natural wines (organic or biodynamic in the vineyard, minimal intervention in the natural fermentation process in the cellar, makes for far fewer hangovers!); re-designing menus; laying in ample firewood for fireplaces and stoves; in short, making sure all is perfect to welcome our first guests of the season. Bianca and Pietro will again be looking after our guests this year, with the help of a new Mercedes people-carrier for ferrying up to 8 guests at a time to and fro.

The Via Lattea/Milky Way ski area is also being invested in, with new infrastructure being put in place to improve the skiing experience, and new marketing partnerships in the UK to raise the profile of the ski area. An entire new snow making system has been installed. The new owners of the ski domain have great ambitions for the area, so expect to see a continual stream of good news about the development, updating and upgrading of the resort. With little of the ski area at altitudes lower than 2,000m above sea level, the entire area provides relatively predictable snow, and consistently low temperatures to allow the efficient blowing of artificial snow when needed - in stark contrast to some of the lower resorts that have had a number of difficult seasons.

Around Baita 1697, our favourite ski instructors will be back again, at Scuola Sci Pragelato, Gabriele (featured in our mini video!) will be director this year and we coordinate very well together and I am sure you will too. Cristina and Nadia, who run Lallo’s ski rental shop just 100 metres from Baita 1697, have the newest high-end skis laid in for Baita clients. And our favourite local restaurants - La Greppia for the most amazing fillet steak in green pepper sauce, and the mountain staples of raclette and fondue (and the smoked goose starter with slices of pear and caramelised balsamic glaze is sublime); Al Mulino, one of the finest (and busiest) pizzerias in the whole of Italy; La Reserve, for an altogether more chic dining experience from the owners of one of the best-known beach resorts on the Costa Azzura/Côte d’Azur, ’Spiaggetta dei Balzi Rossi’ - will be ready to go from the opening of the ski season on the 7th December.

🇮🇹 Via Lattea, or the “Milky Way” as it is known internationally, is an extensive linked ski area including the Italian resorts of Sestriere, Sauze d’Oulx, San Sicario, Cesana, Claviere, Oulx, Pragelato and the French resort of Montgenèvre. This dual country ski area extends to 400km of ski slopes ranging from an altitude of 1,350m in Cesana up to 2,800m on the Motta peak.

🚡 The ski area has a huge lift capacity of over 75,000 people per hour which is serviced by 70 ski lifts. The two main gateways to the ski area are Monte Fraiteve, which connects Sestriere to Sauze d’Oulx and San Sicario, and the Monti della Luna, “Mountains of the Moon”, where the slopes of Cesana Torinese, Claviere and Montgenèvre depart.

⛷️ The Milky Way ski area offers skiers and snowboarders 247 slopes, with 9 green, 70 blue, 134 red, and 34 black pistes. It is a great destination for intermediate skiers who love to travel around the mountains without skiing the same piste twice. There are also two snowparks in Sestriere and Sauze d’Oulx designed for both freestyle and ski cross.
