**OFFA'S D**E DELIGHT**

You have to agree that this stunning view overlooking Tintern Abbey is something rather special. Jutting out from the cliffs along the Offa's D**e footpath is the Devil's Pulpit, a popular vantage point for those exploring the great outdoors.

Story has it that the Devil himself preached from this spot to tempt the monks at Tintern away from their religious ways. His sermons fell on deaf ears as the gorgeous Tintern Abbey which was built in 1131 turned out to be one of the most prosperous abbeys in Wales.

So if you're following the Offa's D**e path out of Herefordshire into Momouthshire be sure to stop a while at the Devil's Pulpit and take in this absolutely gorgeous vista.

**LAZY DAYS ON THE WYE**

Herefordshire is such a beautiful place to live in or to visit. The more we explore our beautiful county, the more we fall in love with it.

Whether you just like sitting by the River Wye watching the wildlife, chilling and chatting or actively getting involved canoeing or paddle boarding, there are always new things to discover.

The riverbanks are full of nature, pretty butterflies, lovely wild flowers, chattering birds and noisy ducks. It's always wonderful to see so many people enjoying our various riverside beauty spots.

We love lazy days on or by the wye, who could resist?

**FOLKLORE FRIDAY**

Our story this week takes us back to the 18th century, 1763 to be precise, at the end of the 'Seven Years War'. It tells of liberty taking, cider, riots and outrage.

The British Government was rather desperate for funds after such a long war period. The then Prime Minister John Stuart, Earl of Bute proposed a tax on cider. Four shillings was to be levied on every hogshead of cider. The 'Cider Act' had landed! Since large numbers of farmers and others produced their own cider, excise officers were empowered to gain access to farms and cottages in order to collect the tax.

As you can imagine the agricultural workers for whom cider was so important took umbrage, let's face it cider was a serious part of a man's wages. The tax lead to demonstrations, mournful processions, gatherings intent on violence and some took to harassing excise men. Mobs threatened MPs who had voted for the act, the new Bishop of Exeter faced a baying mob who hissed and insulted him and had an apple thrown at his head. Another MP while travelling through Monmouth was pulled from his carriage and endured a scary moment where the mob were deciding whether to hang him or mistreat him. Luckily for him they chose the latter.

After much discontent, disturbances and discourse, in 1766 the government backed down. The celebrations were epic! People decorated the orchards, tea parties, balls and bell ringing were the order of the day.

The Gloucester Journal reported "There is nothing heard in our streets, but 'the day of the oppressor is over, the calamity of the cyder drinker is put away; the deadly excise man shall appear no more in our quarters'"

The message seems to have been clear, leave our cider alone!

There are more great tales and stories over on our dedicated Herefordshire History and Folklore page, why not take a look.
