Good news story 😃

The remote island of Eigg off Scotland's west coast has become a leader in renewable energy and sustainability. In 1997, the 110 residents bought the island, and by 2008, they were off grid, meeting most of their needs from wind, solar, and water. They have been planting trees and carefully managing local woodland. They have seen wildlife returning, including sea eagles. (Info from globalpositvenews)

This is the stunning new mural in tribute to Paul O’Grady which has appeared in Manchester ❤

Street artist Manchester Murals, aka Chris Moore, created the mural of Paul's alter ego Lily Savage - after his previous artwork on the Fallowfiled Loop was defaced and then painted over

He said: "Hopefully it’ll be there for years to come. I think it’s a really fitting situé for Lily to be in"

You can find it on the side of The Church, previously Churchill's, in Manchester's Gay Village

Last night was really special. It was a joy to be nominated for an award amongst all those comedians celebrating the spirit of Glasgow in the name of Billy Connolly, but it was an extra special joy watching my pal Janey win! Hearing Billy Connolly via video announce Janey as the winner was such a thrill! In the face of what life has thrown at her in the last year she’s gotten up on stage, been courageous, ballsy, funny, defiant and showed true grit. I was so proud of her last night and the atmosphere in the King’s Theatre was electric! There was so much love in the room.
I just wanted to thank you all for sharing in the buzz! ❤️

With the Cost of Living Crisis continuing, so many of us are giving up responding to the calls that arrive to make our usual £10, £20 or £50 donation to our chosen charities. At the same time more dogs are being given up because their owners are unable to afford to feed them or cover the costs of vet bills. So please check out the Dog Trust’s new bank card that enables you to make donations by rounding up spending on your existing bank account. Of course it’s FCA accredited. Every little bit adds up and could be transformational for the charity during these tough times. Added bonus re bank fees for transactions whilst abroad. All the blurb and how to register below - thanks for doing something good this weekend… 👇❤️

One of the UK’s largest animal welfare charities, has launched a debit card enabling members to make charitable donations each time they spend at home or abroad.

The new Dogs Trust by Currensea card links to existing bank accounts and will be available to anyone wishing to support Dogs Trust, by opting to donate to the charity when spending in the UK and overseas.

Donations can be made by rounding up spending to the nearest 50p or £1 in the UK, and also when spending abroad.

Currensea allows users to save at least 85% - and up to 100% - on every transaction abroad by removing the normal fees leveraged by banks and other card providers, and Dog’s Trust supporters are able to donate some or all of these savings.

Our partnership with Currensea, a unique debit card allowing supporters to donate to us whenever they spend.

Sometimes the difference between people getting behind your idea is simply whether or not there’s a really good image. Knowing there’s someone who will be interested enough to capture that image is half of the battle. With someone like Alister Firth you were always guaranteed a good outcome! As we move towards the end of the year, we thought we'd take a moment just to reflect on what an incredibly challenging year it's been for millions of people up and down the country. We recognise the incredible unfaltering work by individuals. communities and charities across the UK to battle the Cost of Living Crisis. It is not worth imaging how much worse things would be for so many people without your great efforts.

As we all continue to work together through the energy crisis, please take a moment over the festive season to give a little back if you can to those who need our help most. Make a big pot of soup, invite a neighbour in for lunch, look out for each other. If everyone does something, the combined effort could make a great deal of difference.

We hope you are able to enjoy the festive period and look forward to working together in 2023.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

Seen this post from the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum. Got us thinking how do you like yours?? Whit no with Star Anise and Kiwi??!! Happy Porridge Day 😋 😃😝

Today is October the 10th, which means it is ‘World Porridge Day’. You will not be surprised, gentle reader, to learn that this is a Scottish concept, porridge – having been for centuries – inextricably associated with the Scots. Porridge Day began in 2009 and is driven by the charity Mary’s Meals which seeks to feed the poorest of children around the world. A worthy cause and a very Burnsian ideal, I am sure you will agree.

But why does porridge, and by association, the oat, have such an association with Scotland and the Scots? Dr. Samuel Johnson, that stout but irascible English lexicographer set forth the following definition of the oat in his 1755 Dictionary of the English Language
“𝘈 𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘪𝘯, 𝘸𝘩𝘪𝘤𝘩 𝘪𝘯 𝘌𝘯𝘨𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘪𝘴 𝘨𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘨𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘯 𝘵𝘰 𝘩𝘰𝘳𝘴𝘦𝘴, 𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘪𝘯 𝘚𝘤𝘰𝘵𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘴𝘶𝘱𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦.” No doubt this was intended as a taunt (Johnson being a man who never missed an opportunity to have a tongue-in-cheek swipe at the Scots), however our own great man of letters is unashamed in his recognition of the humble oat and its value to our land:

“𝘉𝘶𝘵 𝘯𝘰𝘸 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘶𝘱𝘱𝘦𝘳 𝘤𝘳𝘰𝘸𝘯𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘳 𝘴𝘪𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘦 𝘣𝘰𝘢𝘳𝘥,
𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙝𝙖𝙡𝙚𝙨𝙤𝙢𝙚 𝙥𝙖𝙧𝙧𝙞𝙩𝙘𝙝, 𝙘𝙝𝙞𝙚𝙛 𝙤 𝙎𝙘𝙤𝙩𝙞𝙖’𝙨 𝙛𝙤𝙤𝙙;
𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘰𝘶𝘱𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘳 𝘰𝘯𝘭𝘺 𝘩𝘢𝘸𝘬𝘪𝘦 𝘥𝘰𝘦𝘴 𝘢𝘧𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘥,
𝘛𝘩𝘢𝘵, ‘𝘺𝘰𝘯𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘩𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘢𝘯 𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘸𝘴 𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘤𝘰𝘰𝘥….”

Robert Burns -The Cotter’s Saturday Night, 1785-86.

Porridge has, undoubtedly, in the past been associated with the lower levels of society, a poor food if you will. Nowadays however, it has become a trendy superfood. Therefore, if you feel like taking a break from those other Scottish breakfast standards; the lorne sausage, tattie scone and black pudding, think on the healthy option and start your day with a bowl of ‘parritch’!
