White Maiden - Sports Fishing Charter, Lymington White Maiden II is a big 11m x 4m Catamaran, owned and skippered by myself, Les Jones.

I am an Offshore Yachtmaster, chartering my vessels since 2005 and full time since 2013, based at Lymington Quay. I pickup passengers at the Lymington Harbourmaster Pontoon, Bath RoadCar Park. There is early free car parking on the road outside plus toilets, an outside saltwater swimming pool and the Mayflower PH all within a 100 meters of the pickup point. We fish the Needles area of the English Channel with a useful fall back, the sheltered waters of Christchurch Bay or the Western Solent.

Wow another fantastic week, with only one trip lost to weather. Our only shark day found us playing another big 250/280lb Thresher. Lee Frampton tamed the shark within 40 mins. This fish didn’t need long to recover. These Threshers are an incredible fish. I now have loads of video of our last two out of three Threshers but they take plenty of time edit. Lee slow jigged while waiting for the shark and at one point was connected to something very big and lively that came off just below the surface. We never saw what it was but along with Bass and Macky slow jigging is a nice clean way to fish on the drift with no wind so ideal when Sharking on calm days. Yesterday we spotted a small pod of Common Dolphin at the Needles and we saw some more on Wednesday too but there have been no Tuna sightings from our deck yet. It won’t be long before we see them in our area. There were plenty of other fish caught this week too. Here are some pictures of Lee mid fight and others with the fish from the week.

Nice little video sent by Danny Masters of last weeks first Thresher. I know the harness isn’t fitted the best but it was comfy and Kieron Masters smashed it. The shark took line at the start of this video but it absolutely raced off at the take and continuously ran while I went to get the harness from the cab.

Two lovely shark days this week. It was so warm and sunny the parasol was deployed! On Wednesday we caught two super sharks along with just one Tope. Two Thresher Sharks fell to floated baits on the big shark rods and boy did we need them. The first Thresher estimated around 350lb was literally the best fish we have ever got to the boat. We have had Porbeagles a bit bigger ( heavier) but the Thresher Shark is very special.

The initial run was absolutely amazing with the spool emptying rapidly to half spool and probably a 300+ yard dash away from the boat. Kieran Masters, literally shaking from head to foot, was harnessed up and then practiced the Blue Fin Tuna retrieval tactics which he mastered quickly. He had no choice! Surprisingly the fish was under control within 40 minutes, which is very quick for such a big fish and during the measure process she managed to twist the hook out (very polite) before gently swimming away.

Within an hour Brian Welch’s red balloon did ‘a funny’. I picked up the rod and connected with a fish then ‘lost feel’ as the shark ran straight at the boat. Another balloon shot away as the shark picked up another line. George grabbed that rod and set the hook too and we both had a lot of weight on at the same time to the same point of mass. The fish stayed shallow and around the boat for a bit and we could see it almost immediately. Another Thresher! Unbelievable. This one was smaller and just as I was becoming concerned about the two rod predicament one line came free and left the initial hook-up holding firm. Now in a much better situation the standup harness was fitted to Brian who proceeded to get the hang of a big fish fight. It became an awkward and feisty fish and was tricky to get away from the engines. Despite my best efforts on the helm at one point we had to remove a loop of line from around one engine and proceeded to control the fish and even measure. After a short tow we cropped through the hook shank and watched the smaller set 150lb female Thresher swim down and kick away. We even had a another run, that came to nothing as that snatched the bait clean off the hook.

The next day we tested the same area. We found more Tope but unfortunately no big sharks. There was a near miss after two short but very hard tugs which ended with the bait chomped in half. Tope came from the bottom, on baited feathers and even off the top, on the big rods. A very different day, in fact oily calm for most of the morning. It was still a great shark day.

Pictured below is Kieron Masters and Brian Welch holding the Thresher Shark rods with Danny and Lee either side. What a team! The other guys pictured are Amy, Stuart and Mike with their Tope. Somehow I missed Andy with his big rod Tope caught off the top again with a fight similar to a small blue. Now that would have been good.
FYI 1 - when some Thresher pics become available from the lads videos, I will share.
FYI 2 - A Blue Fin Tuna was spotted local today, now that is early!!

This week I did a few maintenance jobs on the boat and spent time with the boss. We cycled the West Wight on hired E Bikes and have just recovered from a very sore backside! Anyway on Monday I join other Skippers on a Blue Fin Tuna Training course to refresh the knowledge. My BFT Permit starts on Wednesday so if we see them on a Sharking day we can now target them. I suspect our prime time locally for BFTs will be during September and October. Very Tightlines Les.

Three lovely days this week and all falling perfectly with warm flat calms for a real good fish. We missed a couple of big sharks but found enough Tope to 35lb, plus some other species on the first two shark trips of this year. The inshore trip found a few species although anywhere else but over rocks and your baits will be attacked by Tope at the moment.

Two lovely days this week but the first day found the Bass inshore hard to find with just three small ones coming to the boat. So the next day we looked for species with 30+ Black Bream, Bull Huss, Po***ck, Congers, Mackerel, Wrasse and Pout caught. After lots of prep I’m now really looking forward to the Sharking that starts on Wednesday. There are two spaces for sharks on Thursday next week. Contact Les 07585335783.

A busy week with some hard earned fish. A few Bass to live baits and some nice Bream and a few other species thrown in. Here are some pics of the better fish. The sun fish was on a flat calm Wednesday when you would expect to see them. Definitely the hottest day of the year so far and absolutely flat calm all day.

Two very different days in some lovely weather. One with too many fish and one with not enough. We found some huge Mackerel and some nice Bream feeding well that were replaced the next day by Po***ck and a few Mackerel. Here’s some pics.

A couple of good days fishing, with Black Bream, Bass and Hounds now seemingly everywhere. We had a few Mackerel too. The strong wind was still causing us some problems but we have been tucking up close to shore when we have to, staying comfortable and still finding them fish. The trick is to find the better fish among all the small stuff.

Lovely cool fresh mornings, tricky fresh breezy afternoons. Lots of Black Bream still plus a few sizeable Bass, lots of small ones. Also caught Hounds, Congers, Mackerel, Herring, Wrasse, Po***ck, Pout and Dogs. Pictures of the better fish and the last one, some new toys!! Oh and Richard with two scallops that trapped his trace, which is last thing they will ever do!!!

Next week looks great after this breezy week. We found Bream very close to shore and unbelievably a near 30lb Conger in just 14’ off Sowley for Tony Terracciano while we were fishing for Stingers. The trawler fishing near us returned two 40lb’ers. On Thursday we found loads of congers and dogs on another incorrect forecast so on Friday we went shallow again, in 35mph gusts but had a good mix of species in the bay. It was good fun as always with the two Bristol area crews in testing conditions.

Another nice week with a few Bass and lots of Black Bream. Plus we found some Congers, Pout and a few Mackerel and oh and some small Po***ck. The better fish pics are shown below with beginner Nadia literally nailing this Bass in the middle, what a scrap that was on very light tackle!!!
I have a few spaces left for next Wednesday! Call or text to 07585335783.

What a lovely week blessed with some awesome fishing. We have never caught so many different species practically ‘off the top’ on metals. Great crews, fantastic weather and good memories. You can’t beat seeing bait fish in the water, gulls going berserk and dolphins on a relaxed hunt and play.

Bottlenosed Dolphins spotted amongst the gulls today made for a really nice time along with reasonable Black Bream, some good Po***ck and small Bass.

This week, even on these small tides we are finding a few nice po***ck and some really nice Black Bream. Oddly on Wednesdays trip the Bream only seemed to like ragworm!! Lots of markings showing and we are also catching on the drift. These are still our main target species along with smoothounds, congers, bullhuss, pout and various wrasse. Next week we will find mackerel on our next set of spring tides and will start to target the Bass then too.

A chilly and sometimes choppy week that was blessed with a few really nice fish. Well done to Chris Trussler for picking out this big Black Bream from the many smaller fish. Also to Dave Hillier for a nice surprise a Blonde Ray caught from shallow water. Looking forward to next week and I’m really expecting some good weather soon. I have spaces come up last minute and will advertise here and on CBUK.co.uk. Tightlines Les

This week we tested the banks, inshore fishing and offshore wrecking. On Thursday , Blonde Rays, Tope and Hounds were the better fish along a few with dogs, lots of small whiting, a couple of conger and a Thornback. On Friday, in a lively sea, 14 Plaice, some Bream and a few small Po***ck gave the guys our target eating fish. Yesterday our offshore wrecking sortie was a full days work for all as the fish played hard to get. The guys fished well and hard for a cod and five small po***ck the best nearly 5lb. The last two pictures were a first for me, a spiny cockle. It’s a fascinating shellfish covered in, what’s best described, as teeth!

About time too, some decent forecasts in succession. Today saw some better fish come to the boat. The guys had the best of it on a better tide and after fishing well through the persistent dogs. Leigh was the man on form and the last few pics show his fish although I believe George caught the best Black Bream at 2lb 8oz. Well done guys. Other species were Bull Huss, Po***ck, Congers and Pout. There was plenty of rubbish floating around the Solent yesterday due to the storms and huge tides. One tree was very big… so beware all you boaters!!!

APMarine doing their magic today on White Maiden 2. It’s always a pleasure to have Phil and Alex plying their trade around the boat. I can recommend these guys as they have lots of experience and are now working hard for themselves. Unfortunately for me, I now have acres of gelcoat to clean, cut and polish over the next two weeks! While a couple of fiddly jobs will get done by APMarine. Before the anti-foul job prior to launch.

After the stormiest dawn we have had so far, we went fishing. The sea was lumpy but I thought that would help the trolling. Anyway after plenty of time and lack of takes the anticipating rod grabbers whittled down to just four of us before time petered out and we ended up drifting with Bream rigs. Three species, two new ones to me of which one a rare type of Bream apparently.! 😂😂

White Maiden Story

One of the best boats, in one of the best marina locations and sea areas in England. With a useful skipper too, although I am writing myself, everyone keeps telling me that! I pickup passengers at Lymington Yacht Haven and across the Solent at Yarmouth, IOW. At Lymington Yacht Haven, I am moored close to the carparks and toilets. There is a convenient shop for bait, tackle, boat bits, papers and grub, immediately at the entrance to the Yacht Haven, open from 0800 every day. There is an excellent Bistro (Restaurant and Bar) within a 150 metres of White Maiden II’s moorings that will serve Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner. Please call them direct to arrange your table and times. We fish the Needles area of the English Channel as a plan A most of the time but also have with a very useful fall-back, the sheltered waters of Christchurch Bay and the Western Solent.
